- Join me on the DIY store Survival challenge during a heavy rainstorm. I have to build a bubble wrap shelter, start a fire and survive 24hrs in the woods with minimal cheap gear bought from a diy hardware store in the UK called B&Q.

Oh Boy, don´t let your Dad see, that you bought new Nails 😂
🤣 first thing I thought I bought when I bought them. I could almost feel him scowling at me through the camera
@@TAOutdoorsWhat happened to all the nailed in nails in the shelter wood frame?
Your idea of using the bath shelf to cook reminded me of an incident from my childhood.
Like many folk on housing schemes we never had a car but we were great ones for camping and picnics.
We would pack everything into dads rucksack and the things that could be tainted by dads old parifin primus were carefully packed in mums string bag ,and of we'd go to catch the train.
Balloch was our favourite place. On this particular day we arrived on the station platform and dad suddenly asked " who brought the kettle?" The younger of my big brothers was at that time employed at the old Buchanan st Station, so he went to the station masters house and his wife let us borrow a kettle.
We walked up the side of the loch and found a nice quiet spot and settled down to make a brew and get food on. That was when we discovered the kettle wasnt the only missing item we were minus a frying pan.
My oldest brother had gone down to the loch to fill the kettle, we were a lot less worried about things like that back then. He spotted an old electric fire that some stupid person had thrown in the water, in he waded and dragged it out.
They stripped it down and dad used the refle tor platebehind th bars to cook the sausages and bacon. Best picnic ever😊
What an awesome story!
Sounds awesome
My small story in this vein is the time my dad took us camping but nobody packed bowls. We did, however, have a couple of cantalopes along. Each of us ate a half of a cantalope and then we could have our cerial and milk in our cantalope bowl!
I’m glad we weren’t camping together… I can’t resist popping bubble wrap. All you would have heard all night is “pop…pop…pop pop pop pop pop!”
😂
Always like the sound of rain when I'm warm n dry lol
Might have been a good idea to unfurl some of the bubble wrap over the bed to keep it dry while you built the frame.
Yes! That definitely would have helped lol my focus was on saving my camera gear at the time.
Just what I was going to comment. It's just common sense, really.
Or have gotten a cheap tarp.
@@sueevansProoovviitt You would think so but in the context of a time crunch and juggling filming too, its understandable to overlook things.
@@burnzy3210this is exactly what a lot of people don’t realise. It’s easy when you’re sat at home in the dry watching it to see what you would do differently. But when you’re actually out there in the elements doing it, it’s a whole different ball game.
IKEA, on a budget!
You'll be guaranteed great food options and candles. I would love to see what your 'outside the box thinking' would get you! 😂
Thanks for another excellent adventure Mike.❤
xD i can imagine he'd buy the biggest shelf available just for the cardboard alone to build a shelter
could build a lil ikea fort though 🤔 that be pretty fun
Love this idea, IKEA has so many things in it I bet you could have a lot of fun doing a woodland IKEA challenge :)
I've only just realized you have over 2 million subscribers now! Been watching you for many years Mike, well done you truly deserve your success.
cheers!
I think it is fair when doing challenges, that if the shopping places don't have food then you should bring some anyway. It is a for fun kinda thing so why not bring a good meal and cook it! I enjoy the different challenges to see just how creative people can be. Thanks for sharing. :)
Here in my part of the USA, home improvement stores do carry bottled water, sports drinks and food like chips, meat sticks, candy bars, and the like, usually up near the checkouts. I've even seen hotdog & coffee bars. They know that contractors like my husband make supply runs on their "lunch hour" and having something they can grab saves them a stop.
The B&Q near me has vending machines for snacks near the checkouts. But you're gonna end up eating absolute trash for dinner!
I have seen similar here in the UK, but I don't think it is at all common - it certainly hasn't been in my experience. Which makes sense as usually less than 2 mins away on foot you will find a supermarket, coffee shop, probably at least one fast food and maybe even a real sit down for lunch time place... The only ones I've ever seen anything like that at were for the UK rather more isolated.
Why limit the challenge to just the one specialty store when there are most likely stores with food very nearby? How about picking the store you are going to focus on and then setting a radius of, say, a 3 minute walk from that store and you are allowed to shop anywhere else within that radius to round out your supplies? Seems to me this would come closer to mimicking a real emergency or survival scenario. Maybe chose a place you don't know well, verify that there is a shop of your focus kind there, but don't research the surrounding business before going.
