Back in March of 1983, I was in the USAF, and I got my V-65. I'd never owned or ridden anything bigger than a 125 dirt bike. The power of that thing was unbelievable. On the way back to base, I'd pulled onto the shoulder of the freeway to adjust my helmet strap, and without really thinking about it, just signaled, and pulled back into (65mph) traffic. There was a cabover Peterbilt roaring toward me, so instinctively, I rolled the throttle back, and wham! I was outta there! Zero to sixty-five in less than nothing flat. Talk about a white knuckle ride! The day before my warranty was up, a shift fork broke and locked me in fifth gear. I limped it back to the dealer and they rebuilt it for free.
April 2024, I got another V65 Magna. I found on online, for $2800, with 40,000 actual miles on it. '85, black, excellent condition other than some corrosion on the aluminum parts. Fuel sensor was burned out, but I fixed it. Replaced master cylinders, shocks & repaired exhaust. Still gets 35 mpg.
I love Honda Magnas. I have owned many of them over the years. I got a new 1984 700 magna for high school graduation in 1985. I have owned the 87 Super Magna, 83' 750 Interceptor, and a 85' V65 Sabre. All of these v4's are excellent motors and are super fast. Today, I ride a 93' Yamaha Vmax. The Vmax is a beast, and in 85', dethroned the V65 Magna as the fastest production bike in the world. My 93' is a complete beast of a bike. It is beyond being super fast. I would say owning a Magna and a Vmax are two different types of motorcycles. One is meant to go in strait line and with brute force. The other is a better all around bike and much smoother when riding. This 83' Magna is a bueatiful example of what the 1980's were all about and why the Magna remains a legend until this day.
I still got mine about to start riding it again. Can’t wait. Best thing about it. I bought it for $900 two years ago. Guy was moving couldn’t take it. I was the only one to make an offer
Knew a guy who got one of the 1st ones when it came out. He was cruising one time and a guy on a 1000 hurricane though he was gonne be cute and blow him away. He pulled up alongside and nodded and my friend didnt even shift down but just canned it and the hurricane was left in the dust. Afterward he pulled over and the hurricane rider stopped to talk. He said he had NEVER had another bike di that to him. He was FREAKING INPRESSED.
I presently own a 84 V65 Sabre.. Immaculate condition 3rd. owner got it 2 years ago with 26k on it (about 16k miles) and the did a bunch of upgrades.. very first was oil mod kit, steel brake lines, new clutch and upgraded spring, l.e.d. gauge lights & headlight, brakes rebuilt, brake and clutch master cylinder rebuild, Michelin Pilots and all new fluids, ceramic coated.. She is king of the road LOL! This almost 40 year old bike rides like a cruiser with attitude !
I had the blue 83 put lots of mileage on her I ended up getting 4 sets of cams and rockers. Had her all dressed up with lots of being Loved the V65 Magna.
Buying one tommorow, my buddies said I should have gotten a ninja, they'll be rethinking that when Im leading the street bikes on a 37 old cruiser, oh and it's even obnoxious yellow to complete the rub in
Wow, that’s a beauty. I had one just like it with a lot more miles. It had not been cared for like yours. Shortly after I bought, shifted it hard to 2nd gear and and either finished damaging what the previous owner had started or it was that way when I got it. Got the transmission rebuilt and the bike ran like a champ til I sold it with 41K on the odometer. Had a couple V65 Sabres after the Magna, but the Magna was my favorite.
Me and my 3 brothers all owned V65's. All different years. Mine was an 83 just like this one here. All were equally as fast. We raced them dozens of times. Usually the first one to get 2nd gear was the winner. If the 83 had 10hp. I sure couldn't tell a difference getting off mine and on one of theirs. WE had a blast!! That is until 1 of my brothers traded his on a Vmax. Lol. Damn Max always pulled away 😕.
