Step 1: everyone starts as a beginner Step 2: take it one step at a time Step 3: stop overthinking Step 4: prepare (look up how to use machines on TH-cam like on Naomi’s channel) Step 5: just go for it
I'm 53 years old and felt so awkward going to the gym. Your videos have given me so much confidence, thank you so much! My husband even gave me a compliment on my dead lift form.....because of you!
I was just at the gym. The First and second day I was like "idgaf if people look at me" and today I didn't even want to go near the cable machines because so many men were near it. I ended up doing only 3 sets. Thankssss for the vid. Ima go tomorrow at 5 am
I hate working out with a tonne of people in there. That's also when many people decide they need to do 2 exercises at a time taking up 2 machines at a time (alternating between the machines as they finish a set). And I often have them mad at me as I thought they finished with a machine I wanna use and approached it.
@@Bunny11344 ask them if they want to work in, if you still have a lot of sets left. If they say no then you at least know that you tried and don’t bother rushing, get in all that you need. If they say yes then it’s prefect cause you can take longer rests in between and maybe make a friend.
I just signed up for LA Fitness, before I set up a tour. I asked questions like: When is their gym the least crowded (So there's less of a crowd to make me anxious)? What machines and areas are recommended for beginners? I even asked things I already knew the answer to just so I was well prepared. There is absolutely no judgment since they know your position. On my second day at the gym, I had a lesson from a personal trainer, this came free from being a new member. BEST THING EVER! Even after the tour, I was still worried and a bit clueless. I knew where everything was, but now I got the chance to apply what the trainer was telling me. She showed me how to use each machine, and I made sure she checked my form before moving on. Knowing what I wanted to work on in my beginner's fitness journey was a huge help, so I would know what type of workouts to focus on instead of being scatted and unfocused when I am there. My first time alone I felt like everyone was watching me. I didn't know how to properly adjust some machines (Naomi has a video on this I think), so I would sit/stand there pulling at random parts feeling like there were eyes on me. Even if there were, I realize they don't give a sh*t! What I do now is go to the gym when I know there is no scheduled class, hype myself up in that empty room, do all my pre-machine exercises, review what I am going to do, and go out there and shine!
I was excited in my first day at gym I tried all of machines, for the ones that I didn't know how to use I just ask anyone around me. everyone is helpful and nice to me. Now it's been month and I still try to figure out the best workouts for me. Anyway I'm happy with this experience I've alawys wanted to do it for long time.
I love this!! I was able to overcome my fear of the gym thanks to your videos 🥰 It’s still nervewracking though cause twice now I’ve had random guys come up to me telling me I’m doing something wrong. The first time I admit I was, but the second time I had done my research and knew what I was doing and the guy was giving me incorrect advice. Would love to see a video on how to mentally deal with and move on from unwarranted advice and mansplaining, especially for newbie girls going to the gym!!
Lots of the time, people correcting you are just trying to help you! If it is incorrect, ignore it. But if it is something you don't know, listen and learn! Advice and knowledge from others is so nice but mansplaining is not.
Getting ready for my first time at the gym binge watching your videos!!! Thank you for doing these you have no idea how much it means to us beginners :)
Naomi, your videos have given me so much confidence with my gym work! I had 0 knowledge about form, machines, and I always went alone. Lots of trail and error but two months later, I'm confidently learning more and doing so much better than when i originally started. Continue to inspire the clueless like myself! 😅
Thank you so much! I had my gym membership for months and yesterday was my first day doing your leg workout with the equipment I felt so empowered all thanks to you ❤️❤️
Thanks for always making these types of videos! You are awesome! I have been trying to get comfortable in the gym and it’s still taking some time but your videos have helped me so much! Also, can you do a skin care/hair care video? And a “what I eat in a day video”? I’m struggling with getting all of my protein in for the day because I never know what to eat 😭
I had never done any strength training until last year. I always did home workout and used 15lbs dumbbells at best. Then I joined a gym where everyone is superrrrr buff. I was very intimidated and didn't know what to do. Sure, I could have just done cardio like I always did. But these super buff people actually inspired me. I'd just watch people as I was running on the treadmill and really wanted to do those workouts. I took the help of a personal trainer (who's fairly young and was very affordable). That was the best decision ever. After 3 months with the trainer and learning correct techniques and form, I was not intimidated any longer.
