An elderly Canadian gentleman told me many years ago that spending a sunny afternoon in a park in Vienna listening to Strauss was one of the best days of his life.

Inconceivable that a fellow human being could have thought of these compositions from feeling... How wonderfully genius these pieces are! I wish more people can appreciate it. A couple of years ago I visited Vienna for NewYears Eve and they were playing the Fledermaus at the opera house, and it was broadcasted outside on a huge screen as well, where hundreds of people watched and listened in the cold night. It was an amazing experience.
What a lovely experience! I wish I could experience something like that! Never even been out of the US except to Niagara Falls, Canada.
My husband played the persona muta in Die Fledermaus and every time I listen to the overture now it brings back amazing memories

One of my all time favorite composers. To me, his music is like all the colors of the rainbow. Rich, flavorful, delicious, decadent dessert all rolled up into one.
Strauss' music is so beautiful, joyful and rapturous. He not only wrote music for his generation but for all generations ad infinitum.

It's hard to believe that when these beautiful pieces were written that they were actually "Dance Hall" music. Little did the Austrian population realize that they were hearing yet another genius whose music would go on to be some the greatest in the world. VIVA JOHANN! VIVA MOZART, BEETHOVEN, BRUCKNER, BACH, VERDI, ROSSINI, BELLINI, etc. Bravo to the Austrians, the Germans, the Italians, the French, the Norwegians, the Hungarian, the Swedes, the Czechs, the British, the Americans and the multitude of other nationalities whose composers have contributed to the wonderful Art we call Classical Music.
Also a big THANK YOU to the multiple thousands of people through the years who devoted their lives to developing their skills to play and sing these wonderful works.

This man was truly inspired by GOD to create these masterpieces for all the world to hear that they may bring joy to the soul. Heaven and Earth shall pass away but these will not. They will be with us in the next life for all eternity. They truly are gifts from GOD.

I love listening to this music and letting a story form in my mind. I'm a cartoonist, so in my mind the story was a cartoon story, sort of early disney-esq for the first song. It was a cat in a nice house who got distracted by a loose feather and was chasing it around but couldn't catch it. Eventually it went out the window and down the street, through a park, landing on ship which brought the cat to Euorpe, through a parade, into a subway, into a factory, into a mansion during a 1700's style ballroom dance - the cat would come close to catching it sometimes but something always blew it away. I know this story has been told before but it's fun listening to this music and letting the story form in your imagnation...I love getting carried away with things like this :)

Years and years ago when I worked at Sing Sing Prison I occasionally would take the commuter train down into Manhattan and just wander taking in the sights. One time I happened to wander to the edge of Central Park and the Skating rink at Rockefeller Center where I watched people skating but especially an older woman figure skating in tights as the Blue Danube Waltz played on the PA system. That woman skating with such fluid movements with that song playing hit me as to just how relaxing that scene was. After that I bought some CD's of Strauss Waltzes and to this day 35 years later I still love to pop on a video such as this to have it playing in the background on wireless speakers out on my patio as I eat lunch at the picnic table and recall the memory of watching that woman skating.

Plenty of old, quaint, coffee shops with killer Dobos(h) tortas etc. to nibble on with ur tea /coffee right where lots of great thinkers, composers, and authors put their talented best on paper too.

The roughly circular Ringstrasse goes in a ring around the old city with amazing buildings, including the huge ornate opera house in view as you pass. Many Viennese speak English, and not a few with more knowledge and articulation than many in the U.S. It is reasonably affordable with great history. I would return there in preference to Berlin, Paris, or Barcelona - which of course are all must-visit cities. I just find it more manageable. Barcelona, partically Gaudi's buildings and parks, should be on everyone's list and of course Paris already is. Berlin is great and unique in many ways, and home to a thriving creative art scene - just for ease of living I preferred Vienna.
