As a music and sound producer, I would suggest Sidechain-ing your audio (As we call the music producers call it), which is essentially to limit the signal to only output once it is above a certain threshold of db (decibel). This is a great thing to use to avoid all the noise in your audio between every time you speak. Most video and music (DAW) software got such solutions included, It is just the matter of understanding the software you use :)

Would you recommend a preamp, or a device like Zoom H6? I'm completely new to sound and trying to figure out how to get great audio for my channel. Still haven't decided on a camera, because all the DSLRs have like 30 minute runtime, which sounds like a nightmare.

Always find your tips super helpful Sean. I'm on limited budget so filming with iPhone and tiny plugin rode mic, natural light only.
Filming environment is challenging - there can be regular traffic noise that the mic picks up from most rooms in my house (unfortunately also the rooms with the best natural light) and I find myself trying not to speak too loud because I film when the baby sleeps. On days where it's just not working I'll try to make it work with voiceovers instead.
But really pleased that I'm still able to get it done 👊 and I really feel like I'm improving with each subsequent video 😊🙌

Great video. For anybody who wants a sample, I switched to a Smartlav+ from Rode on my video this week, "The Future of the Channel." I like the sound a lot but costs about $80 USD. I record into a Tascam DR-05 ($100) and sync it up later with the video. I used to use the Aputure A.lav mic on all of the videos before that one and I like that mic too and it's only about $35 and sounds almost as good as the Smartlav+. I hope this helps.

Great Video. Most video we produce is done live even if it's just being recorded for TH-cam. So we use the DPA D:Fine headset microphones which are XLR. We then use a Scarlet 18i8 to convert XLR to USB and provide the phantom power. These are known to be the best microphones money can buy and they are used on broadcast and in hollywood movies. They are so good that we usually don't have to worry about post production or room noise.

My wife and I just used the Blue Yeti two days ago to finally get started on making a podcast. I'm in the process of editing it, and it's... pretty awesome lol it's worth it for podcast and voice over. I feel like quality wise alone, we're off to a great start. As for a set up, I got the idea for us to record in our walk in closet. Turns out all those hanging clothes were great for getting rid of echoes and giving us the quiet room we need to isolate our voices. It's great. We're just beginners, but I'm sure we could give you pointers if you're interested.

My latest trick is using the Boya with my old iPhone 4 and use the Apple Native "Voice Memos" software to record - it's great for voice overs OR you can keep that combo on the subject and use it as a virtual wireless mic if you sync the audio later. I also find the Boya actually sounds better than in this video if you can get out of a room that echos :)

Great video. You might want to add showing how to strip off on-camera audio and replace with better audio. A discussion of Mono vs Stereo audio might be nice. You might also have mentioned that bad audio will drive people away from a TH-cam channel but they would tolerate lower resolution video. This is because with TH-cam, we are often doing something else while 'watching'.

As for budget microphones I use a Comica CVM-V30 Lite shotgun style mic, it sells for less than $40 and does a good job!
I do most of my videos with it!

Thanks Sean, great video and tips as always! I'm so glad you mentioned that I could use my I Phone, because on one video recently, my sausuage making, I neglected to turn on my shotgun mic! Now I have a way to fix that problem. And I'm definitely going to buy a Yeti Blue so I can do direct voice overs as well. Really enjoy your educational videos.

Thanks for the information Sean! I have struggled a bit with this. I have a wireless lavaliere mic that I use when I do "talking head" videos but with my channel I have been doing alot more vlog style (I have a fitness channel geared towards Dads, if the channel name didn't give it away! lol). WIth the vlog style I definitely need to find some sort of simple shotgun mic that can attach to an iphone because I have terrible audio when I do vlogs. Thanks again for the info!
