The irony is that while Buddhism promotes the loss of desires and personal identity, Byakuren Hijiri chose physical immortality (by learning from Youkai) instead of choosing death+reincarnation and the potential Nirvana which Buddhism promises to those who have achieved perfection. I love Hijiri by the way. I'm just sad that her chosen faith is insufficient to reach either harmony or personal fulfillment. I would love to see the Youkai come into harmony with Humanity by realigning their core concepts with actual truth, but I doubt that Yukari and the other Sages would allow it without a fight.
That's mostly because Gensokyo is already close to being her ideal world. Youkai and humans no longer kill each other after all (as long as they're from Gensokyo that is)
This was absolutely fantastic. I feel the lyrics really did capture how Byakuren wanted her message to be taken. This was also really lengthy it must've take so much time to finish and get all the clips sewed together, thank you so much for your hard work to add this unique flare to the Touhou Music community. I hope too that someday Reimu will see the light of Byakurens plea to join yokai and humans in this world of segregation and hatred. To dare consider her a friend rather than a business rival.
Two years and 3 months. That is how long I have waited for this video. And each and every second I was patient, was more worth it than words could ever express. Honestly there were times I considered asking you if I could cover it 1st cause I was so eager, and always sang it myself. Even had 2:32-2:57 as my status on Skype for like half a year. But you've gotten so much better at singing since then (You can hit the high notes now!) created such a beautiful visual to go with it, and was able to execute 0:58- 1:09 (of which with my love of this song, was always worried about whenever reading the lyrics) and it's just... all around simply amazing. This is my favorite song out of the entirety of the Touhou series and I could never ask for a better rendition. You've brought me to chills, you've brought me to tears. Thank you so much for fulfilling that request I made all the way back in January 4th, 2015. This truly is my own treasure that I will cherish dear.
Geez... Talk about "many trials of our patience"; the song couldn't be any more fitting for you. I'm sometimes nervous about putting up WIPs, worrying about people being disappointed in waiting and then being underwhelmed by the eventual product. It's not just that Byakuren's peace would upset the balance of power in Gensokyo, though. Her ideology would literally make the Youkai go extinct. They need Humans to fear them in order to exist- otherwise they just stop existing. It's why the Youkai are mostly gone from the Outsode World- people stopped fearing and believing in the.
The Youkai outside didn't die out, they were all teleported. If the gensoukyans forgot about Youkai, the barrier would weaken. But, just because humans wouldn't fear Youkai anymore, doesn't mean the barrier would be affected. It *is* the current method, yes, but they can live in harmony too, no?
Youkai outside did die out. The Yamabiko are a good example: when Science determined that Echoes where a physical and natural phenomenon, the Yamabiko began to die out and go extinct. Very few remain and they are an endangered species even within Gensokyo. Byakuren is a fool, and her vision of peace and harmony would only bring disaster to Gensokyo.
Here's a literal quote from the Touhou wiki: "However, the phenomenon of "spiriting away" can also cause objects and even living beings to slip through the border at random, particularly if they have started to be forgotten by the outside world. For instance the crested ibis started to become more common in Gensokyo after the Japanese variety were recognised as extinct, and paper started showing up more frequently with the rise of digital storage." And this doesn't just happen in error. Several inhabitants of Gensoukyo have direct roots in the outside world: "Even in modern times, it is still possible for youkai, gods and even entire locations (such as the Ruined Western Mansion, Scarlet Devil Mansion and Moriya Shrine) to pass through the border and enter Gensokyo."

I have to say I never really liked Cosmic Mind and I'm also not a huge fan of the background echo singing that overlaps the beautiful main melody vocals, but this is another amazing song you've done either way. Love all the work on your channel. c: I heard you'll never do stage themes, but once you've exhausted all the boss themes it would be MAGNIFICENT if you went on to the stage themes as well. Heh, I appreciate the faith you have in me that I'll ever exhaust all the boss themes... But I do very much doubt that, and I don't like to look too far ahead of that huge backload I still have... Also, I've heard that from a couple people about background vocals; sorry about that. I agree in part because the whole main point of covering the original ZUN track, rather than an arrange, is to pay tribute to the foreground melody. It's just that when I get a specific (if sometimes amateurish) vision of how I want something to work, I'm a little too attached to it and feel as if it sounds too empty otherwise. So I often find a good way to justify it for myself-- I especially couldn't resist here where it felt like it evoked her followers heralding her like a saint and chanting with her. In any case, thank you for the support regardless.~
Well...yeah, true lol. There's like a million of them especially if you include PC-98 that almost no one cares about as well, also all the new games that ZUN comes up with. Still, you've done a lot of the "crucial" ones already so the remaining ones are more small fry than the Big Dons. :P I'm sure you'll do it eventually~ And for sure we'll love all of them. ;3 And yeah, I do understand regarding the background vocals. They just seem to drown out the main ones at some parts of the first half of the theme. In a stark contrast to decline of youkai in the Outer World, if the proof of youkai existance was widely considered truth (Mabey by an outsider nation, propogated by that one) Via examples of a few rouge humans who may enter and leave gensokyo, would not the propogation of Youkai, even within that new, rouge nation, restart the spread of youkai? Lets take an example. Even if not directly fearing them (Due to human modernization and power balance and projection via armies) If Youkai were just taught to exist using gensokyo (Which may or may not be actually revealed by this group) as just fact, and bringing youkai back with them perhaps, weakened though they may be from the crossing, as examples (Mabey as a more extreme and comprehensive version of the Yumemi Plan), would this nation be able to, by brute force and a combination of science and belief, bring youkai into thier territory, and gods even, as physical phenomena? If so then would the raw belief of their existance by billions or millions, and their integration and propagation by this nation void the reason for existance of the gensokyan pocket dimension? Or would the nation be immediately ganged up on by Lunarians, the UN, and even the Gensokyans as a balance upsetter? This is assuming such a group of outsider humans devised the plan to become a nation for this reason, using youkai as thier primary backup for thier legitimacy.