What great memories!! Yes, Yamaha was not to be outdone with the VMax... Faster and uglier. Regardless, Honda was this king of innovation in the 80's with not only the radical water-cooled V45 and V65, but also the Intercept, Sabre, and Magna. Not to mention what I consider the perfect bike... The shortlived Nighthawk S
Beautiful bike I had an 83 also except it was a deep maroon. Surprised I lived after all the crazy crap I did on it, wheelies at night was a favorite watching the headlight spot the sky. My girl friend burnt her calf on the exhaust and has a scar to this day
I had one identical to this bike back in 1986….was 2nd owner. Looking for another one at the moment….hope I’m lucky enough to come across one like this, WOW!!
I had an 84 V65 and it was burgundy red, they came out with a beautiful brighter red in 85, but the Yamaha V-Max was the fastest cruiser of this era....Nice looking bike!..Enjoy
I have an 83 V45. Maybe looking to add a V65 to the family. The daily tough choice would be deciding which one I'm driving that day.. Cool-ass machines,
I've watched your video a couple times already but never commented on it yeah... I had purchased a 1983 Honda vt750c Shadow back in 96 had it loved it baby that for over 24 years. Recently started taking long trips so I needed something a little larger hence the 06 Honda VTX 1300 handed down the 83 750 to a longtime admirer with 61000 miles on it to be loved and taken care of and garaged by its third owner. The bike is a tank... if I didn't know the Japanese made it, I swear it was russian-built. The 750 is a tank!
I have this exact bike. I actually do not mind the stock bars at all. I took her in for a complete spa treatment this winter. Can not wait til spring to let her out to stretch her legs. My only complaint about the Magnas is their sound. I wish they sounded more like the cbx 1100.
The 84 came in black, bugundy and red. I have an 84, burgundy, 1985 black and an 86, red. He is right about the wheels. I've removed the chrome from my wheels and polished them, looks great. Different jetting on the 83 made it 5-7 hp stronger. 83 was the fastest quarter miler until the v max came out. V max is about a tenth faster in quarter mile
I love my magna got it as a gift a few years back. it's my daily rider right all original not as well kept as yours 😅. I want to rebuild it since it needs a overhaul and give it the bobber look. I've seen a few of them online and they look sharp. Amazing bike tho definitely slams me into the seat with ease they have a ton of power.
Very nice bike Kurt, The Pearl Siren Blue is certainly rare and hard to find. It's my quest to find one, hopefully when I do it looks as nice as yours. I'm a traditionalist, however I do like the handlebar mod you did as the stock pulled back bars are a little wonky as you say. Thanks for posting this.
Thanks Randy. I did sell it a few weeks ago to another Magna enthusiast here in Arizona. He was looking for an 83 blue specifically. glad it will have a new life with another care-giver. Good luck with your search!!
Had one, bought used 1990 had less than 2500 miles. The bike scared the heck out of original owner, too much power, plus rider wasn't too experienced. It sat in his garage for 7 years so he sold it to me. Power was incredible from idle to redline. Wish I still had it.
Thanks for the story. Yeah, there are many times i wish i still had this bike, but i also sold it a few years ago. Loved the torque, loved the look, loved the nostalgia - but i was always afraid it wouldn't start on me during rides - which happened a few times (kill switch corrosion, fuel pump, etc.). This bike had some complicated engineering and was very fussy being 40 years old. I always felt gremlins were lurking - then there was always the fear of worn cam lobes due to insufficient oil pressure these things were notorious for. Ride safe!!
I had a maroon 83 V65, smooth and fast. I upgraded the seat, to a Corbin saddle, made a big difference. It was fastest in 83, the V65 Sabre in 84, The VMax in 85.
Very nice condition. I have an 83 in candy maroon (it's kind of a purplish maroon) - not "candy apple red". I had one exactly like it in the late 80's and early 90's and when I saw this for sale more than 30 years later I just had to have it. They did do 3 different shades of red for 84, 85 & 86 (candy andromedia red, pearl vintage red & candy glory red) along with black. But if it's an 83 it's either your pearl siren blue or my candy maroon.
