Report says UK 'actively avoided' investigating alleged Russian interference in British politics

  • No one is protecting Britain's democratic processes from interference by the Russian state. (Subscribe: bit.ly/C4_News_Subscribe)
    That's the verdict of MPs on the Parliamentary committee that oversees the work of Britain's spy agencies.
    Their judgment was revealed in a long-awaited report on Russia's attempts to influence elections in Britain.
    The committee accused the government of ignoring claims that Russia tried to interfere in both the Scottish and Brexit referendums.
    And they said the influence of a wealthy Russian elite on the UK's public life was now a " new normal".

      @Paul G I'm sure you voted with your conscience, and I have no problem with that, but before any election, or in this case referendum, there are people who haven't made up their mind how to vote, even two weeks before the date - but they vote anyway. Those are the people that campaigns are aimed at, not those of us who've already made up our minds.
      The biggest influence I'm aware of was the targeted advertising, on Facebook. Facebook's profiling system was used to identify who to show the ads to. I'm not aware of any outside influence being involved - just a lot of money being spent to swing votes, from people who hadn't made up their minds but voted anyway.
      It does show that there's potential for outside influence though. Whether that happened, I don't know, and it seems neither do the government. It seems to me it's their job to know, If they avoided looking, they definitely weren't doing their job.

      Here we are one year on and we can now actively report on how damaging Brexit actually has been to the UK even taking out the pandemic and the Ukraine war. In fact I think Britain departing the EU was even more damaging to the EU itself. Had the UK still been a member and its MEPs galvanizing support throughout the EU against Russia expansionism (instead of childishly whining and posturing). I suspect we would have a more committed EU with the help of UK intelligence and leadership which could well have acted as a greater deterrent to Putin. In effect you have to wonder how many percentage points the alleged highly effective Russian supported disinformation and redirection of the voting public swung the final vote towards leave? th-cam.com/video/S0osFjN4MX0/w-d-xo.html

      @Charles White I'm afraid you are confusing globalisation of the information which describes exactly what you said aka. unrestricted flow of content, the free shift of paradigms, the swing of trends & domination of network influencers, with something this report flags e.g. cyber-warfare, cyber-espionage, large scale data-harvest & broad-spectrum of unidirectional content creation by foreign adversaries. You see that's a quite easy thing to confuse if you do not study a subject in-depth. Just as one very small yet crucial example (which importance was shown by Cambridge Analytica, Emerdata, SCL & IQ Aggregate): You see in the old times every advert or newspaper article could have been tracked to the source. If someone made a false claim or lied could end-up in theory behind bars. Enters "social media" behemoth like Facebook - a platform that can generate personalised content for advertisers, a platform that can feed you details about personas, and in return present personalised adverts & sponsored content disguised as posts. You can target people by age, gender, preferences, opinions & even very narrow location. Can you see how that can be used to impact public opinion? No? Well, this happened on a large scale in the Brexit referendum - some social-media campaigns were fueled by few £m each. This campaigns affected millions of voters and no one till this day knows what was true content of this adds as no trace is left. So wake up from your fairytale mate and realise its cyber-war all over the place.

      @Charles White
      I hate to break this to you but information warfare was a thing before the Internet. This is not a matter of paranoia. This is a matter of vigilance.
      Perhaps the mere POSSIBILITY of malicious, external interference in British politics is hard to accept because it casts doubt on your supposed victories. But before you dismiss this suggestion by calling me a liberal extremist who wants to suppress debate I would like to point out that I did not vote to remain in the EU (and at this stage I'm even less convinced that we should). I am just more concerned about our democracy being genuinely democratic than I am about getting my way.
      So here's what I want you to ask yourself first... If the British public are savvy enough to hear both sides of an argument and make an informed decision then why do political campaigns bother to spend money on advertising? Can we not be swayed without even realising it?
      This is bigger than Brexit so think carefully before you rush to conclude that the power of advertising (as its known) is just as fictitious as information warfare. If we bury our heads we can (and almost certainly will) be exploited in much more sinister ways.

    • @richardmarsh4993
      @richardmarsh4993 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Charles White
      It's not insulting to Leave voters. Or Remain voters. Or Tory voters. Or Labour voters.
      No one is saying that every Euroskeptic voted Leave because of foreign influence. We had Euroskepticism before we had this issue. Didn't we?
      If anything your argument is insulting to Remain voters. Are they too thick to appreciate a "strong argument" or what?
      The problem is that SOME people are more suggestible than others. So just because you are immune that doesn't mean everyone else is. And it doesn't take a lot to swing a closely matched race does it?
      But let's be honest. You don't care as long as it works in your favour. You already blanked my point about the power of advertising as if there's no such thing. And that was just an example. Derren Brown can give you a dozen more.
      And now you're playing the same game. Repeating simple mind tricks like "it's an insult" and "the liberal elites" (with absolutely no sense of irony) to try and avoid a proper investigation into the matter.
      What are you going to tell me next? Brexiteers are immune to cognitive bias too? SNP voters are easily swayed by weak arguments? You already suggested that Leave voters are superior to Remain voters (because they know a "strong argument" when they see one).

    The intelligence services have to be told in order to investigate?
    Why should they receive orders from the politicians to do so?
    And if those politicians are corrupt then what happens?

      Every government in the world tries to interfere in the politics of other governments. That's what government's do. Do you think the UK, US & EU government's had no hand in the destabilisation of the Ukraine.
      Foreign governments are going to try and interfere in your elections and politics, it's what they do. I'm sure almost every government in the world have secret departments set up for the concept.
      I'm almost sure the Russians have been continually interfering in British politics for well over 150 years.
      The only real question is, how effective is there interference and did it actually change any out come ever.
      The point of my comment was, you are a crediting to the Russians more power and influence then they actually have.

Do you think the FSB would have been leaving nerve agents lying around Salisbury if Thatcher had ben PM?