@@naomikong I honestly don't know how much I inspire others, but YOU certainly do. I have watched multiple videos on how to use gym equipment on your channel (and still do). Your channel is amazing. Thank you for all the information you post!!
I just want to thank you. You are so bright, kind, and informative. I have loved watching your videos so far. I have sooo many questions for you! I can’t wait to learn more thank you!
I have been going to the gym for a month now, thanks to your videos! Before I found your channel I didn’t know anything about gym equipment. Now I’m confident when I go and do my workouts. Thank you, Naomi!
I'm so glad I found your channel! I was struggling to use a few machines at the gym and didn't want to ask anybody...watched your videos and not only did I learn how to use the equipment but also do it with the correct form. Thank you x
I followed along with one of your gym videos and it actually really helped me. I didn’t fumble around too much and I got my workout done in a great amount of time!Thank you for your suggestions!
Thanks to your videos I have been going to the gym for the past 3 month consistently and like a pro tysm. I do have a question, as a short person (5ft) I have a very hard time on the hack squat machine as I tend to hit stoppers on the way down and I also get really bad broken blood vessels on my shoulders. Do you have any tips or alternatives? I’m really looking to grow my quads
I’d recommend placing some kind of additional platform on top of the machine’s normal platform to stand on so it gives you a larger range of motion. Otherwise, narrow-stance squats on the Smith Machine with feet a little farther forward than a normal squat would be another great option! The Leg Press with a narrow stance, Bulgarian Split Squats and Split Squats with your front heel elevated are also great exercise variations to place a greater focus on your quads! Sissy Squats, Short-Stance Walking Lunges, and the Leg Extension machine are also great exercises! ☺️
Even as someone normal weight/slim and pretty active/fit (I was a runner first), I was super intimidated my first month at the gym. These videos and having a plan helped me. It also really helped learning the big compounds because that made it so much easier to design workouts and focus on those and a few accessories.
Berkay Mehmedali Hi! I built my workout around compound movements (squat, deadlift, bench press, overhead press, barbell row, hip thrust) with accessories using machines or isolation exercises. I do upper body two or three days and lower body two days. You might not yet have developed the proper movement pattern, stability and strength for full barbell movements if you are beginning but you can always use a regression (less demanding exercise that builds your strength up for that movement). For example, a bodyweight squat, then a kettlebell or goblet squat, then squatting a lighter bar, then then the Olympic barbell alone, then starting gradually adding weight over the weeks. Naomi and others have good beginner workouts you can use as a baseline, but always adapt to what's available to you and your current strength.
I have a question: how do you keep track of how much weight you lift with any particular machine? Do you write it down? Are there apps for that? Or do you not keep track and just feel out what is hard enough for the day?
I began the gym a week a go and ive just been showing up and showing out. Most people at the gym are helpful so dont be afraid to ask questions guys! Show up and kick ass and know we're all there to improve ourselves, no matter the fitness level!
Hi Naomi! Back again hehe. 😌 I was wondering if you could do a video on progressive overload? I have the feeling I’m doing that a little wrong in the gym. My overload rn looks like taking a weight 3 sets x reps with an ascending rep pyramid : 10-15-20! However I don’t lower or upper the weight, I upper the weight by every 2 weeks with 2kg. Is that overload already or am I just doing it all wrong? 🤔
Any time there’s a group of girls working out in the same area as me I’m like “yeah they’re making fun of me because I’m not lifting heavy enough/I’m struggling” and it’s so lame bc I’m sure they’re just trying to get their shit done and leave
Hi Naomi! I do not have a gym partner and I want to begin weight training but I'm nervouse about not knowing my limits so my question is do you get the same results from using machines as you would using free weights?
It all depends on how the free weights & machines are utilized, intensity, workout structure, the specific person, nutrition, etc. 🤷🏻♀️ I personally prefer a mix of both, but I think starting with one or the other is a great way to begin! 🙌🏼 Check out my “Beginner Workouts” for a good place to start. ☺️