Certainly love the sound of a v-4. I owned a v-45 but sadly had issues with the oil starved top end which required an external oil modification. Have avoided the first gens ever since. Very nice example.
Dan --- I have a 83', brother has a 85', friend has a 86', no problems, of course we don't race them or ride the bikes real hard, with the rpm up real high.
Kurt, Your bike is really beautiful. I'm amazed at even the lettering on the indicator lights is still bold and legible. Mine is pretty much worn off. Does your antitheft system work? I'm trying to figure out how the one on my 83 v65 works still. It seems to be missing a cylinder of some sort that goes under the rubber cap that has "PUSH" written on it. Nice video too. Take care! Christian
I just bought an 86 that looks like this one. I’d like to get a backrest like this one. Just a couple corrections. It’s 1098cc or 1100 as it’s advertised. It’s a 65 cubic inch reason it’s called V65. In reality it’s a 67 cubic inch. I’m second owner. I bought it from same dealership it was bought new.
Hey Kurt, just watched your video. I still own an 83 Magna that I’ve had since 89. And yes those stock handle bars ARE kinda wonky. And my grips suck too. Never thought about replacing anything till I bought a mew bike w/ comfortable bars. I like the bars you put on w/ the extenders. Do you have a parts list and where you got them. It’s time I change mine out.
83 v65 magna in pearl siren blue is the hottest collectible magna ever IMO. FASTEST by far, 84 detuned for sure. Have had and driven 83 v65 magna, 84 honda 698cc magna, 85 V30 chain drive 500cc magna and also a 1997 honda 750 magna. All GREAT bikes in their own right for sure. IMO seat of pants feel by far 83 v65 magna wicked fast while the 97 750 magna 2nd fastest.
Loved your review if the 83 Magna V65. I have the same bike ; 85 VF1100 which I’ve neglected for several months and now have issues with reviving over 1500 rpm. Tried adding fresh gas. Also added enzyme fuel treatment but no change. Don’t have any knowledge about cleaning carbs but suspect that’s the issue. Any thoughts? Tom
Hi Tom, thanks! If you can't get the RPMs up, then the engine is probably not getting enough fuel. Check your fuel pump that is has sufficient pressure. Or, 1 or a few of your main jets are plugged with evaporated gas deposits. This usually only happens to the pilot jet and the bike won't start. This happens all the time to us here in Arizona with that crap Ethanol blended gas. I only run VP Fuels Ethanol free gas in all my carbureted vintage bikes. Otherwise they get destroyed by sitting. You can try to remove the float bowls and unscrew the main jets to inspect them and run a cleaning wire though them all.
At our shop us mechanics tried to hide when these came in for work! LOL The carbs in the valley between the "V" are an absolute bitch to work on. A nightmare. A common job was the bike had been left sitting - and the carbs all clogged up with rotten gas. Cleaning them out was a $1,000 job.
Love Love that bike !! Got it Brand new in 83 and was given the poster of the bike at the drag striodoing a burn out.Sure wish I never got rid of mine always LOVED on her... was a wife thing! she's not around like the bike.. LMAO
DG --- Same here, but I got rid of the ball & chain! but kept the bike, lol, I have 1983 V65 Magna with sissy bar, windshield designed for bike, soft grips, & engine safer when purchased. Like new, less than 10,000 miles.
Where did you get info about difference in HP number as in the Honda service manual all Magnas are rated at 116 HP. As far as the carbs the only difference btw them is the size of the main jets with 83 having the largest #140. Sabres that came in 1984 were more powerful, rated at 121 HP and they were faster than Magna. Beautiful bike, I have V65 from 1986 in pristine condition with 13k mile on the clock.
i like oid bikes that are very clean......i just bought a 750c with only 8k miles.....but it looks like it was park outside all the time....i only bought it because it waw very cheap and it was my practice bike
Shane --- I don't know what you mean by value, unless you mean valve, never had any problem with my 83', I owned it since new my friend has a 86', no problem with valves.
