have you heard of Robert Rodriguez making his first feature for 7k in the 90s and then eventually, with enough meetings and deals, making 2million from the box office?
Not only that, but I think he used about 3k in buying the film itself since it wasn't digital he was filming on so he would have to continuously buy roll after roll.

I have and use Boya by-m1 lavalier mic. As you mention the cable is ridiculously long. It is very rare that I use this length. However besides trying to keep this thing untangled I have used it as a makeshift boom mic and believe it or not it has worked quite well hanging just out of the shot off a boom pole. Thanks for sharing. I love your content. - Will

  • @DayakDreams
    @DayakDreams 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

I know it's been three years, But I'm gonna comment anyway. This is about the Boya M1 Mic. There's a way to prevent your tangled cord issues. In fact, this works on any long cord from mics to clothes irons. Don't wind it up-fold it in halves. In other words, fold that long cable in half, fold in half again, and again, and again, and optionally again. Use a hair scrunchy to secure it, get the small ones, and use them like you would rubber bands. I guarantee you you won't spend more than 10 seconds unraveling the cord. And the little hair scrunchies outlast rubberbands 10 to 1. Do the same for the other shorter Boya cable. I actually made a little video of how to do it. BTW I love your video. Quick, concise, and no BS to sift through.

Nice review! I use a kit from Movo. What I like is that it comes with 2 lavs and one receiver. The receiver has a headphone jack, and the spin lock to mount it on my DSLR. I’ve used it camera mounted as well as on my Zoom H4N. Nice padded carrying case is a huge plus as well. For me, having the ability to mic 2 folks with a single receiver is huge. Keep rockin D, I truly appreciate what you do for the community. Cheers.

🎤 *Great review Darious IV!* 🎙️ I own an expensive digital-wireless Shure lav and was looking for a cheap wired lav to be able to shove in my pocket/bag without concern and after buying-and-returning several I've discovered the *Pyle-Pro PLM3 for $10 on Amazon* the sound quality is amazing for the price point, nearly as good as my Shure! I suspect the reason the Pyle is MUCH better than all the other discount lavs that I have tried is that it is (or at least claims to be) a *uni-directional lav mic* so that reduces the ambient noise that most omni-directional mics pick up.

The Boya M1 was amazing in sound quality but DROVE ME ABSOLUTELY NUTS with the 20 foot cable, I was always wrapping it up and like you said it would always get tangled. I wish they made this with a shorter cable. Then bought a powerdewise with similar sound which was a little more pitchy and less bass than the Boya but I sold it because it would have terrible static and clipping if you moved at all.

Just when I was getting into audio, TH-cam pidgeon-holed me into thinking the ultimate mic I will ever need for any purpose was the Sanken COS-11D. You search for the best lav mic, then one video comes out. You watch that, and that's pretty much the only mic that shows up in your search when you keep searching for lav mic reviews. Bit the bullet thinking I can use this instead of a shotgun, boom, or a traditional lav. Probably my worst purchase ever. Not because it's a bad mic, but it's not a general purpose mic. Even as lav mic, the type of crispness is not fitting for most of my applications. I've learned a lot since then and bought at least a half dozen prosumer mic since then but I should have started out with the budgets as that $500 could have gone a long way.

Another great option is the PowerDeWise lav mic. I just picked one up for a quick and easy setup for my channel. I have a Sennheiser wireless setup and other mics but if I don't want the extra bulk and setup, it's nice to have a cheap lav mic that I can connect directly to my mirrorless camera or smartphone.

Quick question, if you're shooting an intimate scene with mainly static 1- or 2-shots, do you prefer lavs or honest-to-goodness boom mics hooked up to some preamps? What's your preference?

I have the boya... It sounds great!!! I am just afraid of the battery dying in the middle of a wedding or something... lol
Awesome Video!!! I'm kind of liking that aperture mic. Thanks

Alav mic is great I have been using for over a year. Just wish the cord was shorter!

I got the Boya BYM1 today, it took me nearly 10 minutes to shorten the cable which is the pain in the ass!

Interesting video! I'd like something about how to use the different kinds of mics available. Like, when would you go for a lav, would you re-record dialog for action scenes where you shout stuff over the entire set "move here" "now do this" whatever, or would you go with a directional mic there..? If a character is turning away from the camera, would you use a lav and by that means clean sound, even though realisticly the sound should be different by the very moment, the actor's turning away from the camera.. Stuff like that would be interesting. Just as a means of sharing opinions and experiences, not a guide/tutorial. Anyways. I enjoyed this one! Keep it up!

I had the Comica CVM D02 and I loved it. It didn't pick up much of rustle sound. Unfortunately it stilled working after 5 times max. Not sure why. At be it was dropped. Then I replaced it with Yelloway. But the sound is ok not as good as the Comica which I believed was discontinued. I think most of those Lapel mic get broken if dropped. Thanks

I personally use powerDeWise and it's amazing. It costs less and sounds great.
    Dude, you MUST check it.

Thanks for the review! I have that Boya and feel like it sounds good enough but that cable is ridiculously long. Not really needed at least in my world.

Too bad it can''t split one mic left and other mic right since the TRRS pin is: Ground, Mic, Right Speaker, Left Speaker.
There is only one channel for microphone / input. :(
Otherwise this would have been super handy.
I record using a Tascam DR-40 and love the fact that I can record 4 tracks (2 files ... each with 2 channels) at a time.
Still could be useful as a backup solution for interviews.

That mic has been my main mic for a few years. Recently replaced with some K&H wireless lavs.
The long cable was nice for my talking head videos (I'm a one man crew so no boom op) but going wireless is so much better.
For cable management, I used some of my flash feet (little plastic feet) to wrap the cable around and that works really well. I'm sure you could find something else to manage the cable.
Like you said, not built to last. I've had to replace it a couple of times as the wire gets damaged at the battery compartment. Sound quality is decent but the sibilance is a bit harsh.

Eric Lefebvre have you ever had a problem with the lav’s and your DR-40? I can’t seem to get audio from my purple panda to be picked up on my DR-40. How do you plug the mini jacks in?

Great timing, I am about to order a Lav mic!
One question, how does the phone works when the mic is plugged in, does it gets locked and give exclusive access to it so that nothing interferes?

I know it's late but your gonna want to go to your settings and turn off vibrations or noises when you get notifications on your phone.

I’m trying to find a mic that just uses the microphone and the pocket power-pac or something, but comes with a wireless USB adapter so that my audio records wirelessly onto my phone. Do these kinds of mics even exist?
