    Rich, today I ran a 4000 mah 6s at the factory CG, I'm running 40% elevator, 60 % ailerons, 75 % rudder, 100 % flaps, the flaps are on a dial, with this setup, this thing flies like a dream, I am running 30 % expo, today we launched at 12:30 at Ocala, I cut the power at 400 feet and immediately my vario started squawking lift, I'm running a FrSky radio with telemetry for altitude and GPS and battery condition, the FOX found lift so quick it went up, up, and away, I won't say how high we took it, but with just that short motor run we sustained a flight of 1 hr and 38 minutes and still had 60 % battery left after we landed, so this bird well thermal and can be used for show central doing aerobatics........

    I always run the numbers through a c/g calculator on a new plane. I started doing this about 20 years ago as the proliferation of ARF's came to be. I have had many new planes not balance on the factory mark!

    Hey rich, great movie. Looks like a fantastic plane. Just a tip from a guy that has learnt the hard way with electric. You mentioned at the 5:20 mark to hold the throttle down. It's safer to use the motor cut that is a standard feature on the spektrum transmitters. Even holding the throttle down there is way too much potential to bump the stick and tear yourself up. It can be assigned easily enough to a switch. A big motor and prop combo like that will do some serious damage.

      Yes, Warrick, its a plane, not a glider. Gliders are light aicraft without any engine or motor power. Just because it has long wings and fixed landing gear, it doesn't mean it's a glider. It has the fuselage of a plane too. However, if it can soar with the power off, then it's a glider.

    Rich, you decided to have the flaps operate as two-position flaps vs Flaps and Reflex (flaps go up like spoilers)? Out of the box mine came as Flaps/Reflex vs Take-off/Landing. I'd love to see the flight characteristics of the flaps as reflex as I've been too chicken to try it! LOL

    Great job Rich! Thanks for doing this...been waiting on a detailed video of the gliding. One thing...you may want to start programming a throttle cut on your DX9. Super quick to do and makes the throttle gimble non active. Very safe and a great thing to advise folks to do in your videos.

    • @RCINFORMER
      @RCINFORMER  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Having a throttle cut us a good safety setting... However, In my opinion, having a throttle cut on a powered model is like adding a self destruct switch:) I prefer to have the throttle active in case I need the power.

    • @ModelAV8RChannel
      @ModelAV8RChannel 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The throttle cut is for when you are fiddling with the plane on the ground. I turn it on before I plug the battery up, then turn it off right before I start taxiing or before I throw a hand launcher. I use a neck strap so I can flip the switch off while holding a plane for hand launch. It's not used during the flight...so when I need throttle its there. When I land I turn the throttle cut back on. Think of it as a safety on a gun...off when you're shooting...on when its loaded and you're handling it for any other reason.

    • @RCINFORMER
      @RCINFORMER  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ModelAV8RChannel That is all a good idea for safety, however more times than not I have had people flip that switch in flight by mistake and unknowingly not have the power when they need it.... The end result is a crashed airplane because of the throttle cut switch. In my opinion it is very safe to have that set up but it is also like having a self destruct switch on your airplane. if you're airborne when you hit the switch and you don't know that the switch is on, it often results in a crash:(

    • @ModelAV8RChannel
      @ModelAV8RChannel 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well Rich if that happens I would have to say they should have programmed it to a more inconspicuous switch. If it's done properly there's no way you can make a mistake... and I primarily mean that with the modern-day Spektrum transmitters . For instance on your dx9 put it on an inconspicuous switch in the back like switch H. That switch is hard to mistakenly hit, but in the event that you somehow do if you properly use your voice feature your transmitter will clearly tell you "throttle cut on" or "throttle cut off". That's the main point of the voice prompts. In the event that someone inadvertently hits a switch...if they have properly programmed the transmitter with voice they will instantly know whether or not the switch they hit is relevant to that plane... and they'll know exactly what they did. I can't speak for how easy the feature is to use with other transmitters, but Spektrum makes it easy enough with their newer stuff that in my opinion there's just no excuse not to use it.