Put a 4 into 1 Kerker exhaust on it.....and rejet carbs. It will smoke a stock VMax....if ya wind it up ....and hang on tight. Don't shift to late in 1st....blast thru 2nd....and 3rd is wear ya loose the competition....hit 4th at 8500 rpm at around 110+. A new back tire is a must..... otherwise ya gonna be just spinning the rear tire.... especially in 3rd.
Hi there... myt V65 handle bar setup in the video is pretty simple. The bars i got from Dennis Kirk: Chrome 7/8 in. CB750K Replica Handlebar - 23-93145 (Part #: 599796) for $36. The risers are basic 1" aluminum 7/8" bar risers that you can get on Amazon for about $23. See here: www.amazon.com/Tusk-Handlebar-Risers-Height-Fits/dp/B0145REG62/ref=sr_1_7?dchild=1&keywords=7%2F8%22+1+inch+riser+handlebar&qid=1613415297&sr=8-7
Great!! You will love this set up. I just added this info to the description tab on the video. Others have asked about this mod. Have a good one! -Kurt
Depends on what you're used to. Sport riding, go with the Sabre - It's a more "prone" seating position. Cruising or touring, go with the Magna - it's more laid back.
Yeah, i sold it shortly after i made the video to another "v65 admirer". I have other vintage bikes, and it's hard to keep them all running! :( hated to see it go, but went to a good home. !
@@kurt5299 wow! 5500? i'm struggling to get any interest at 1000 for mine here in the uk, sitting for 4 years but only 20k on the clock and loads of spares....
Pat --- I have a Blue 1983 V65 Magna I purchased NEW! Extra's that I purchased with the bike are soft grips, engine saver, windshield designed for the bike, sissy bar & pad, on the back of the chrome sissy bar is a big gold Eagle with V65 MAGNA printed right in the middle of the eagle with the letters in blue, same as bike, with less than 10,000 miles on it, the only thing I have done is replaced tires & brakes, then change all fluids every year like clock work, including drive shaft & front fork oil. I love the three way handle bars on my bike, I can set them just right, 1983 was the only year for them & many other items that were 83' only. Love my bike! Even though I have a 2019 Indian I still favor my V65 it so sleek & stylish, the perfect Muscle Cruiser.
Sorry bro, i sold this back in 2020. That's basically why i made the video. No regrets, it was fun to have for a while. There are many V65s still out there for you!

That's an awesome story. Yes, the V65 pulls as hard as any high HP modern bike today. Just brute torque!
Impressed the dealer honoured the warranty. I would not expect that now.

The first V4 Magna was built in 1982 and it was a V45
Hey Kurt, just watched your video. I still own an 83 Magna that I’ve had since 89. And yes those stock handle bars ARE kinda wonky. And my grips suck too. Never thought about replacing anything till I bought a mew bike w/ comfortable bars. I like the bars you put on w/ the extenders. Do you have a parts list and where you got them. It’s time I change mine out.
Hi David, click on "show more" under the description of my video and I detail the parts i used for the bar swap! Enjoy!
I had the exact same bike back in 89. Absolutely love it! Nothing like the torque from a v4?
Hoping to find or piece together a clean one someday
83 s had 130 hp, the 85 i had was 120.....great bikes
lovely bike !
Very very very very very and very nice !!!
Powerful comfortable and i weighed 140 pounds niceon the highway probably the best bike ieverhad and the v65 sabre
LOL
The carbs in the valley between the "V" are an absolute bitch to work on. A nightmare.
A common job was the bike had been left sitting - and the carbs all clogged up with rotten gas.
Cleaning them out was a $1,000 job.
I love my bike, I've got the 85 model.
