    After driving in and out of Mexico frequently, we have a dash cam. Great piece of mind, even in the US.

      Yes, there are a number of experts here that have commented on keeping a dash cam in their car. Many even say they have both a front and rear for the very reason we talked about.

    Thanks for creating this video! It's cheaper and safer to live in Xela compared to here. I hope one day we can move outside Guatemala city.

      I’m curious to know, how much more expensive would you say life in the city would be, on average? Maybe 50%? 100%?

      We do enjoy the City too though.

      For us after visiting a number of times I think the biggest difference would be the rent cost. We could find something in the same price range but if we moved to the city we know we would want to stay in a high rise is zone 13 or 14 or 4 or 10. So we would probably have to add another 2000-4000 Q on to our rent budget. But our car cost would go down. But I think once we found the rent we wanted everything else would be very similar.

      @@LifeinGuatemalaI'm curious to know how your car cost would go down. I wouldn't expect that. The price you guys are paying for rent in Xela can't be matched here if you want to live in a safe neighborhood. Unless you live in the gated communities way up north in zone 2. In the zones you mentioned the rents are usually $900-3000 per month $900 if you're lucky to get a deal and that's for a 1 or 2 bedroom apartment. 😂 To actually rent a house for 6 people in a safe neighborhood would cost a lot more.

      @@KerryinGuatemala well, if we sold the car we would save on maintenance and gas for starters. Parking fees when we went out would be another savings. If we went to the City it would be after the girls graduated, so it would just be Brian and me and the dog. We have looked at some of the high rises on Las Americas and even stayed in a couple of them as Airbnb’s. We enjoyed it.

      It is surely doable. Being single helps for sure. We are living our retirement here and so our preferences are probably very different than hers. I hope she is enjoying herself and the life she is making here. This place steals your heart for sure.

    Is Xela, Guatemala cheaper cost of living than Cuenca, Ecuador?

    • @LifeinGuatemala
      @LifeinGuatemala  25 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      I wish I could be more helpful but we have never lived in Ecuador or any other foreign country. I can tell you that Xela is less expensive than Guatemala City but many small towns would be cheaper than Xela. It is definitely less expensive overall than living in the US

    Can you guys recommend a good private hospital where we can get general check ups? I don’t have health insure here in the US until the end of November but I’m going to be in Guatemala November/ Xela maybe in December

      We use La Paz, they are here in Xela and also Guatemala City and I think Huehuetenango. They are not the least expensive but compared to costs in the states we have been very happy with their care and what we have needed to pay. I know the InterAmerican School uses Hospital Privado, and it looks like a nice place and I am told they also provide excellent care but do not have personal experience with them. There are also a number of private clinics or just private doctor offices to call and try. Many of the doctors do have offices in the hospitals too.

      Yes please share! I have Tmobile here in the states and when I travel to Guate I have to pay the $50 international plan for I think 5g of fast data or for a 30 day period which ever comes first. It’s so expensive 😭

      @@jday3671 When you travel, you have a couple of options. If you have a phone that can add a second SIM or eSIM to it, you can get either a Claro or Tigo SIM for anywhere from a day to a month and prepay for it. I pay a month at a time Q110 and that is $15 USD. That gives me calls, messages and internet data. There is a free app called Whatsapp and I highly recommend it if you are traveling here. Most people use it, even businesses. You can text and call free to most anywhere in the world to other people with the app. So make sure before you travel, family and friends have the app installed as well. The data usage is free when you buy the pre paid plans on Tigo and Claro so you can use Whatsapp when you are not on wifi and still not use up your data.