    • @RCINFORMER
      @RCINFORMER  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Model Aviator Adventures I've seen this mistake happen too many times to make me not want to use a throttle kill.... I have repeatedly seen it cause more harm than good... That's just my experience with it.... I'm not saying it's a bad idea, I just prefer not to use it because....again I've seen it cause more harm than good too many times. Scotty used to say, "The more you overtake the plumbing, the easier it is to stop up the drain." It's one more complexity in a system, that's really not necessary. For some people a throttle kill is a really good safety device, for other people it is just simply kicking the chair out from under yourself... I kinda view it as a personal preference item.... I think it's best for the pilot flying a plane to set it up in the way that it works best for him/her... And that usually works fantastic right up until your hand the radio over to someone else to fly your plane and they mistakenly hit that switch & for some reason the voice alert doesn't work and you don't know that they hit that switch:) It usually ends Badly when you're maneuvering low to the ground and you advance the throttle and suprisingly, nothing happens:(

    Once you get it trimmed in the air then bring it back down and yhe elevator is where it should be would that be the cg and adjust if not where you want it

    • @RCINFORMER
      @RCINFORMER  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      CG should always set before flight as its relative to the “Center of gravity”, but often guys find they may have to trim a plane up to compensate if your CG is slightly fwd or aft of perfect CG-when this happens You should really adjust indicated CG so that you are not relying on aerodynamics to make up for bad CG-that said sometimes you can have an air frame that will achieve perfect CG On a stand but the minute you fly it you might find it want’s to climb or dive -in this instance you should first trim the aircraft to get it flying level, then after landing look at possible mechanical adjustment required to keep servo center in the right place whilst also having the control surface where it needs to be. Hope this helps🙂

    Great video. I still think that the Wings are to short to be a glider. FMS Fox Body 1873mm, wingspan 3000mm / Real one body 7.38m, wingspan 14.00m. My math is quite poor but wouldn't be a more reasonable wingspan length something around 3600mm for the FMS Fox to really perform as a glider?

    • @TheStickyBusiness
      @TheStickyBusiness 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Anyway is gorgeous, the CG backs seems to help a lot. It would be great if you could fly it in a slope, I think it will shine there for sure. Still if I had this one I would love to be able to get a FMS Fox 35cm pair wing enlargers for a total of 70cm more, 3700mm total. There are other epo gliders that have those, or have the same body in two wing span version like the Volantex phoenix, it come like in 3 wing versions and there is one that comes with the enlargers, just to have more options

    Factory CG settings are going to be very conservative, to account for various people's battery setups. The further aft you push the cg, the more efficient flyer it becomes... to a point. There is a cg point where if it is anymore aft a stall would be unrecoverable. That's bad.

    • @RCINFORMER
      @RCINFORMER  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The farther aft the CG, the more efficient yes, but you also have a less stable aircraft in pitch & roll the farther aft you go. The plane is also faster but much harder to fly especially when at higher speeds.

    • @knievelhotmail
      @knievelhotmail 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@RCINFORMER Pitch certainly, as the closer the cg gets to the center of lift, the less load is applied to the horizontal stabilizer. I guess I'm not sure how roll would be affected, but if you were to send me that glider on loan I'd be certain to subject it to a full battery if tests and get back to you with my conclusions. 👍

    I contacted FMS via email on their website to ask about this Fox 3000 model, wanting to know if it soars over hills and cliffs, and those pricks refused to give me an answer after my second email. Good business with these people, isn't it, not. I will look elsewhere and will not recommend this company. Obviously they're hiding something, such as whether this is a soaring glider or just an electric powered plane. A glider is only a glider if it is able to maintain lift over a thermal updraft even on flat land, not only hills and cliffs. That's all I wanted to know. And they stopped responding. Ha! Let's see if anyone who has this model will admit that it is not a glider but a plane. The prop can be used on a glider only to fly up, like the days when we used a bungee line and or pulled by a motorized model airplane. If the prop has to run all the time, then this is no glider.