@@Bridgercraft True!
@@josephinegibbs3902it's not meant to mimic real life. It's just a fun experiment
The bubblewrap pillow would definitely have been my top layer of the bed and possibly a 'sleeping bag, but I'm delicate 😂
Same.
I had easily enough lofty material underneath me for comfort, and I was dry from the plastic bag and laundry bag. That bubble wrap pillow was perfect! 😂
@@TAOutdoorsI was surprised when it started raining. That you didn't cover your leafy bed with All that plastic. But I am monday morning quarterbacking so.... Fun video though
Hey Mike, Be _very_ careful using metal plated stuff to cook on unless you _know_ it's safe. Some platings like chrome can poison (and even kill) you.
that aside, It was lots of fun!
Galvanised steel has gives off toxic zinc fumes and lead when welding it.
Not nice
Yep I was surprised that he didn't know this. I've never been camping and that cheap metal with chrome plating that is sure to come off when heated is the first thing I thought of. I was waiting to see him cook on it.
I have to admit when I clicked on this video, I thought the title was "BBQ Survival Challenge".
Think that would be more Thriving then Surviving 😅
me too lol
Samesies
I was also confused for a moment...
I did too
14:00 Here's a tip from a handyman. Instead of trying to rip open that little bag like you were, grab one of the nails inside and bend it up into the plastic. Poke a hole using the point of the nail, and slide it out that way. I've done it many times with both nails and screws, and you can slide the nails out the same hole, or back in.
Very Cozy, Willjum would be proud.
Hit the nail point on a hard surface to blunt the end - wood less likely to split... Works on tree stump beds or skirting boards!
Next - the 'Premier Inn challenge' 😂
Nice tip! Going to try that out. Premier Inn is a proper challenge 😅
Went camping last night. Got swallowed by fog in the early hours and woke up to everything soaked with condensation. Safe to say it was good times 😅 i can imagine it was fair cold in there mind. Yet another banger vid btw. Thanks dude.
I love the foggy mornings. Plenty of that now at this time of year as the temperatures start to drop!
As someone who works for B&q this is brilliant
Great job! 😎👍🏾 Get to know the abundance of trees in the area your in. Often you can use a tree's bark to boil up into a broth. Using a knife, cut 4in off the top of your sock, use it as a strainer😉 handheld stapler and bubblewrap go well together, nails not so much, but you made it work.😎 When you know you're going into the bush, try to keep 4 of those emergency foil blankets in your pack. They're great for lining your floor bed (leaves down 1st, then blanket) and making a top cover blanket. For top cover, just staple or duct tape to 4 long sticks. The other 2 non-used emergency blankets are for backup.😉 Last but not least, any structure you build or bring, to shelter you, find a branch that's as thick as your fist. Go back to your tent/shelter. Using the branch, put it up against tent, pushing into the ground hard, walking backwards away from tent about 6-8ft, you're making a trench in the soil. Do this all around the tent/shelter. Doing this is like roof gutters for your home. Rainfall drains away from tent/shelter keeping you optimally dry with no waking up in a puddle of cold water. We all know how THAT starts your day off😝🤣🤪😎👍🏾
When I first seen the shelter first thing that comes to mind was I'll huff and I'll puff and I'll blow your house down from the old Fairy Tail. You really enjoy what you do keep it up. I've never forgotten necessity is the mother of invention
@TAOutdoors try folding the top of your laundry basket down and it should make it more rigid. Same with a 1 tonne aggregate bag 👍
Nothing like a "Green House" for a tent.😄
Well done!👍✌️🇬🇧
Mebbe try A B&M challenge Next, They have a good selection, of out doorsie stuff, kitchen wares, food, I mean heck you could grab a packet of 5 thin Paint tarps and make a shelter from that, or grab a roll of wheelie bin liners and make a poly tunnel stealth shelter :P
Sports direct next? Stitch the bags for life together with a swiss army knife to make a tarp, also get slippers and a badminton racket for the thumb nail 😂
Fair play to you Mike for sticking that night out, great video as always, IKEA challenge next?
Cool idea using the bubble wrap plus the light reflection it provided. I was thinking you could use the clear plastic painters drop cloths. They come in rolls that are all different sizes and very cheap.
They would make a good bed liner also
I recall the LBE, and I appreciate the simplicity and diversity that it provided. Thank you for the great reminder. God bless you and your family.
