Seen Slayer with Lombardo and Bostaph several times there is no comparison! Great respect for Paul is a good drummer but Dave is THE MAN !! Does't pull back, does't struggle, very fluid and less mechanical !
Lombardo is a drum god for sure, but out of the four times I saw Slayer, the Christ Illusion show was the least impressive. Dave made several mistakes (and knew it). They seemed unfocused and bored. Three times with Paul and they were flawless. Credit where credits due - Bostaph is a machine
Lombardo is the living proof that you don't need a fancy kit with millions of shiny toms and cymbals to be a god! Simple drumkit, even after all these years, and still kickin' it like the best! Hail Dave 🤘
Don't you just absolutely love it when you hear and see fast double bass in metal with absolutely no triggering whatsoever, this is what makes Dave that bit better, how loud, fast and hard he can play is part of his style and sound, I'd rather hear the true sound of the bass drums and the acoustic quality that only hard fast and rapidly played drummers can create ,it opens the sound of the drum kit in a way that metal needs, I wish a few of the modern era drummers out there actually trying to play without the trigger set up, I love how the fast and heavy doubles become almost locked in and taking off and the way my feet feel when I am working it and keeping it steady and just drifting away in the beats playing for ages and letting it out.
24" bass drums actually help in that, because if you'd tune it to have the same frequency as a 22" would, the batter head would be tighter in comparison and thus allow better rebound. Having two bass drums allow them to breathe better and therefor sound less muddy than a double pedal on a single bass would. Because of this I think having double 24s is the secret of the trade. Lombardo also stated that he doesn't muffle his bass drums. A wide open sound sounds inherently bigger.
Here’s the only problem, this is only 200bpm double bass. When you get 230 to 270, it’s almost impossible to hear where (1) is, that’s why we trigger, George Kollias said it.
It sounds completely dead and muffled to me, like one of those Traps kits. Triggers can be used/balanced with a natural drum tone, and often sound better.
Haha spotted the smile and laugh when he realised he was behind after the pause going into the solo. Quickly upped the tempo and slotted right back in. It's not about the mistake it's about how you recover! Legend.
I think it was a matter of other musicians here, they were not clocked well since they didnt play together daily. Its really hard to get into tempo with someone you dont really know. You need to practice that off the scene a little first.