This is the only Touhou final boss theme of a game I've actually played, albeit not a Touhou game. The finale of the Star Revenge series (a series based on Super Mario 64) is Touhou-themed and culminates in a quest to rebuild Mario's world.

The Youkai outside didn't die out, they were all teleported. If the gensoukyans forgot about Youkai, the barrier would weaken.
But, just because humans wouldn't fear Youkai anymore, doesn't mean the barrier would be affected. It *is* the current method, yes, but they can live in harmony too, no?
Youkai outside did die out. The Yamabiko are a good example: when Science determined that Echoes where a physical and natural phenomenon, the Yamabiko began to die out and go extinct. Very few remain and they are an endangered species even within Gensokyo.
Byakuren is a fool, and her vision of peace and harmony would only bring disaster to Gensokyo.
Here's a literal quote from the Touhou wiki:
"However, the phenomenon of "spiriting away" can also cause objects and even living beings to slip through the border at random, particularly if they have started to be forgotten by the outside world. For instance the crested ibis started to become more common in Gensokyo after the Japanese variety were recognised as extinct, and paper started showing up more frequently with the rise of digital storage."
And this doesn't just happen in error. Several inhabitants of Gensoukyo have direct roots in the outside world:
"Even in modern times, it is still possible for youkai, gods and even entire locations (such as the Ruined Western Mansion, Scarlet Devil Mansion and Moriya Shrine) to pass through the border and enter Gensokyo."
When Byakuren's verse was going at 1:04, it really confused me because im hearing
"I know that we can meet in peace, it's more than just a fantasy." instead of what's on the screen

I heard you'll never do stage themes, but once you've exhausted all the boss themes it would be MAGNIFICENT if you went on to the stage themes as well. I might as well just die and go to heaven once that happens. Still looking forward to any Touhou vocals you do regardless~

Also, I've heard that from a couple people about background vocals; sorry about that. I agree in part because the whole main point of covering the original ZUN track, rather than an arrange, is to pay tribute to the foreground melody. It's just that when I get a specific (if sometimes amateurish) vision of how I want something to work, I'm a little too attached to it and feel as if it sounds too empty otherwise. So I often find a good way to justify it for myself-- I especially couldn't resist here where it felt like it evoked her followers heralding her like a saint and chanting with her. In any case, thank you for the support regardless.~
Well...yeah, true lol. There's like a million of them especially if you include PC-98 that almost no one cares about as well, also all the new games that ZUN comes up with. Still, you've done a lot of the "crucial" ones already so the remaining ones are more small fry than the Big Dons. :P I'm sure you'll do it eventually~ And for sure we'll love all of them. ;3
And yeah, I do understand regarding the background vocals. They just seem to drown out the main ones at some parts of the first half of the theme. I'm also a perfectionist when it comes to arranges of Touhou music (the closer to the original, the better) so I completely get that you wanted to emphasize the background melody as well since it's noticeable in the original. In a stark contrast to decline of youkai in the Outer World, if the proof of youkai existance was widely considered truth (Mabey by an outsider nation, propogated by that one) Via examples of a few rouge humans who may enter and leave gensokyo, would not the propogation of Youkai, even within that new, rouge nation, restart the spread of youkai?
Lets take an example. Even if not directly fearing them (Due to human modernization and power balance and projection via armies) If Youkai were just taught to exist using gensokyo (Which may or may not be actually revealed by this group) as just fact, and bringing youkai back with them perhaps, weakened though they may be from the crossing, as examples (Mabey as a more extreme and comprehensive version of the Yumemi Plan), would this nation be able to, by brute force and a combination of science and belief, bring youkai into thier territory, and gods even, as physical phenomena?
If so then would the raw belief of their existance by billions or millions, and their integration and propagation by this nation void the reason for existance of the gensokyan pocket dimension?
Or would the nation be immediately ganged up on by Lunarians, the UN, and even the Gensokyans as a balance upsetter?
This is assuming such a group of outsider humans devised the plan to become a nation for this reason, using youkai as thier primary backup for thier legitimacy.

Magical Peaceful Priest~ Youkai Peace Treaty
This is the only Touhou final boss theme of a game I've actually played, albeit not a Touhou game. The finale of the Star Revenge series (a series based on Super Mario 64) is Touhou-themed and culminates in a quest to rebuild Mario's world.
Damn that chorus is *powerful*. I think the beginning verse could use some work but I love that middle part.