That you can create a seamless connection between your B&Q sponsorship and your survival stuff . . . brilliant!👏👏👏
Sponsorship? they didn’t sponsor me on this one. If they did I would have stated. I paid £86 for the items 😅
That was fun! Here in the states, some of the Bushcrafters have done a camping challeges using Thrift Shop/Salvation Army Store/Used Item Resale store for their gear. The Sal Army stores in my town, even have food from time to time.
That was fun. Thanks Mike!
Charity shop survival challenge!
a valuable lesson to always pitch your rain shelter first! before doing anything else. you never know when the weather will change
Nicely done Mike! Here in the US we call it bubble wrap too. Hope your girls are healthy, the missus still loves you, and your mum and dad are well. God bless!
Should have wrapped yourself up in the surplus bubblewrap, it's surprisingly insulating and warm.
So, if you ever have to do this, start from the bottom up with your siding/roofing overlap the piece above the prior piece a good two inches, this way it will keep wind out and shed water all the way down like shingles
That's what I thought at first, but then Mike mentioned he was running short of nails.
@@RichWoods23 must have missed that. However he still got all the siding on. I think he would have still made it.
I'm loving these budget challenges plz do more
Haha the Cooking rack you bought reminded me of when me and my mates went wild camping. We went to Aldi to buy food and the metal storage racks were falling to pieces so I nicked the side of it. Still doing us strong to cook over the fire!
I know I have nothing on you and have the utmost respect for you, Mike.
And just a tiny tip without trying to tell you that you are doing something wrong.
When hammering in stakes/posts/anything with a hammer or whatever, hold the post with an underhand grip instead of overhand.
That way, if you miss, you will push your hand away. With the overhand grip you tend to tighten the grip if you hit your hand.
I learned it from an old farmer and I really like the technique.
Thanks for yet another awesome video :)
A really awesome build, camp and challenge. Yes, a fun video. Yeah, that bubblewrap will be useful for reuse as packaging. I saw a comment on a "thriftstore challenge" (Salvos or St Vincents, etc), now that could be fascinating. 👍
Probably best that you didn't have food to cook on the shower shelf. It's likely that the metals used in it aren't food safe. Made to not rust in the shower.
I doubt it was galvanized, but many of the rust resistant metal coats they do offgas when heated. Not just zinc
I use a similar knife for making walking sticks etc. You can literally "peel" branches with it! Set the blade on the branch, pull it towards you. Do not lift the blade. Keep it in constant contact. With a little practice, everything you make will be baby smooth! Also you'll have endless kindling! It's super easy!
That tent looks really cosy 👍
Great video, my first of yours. It gave me an idea of something to do with my son and his friends. 5 gallon bucket of random stuff that could be in a trunk of a car and it breaks down.
That's great Mike. More of this challenge with some other DIY store.
I wouldn't use that bubble wrap for any international shipping, it might get stopped for potentially containing seeds (which are very difficult to ship internationally due to regulations).
That was a bit of fun. Bubble wrap good for inside a greenhouse as a liner. Thank you so much for the video and good luck to you
Always to watch your video!
Full love from Quebec ♥
This was a fun challenge, brings the imagination to a shelter build as well.
Yet another use for bubble wrap. Thanks 🔪🎸
Thank you, Mike.
Great job, video. Thanks.
Those are my favorite kind of videos. Keep 'em coming!
Looked cosy in the bubblewrap green house
Well in case of the apocalypse, the stuff you brought is more likely to be available. And the people who invented that material do indeed own the name and call it that. Great insulation and cushioning .Fun episode!
Thank you for sharing ✌️💞🤟
Love all you do Mike, keep it up please!!!
This was fun! The bubble wrap shelter could stand for months! Lots of insulation in those bubbles. Naturally, we would hope we had stocked some 'add hot water' food bags.
looks quite cozy that Mike. Good stuff sir. Imagine the moon shining through. That would be amazing
Love it 😂 thanks Mike ❣️
If you want nails not to split the wood, turn the nail upside down, tap the pointy end once with your hammer or back of the hatchet, which will blunt the point of the nail. This way, when you bang the nail into the wood, the end will smash through the wood fibres, rather than work between them and split the wood. I always tap my nails first.
My local B&Q used to have a coffee shop/café until covid and they've not reopened it since, but there are a couple of snack machines at the entrance.
I liked this it was fun to watch and nice to see what you can do with cheep, lightweight gear
This is such good content! And I love b&q mate
The only food or drink I have ever seen in b&q is snacks at the checkouts.
