  • Join Mike Pullen as he spends a solo overnight under a blanket shelter and builds fire torches to keep the bugs away. With temperatures reaching 25 degrees celcius, high humidity and little to no wind, Mike arrives to the woods at 6pm and gives himself 90 minutes to build a frame for his shelter, get a fire going, cook food and make torches from natural materials to keep the bugs at bay. The forest beckons us to go hiking, fills our thoughts. You can't stay at home anymore! You literally rip your jacket and backpack off the hanger. You set off on a journey where there are no people, and nature is especially beautiful. The smells of wet needles and last year's foliage are carried by warm air, which, like a powerful stream, passes through you. You can't get enough of them. Smoke-smelling camping food and clothing. The forest accepts us as we are. We are his guests, not his hosts. And we are grateful to him. How can it be boring for someone in this world, where you can look at the pattern of veins on a green leaf for several hours. Great video. 👍

That's not easy to do in Europe. Pretty much every piece of woods is protected, digging into the roots is illegal. I couldn't even do that in the military on army property. It takes a huge amount of paperwork and permissions to be able to do that kind of thing. He's lucky he knows someone who owns this privately, otherwise even the camping would be illegal in a public forest

🇨🇦❤️Thank you again for another thoroughly enjoyable video.
I love going with you on your adventures especially because I’ve been on my own in lockdown for about fifteen months and counting. (I’m ok though because I’m kind of a solitary type and I feel badly for younger people that have missed so much).
I follow a few people on TH-cam and some of them play a lot of music in their videos and that’s fine if I happen to like the music, but the fact that you don’t need a soundtrack is one of the things that I appreciate most about yours.
The sounds of nature make beautiful music, in my opinion.
Thursday’s would be perfect from my perspective because none of the other people that I watch regularly put out their videos out that day, so yours would give me something to look forward to each Thursday.
I couldn’t help think of your wife when you spoke about getting some sleep. When my daughter was little, I vowed to myself that someday I’d catch up on the sleep I lost and now that I’m entering my late 60’s, I’m finally doing just that. I hope your wife is able to get a good nights rest from time to time. Also, you made me laugh when you mentioned the word carnage because living with a two year old is like living with a small and hyper drunk person sometimes. 😂

I think you could have used just the bank line with a zig zag pattern from the lower side rail, over the top around the opposite side lower rack and back again. Perhaps with a loop on each rail. This would work I believe and keep your rope longer for reuse. Just a thought. GDB

Get yourself a pack of reusable cable ties at 20-30 cm for making tripods etc. If your still keen of tying everything please consider using the clove hitch, with an overhand knot to secure (if need be). I grew up in a family of sailors and climbers. Every time I see people using this weirdo jam knot.. duh! Good knots are easy to tie under every condition, hold tied and can be opened after being under tension. There's absolutely no need to cut a rope ever. If you ever need a knot that does not need to be opened (easily) again, use a constrictor knot, which is a version of the clove hitch, which tightens without tension in itself.
Besides that.. love your channel! Great variety of in and output.

Here it is you have a woolblanket/oilskin and I'm thinking 'he'll to something like an Adirondike set up'... but NOOOOo... you built and full blown Military Wall Tent! You don't do anything half way! What an awesome campout.
Your Knot is a Weaver's Knot. I was taught, your loose tail should go: under, over, over, under. Under the long cord then over the cord, over the loop, then under the loop and through. This knot should tighten against the other knot and prevent both knots from coming loose. Weavers, knitters and crocheters use this knot because you can trim the ends of the tails off.

Congratulations on your coffee line. I really like the oilskin/wool as one unit. Great content. I have always called that knot you show at the end of the video a "blood knot".

I've been keeping the strings from the tops of bags of animal feed for cordage lately. Those strings are tough, never seem to break down, and I've already bought the things anyway.

I can tell you I’ve cut myself on those a few times they don’t break😂

@@tomgillespie195 Oh yeah, cuts right through the skin when you pull the wrong end! Seriously tough stuff. I was opening bags of chicken feed this winter and thinking what a waste. I wrap the strings around a stick to keep them neat and use them for all kinds of stuff in the garden now.

Nice shelter I have an canvas oilskin blanket similar to yours but have only used it under me. With fire season in Saskatchewan a campstove is a little safer than the twig stove but there is nothing nicer than a fire

Hello there. You guys have some beautiful country over there. I live in Denham Springs louisiana in the U.S., our summers are usually temps in the mid to upper 90's with heat index exceeding 100 and humidity in the upper 90's to 100, that 77 degrees would be so welcome, our summer nights is like in the mid 80's. In other words, I would sure love to be somewhere else during the summer. Lol. Keep up the great videos and I'll keep watching

I have got one of Blues poncho/ blankets. Only used in the rain a couple of times ( it is HOT when walking!) but it is so solid. He made it a bit smaller than his standard size for me as well and it fits perfectly ( I have 'ducks disease' - ie I am short!) Would really really recommend his gear, and this item in particular.

Great Video, Mike! I wish I didn't have to give up tarp camping in the summer. Maybe this is a solution.

    • @TAOutdoors
      @TAOutdoors  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

It’s something a little different. Harder to setup than a tarp but could be great in winter too for heat retention.

The way you connected your salvage cordage is also a knot used by knitters and crocheters.

2x2s are pretty much only good for using as blanket and A-frames leantos as well as hammock roof or secondary roof say if you have a bright orange tent you want to make stealth for viewers from the top of you are camping in low grounds..there aren't many conversions you Can do because they are so compact..cool blow up mat...btw Mike if you are into rigging your own gear you could reduce the weight and keep the heat of that 2x2 by sewing a reflective mylar blanket on the reverse side instead of the wool..congradulations on the coffee man