Love Love that bike !! Got it Brand new in 83 and was given the poster of the bike at the drag striodoing a burn out.Sure wish I never got rid of mine always LOVED on her... was a wife thing! she's not around like the bike.. LMAO
Good news is they're super cheap now
DG --- Same here, but I got rid of the ball & chain! but kept the bike, lol, I have 1983 V65 Magna with sissy bar, windshield designed for bike, soft grips, & engine safer when purchased.
Very nice sir...👍👍
... oh, an afterthought. Might consider a fork brace for it. They can and have cracked.
damn and here i was thinking my dads magna was the nicest one around
I have an 85 with 25000 on it it is still perfect
Sweet ass bike fore sure !
i like oid bikes that are very clean......i just bought a 750c with only 8k miles.....but it looks like it was park outside all the time....i only bought it because it waw very cheap and it was my practice bike
It’s awesome
very nice your the man
I have a black 1985, I love it
84 and 83 had to have the value adjusted I didn’t know about the 85 and up
Shane --- I don't know what you mean by value, unless you mean valve, never had any problem with my 83', I owned it since new my friend has a 86', no problem with valves.
Very Very Nice!
Very nice V65. I have an '86 and I want to do a bar upgrade. Can you give me the part #'s of the handle bar and risers you have installed on yours?
Hi there... myt V65 handle bar setup in the video is pretty simple. The bars i got from Dennis Kirk: Chrome 7/8 in. CB750K Replica Handlebar - 23-93145 (Part #: 599796) for $36. The risers are basic 1" aluminum 7/8" bar risers that you can get on Amazon for about $23. @@kurt5299 Thanks for the response. Parts ordered and will be ready for spring riding !
Great!! You will love this set up. I just added this info to the description tab on the video. Others have asked about this mod. Have a good one! -Kurt
A handsome brute
Is the magna or the sabre more comfortable to ride?
Depends on what you're used to. Sport riding, go with the Sabre - It's a more "prone" seating position. Cruising or touring, go with the Magna - it's more laid back.
Beautiful bike! Classic. Did you sell it?
Yeah, i sold it shortly after i made the video to another "v65 admirer". I have other vintage bikes, and it's hard to keep them all running! :( hated to see it go, but went to a good home. !
Its a beatiful machine , do u sell it?
Thks for your time
Yeah, I sold it for $5,500 to a Phoenix local. Already miss her! :(
@@kurt5299 wow! 5500? i'm struggling to get any interest at 1000 for mine here in the uk, sitting for 4 years but only 20k on the clock and loads of spares....
@@dazasc3994 getting ready to buy a 94 magna with 34k for $1000. If you lived closer I'd buy it from you for sure.
1100 cubic inch....damn!!!!
Have 2 83 and 84.
Lucky man, my '84 Magna doesn't have a gear position Indicator.
Sorry to chime in after a long time. You still got it?
oh, sold it shortly after this video was made in 2020. Hated to sell it. But, I had the "too many things with handlebars in the garage" syndrome. :D
i have a 10,000 mile 1983 v65 project for sale. bike last ran and was inspected in the summer of 2020. currently not running. $1,500. upstate ny.
If you still have this bike I suggest you switch to Nighthawk handlebars. You can thank me later
I've been looking at some 1983, same color. Not nearly as nice as this. Any advice on ballpark price I should be paying?
Hi. I sold this one with all the accessories for about $5800 a few years ago
I have the same bike complete stock
is it for sale??
Mint 👌
No oil mod???? That should be the first thing to address.
1099cc. 65 cubic inches.
1098
@@toddportner7172 really? Have you checked out my burnout videos on you tube?
If you sell it, will you give me a chance to buy it? I have always wanted one!!
Sorry bro, i sold this back in 2020. That's basically why i made the video. No regrets, it was fun to have for a while. There are many V65s still out there for you!
@@kurt5299 Please pass my info along if you can in case he ever wants to sell it! It's a beautiful bike! I really take care of my stuff. I have a truck that I restored that don't get driven in the rain. My name is Jeffrey Stapler 256-603-6264. I'm in Alabama. What state are you all in?