Great job, still very enjoyable to watch!
in pre hospital care we use bubble wrap basically as a blanket, so my heart sunk a little when you used it for a pillow, I would, if I had emough had one layer underneath and on over me like a blanket, any left you could have used like a wrap with leaves in the middle for insulation and padding, alternatively the plastic bag around the bubble wrap could have been a pillow with leave in it for padding too. you live and learn thats why diy shop challenge get contractor bags, zip ties, cordage a big tarp and your doing pretty good :P
Can definitely tell you are a father now good video.
I appreciate your innovative ideas. We must work accordingly❤❤
Amazing!! U are a great inspiration for me! 🍀
Wonderfull
Such a great video. I'm enjoy to watch 👏👏
Well done pal
You showed how to use minimal gear to survive at least 24 hrs in the woods , great video
I think bubble wrap is pretty universal. Lol. Great job!
Love the video and the concept.
Good fun, man! Your videos are always a pleasure to watch.
Nice
Good one, enjoyed this. Love the thinking out of the box re that shelf for cooking. Take care 🌸
Probably nothing but at 23:21 when he talks about the lights it sounds like a quiet laugh can be heard, great video though!
Cheap ! isn't always nasty. .The bubble wrap could also be used as a blanket. I enjoyed watching . Light hearted bit of fun.
Love this and these kind of videos, that's what got me subbed! keep it up 😁
Awesome as always dude...the encroaching darker nights though...can feel it coming in quick
In the United States, in the Classic Camping era, Nesmuck always took nails or tacks with him to secure his tarps. He drew the nails when he was done with a campsite and used them again. Your shelter, with its light wood frame, makes the case for the somewhat forgotten tacks.
The hatchet would be improved massively by scraping the varnish off it and applying some BLO. Slick varnish is atrocious to hold on to when your hands get sweaty or wet.
Yeah it was pretty lethal once the rain got it wet.
I still have nightmares about the "crunchy-strawberry-water-pasta" and I didn't even have to eat it! 😅
This little escapade was a light hearted bit of fun...and there is absolutely nothing wrong with that.👍
Looks good to me.
I love poundland! Great place!
Great video! i Love watching your videos. love all of the different shelters that you build. Awesome looking shelter. :)
Classic British weather, rain that comes from no where.
Exactly that!
Nice vid dude, i think the laundry bags are made that way so you can throw them in the wash, a plastic or wooden hoop would be a decent design that slides in and out i guess.
A successful survival. The only things missing were a grilled steak and a couple of pints! All-in-all a fun video. Stay safe and cheers!
We really enjoyed your challenge your right it was a great bit of fun, my little boy suggested making a bubble wrap "sleeping bag" to keep warm! Keep up the good work and thank you.
A hint to prevent the nails from splitting the wood turn the nail point up on a surface and hit the point a couple of times to dull the point. Sounds counterintuitive but it works great.
The release of this episode actually proved rather timely: here in Central Texas, after a 3-month long heat wave, the rain finally came back tonight in BUCKETS!
Meanwhile, the B&Q reminds me outwardly of America's "Home Depot" franchise, right down to the paint scheme. And while they may not have stocked food, if the two stores are anything alike, B&Q must be in the middle of a strip mall surrounded by fast-food restaurants and/or grocery outlets, so something might still be had . . . ?
He could have, but the purpose of the challenge as I get it was to get everything from B&Q. Remember he said he was "cheating" by bringing his own water.
I'm in Dallas, and the rain was much welcome, but the lower temps were even more so.
@@DonP_is_lostagain I was trying to be funny…..🙄
"Nothing goes to waste" That was your old man talking right there that was :)
That be a pruning /grafting knife.
I think you would find grafting interesting.. whether it's bud or root-stock grafting.
Nice video Mike 👍👏👍. At least you got unflavored water 😂this time 😉
Like you making a compost pile..lol. Great thinking you will have a very thick ...well mattress.
9:00 Fold back the "ears" of the bag. It will stabilize it, and you won't hit them with the items you put in :)
The B&Q challenge can possibly give some ideas to a rough sleeper to dry and warm. It may only to someone in a park or green spaces with basic tools they may get hold of.
Don't know how much it would have cost, but a staple gun for the bubble wrap might have worked, too. Wouldn't have split the framing, and to hold down bubble wrap, a staple would have been enough.
