  • We had the distinct pleasure to be invited to video Mr. Al Notarione's gorgeous Pennsylvania & Westbrook HO scale layout. This layout has been published multiple times, most notably in Model Railroader twice- in the November 1982 and April 2002 issues. The April 2002 article has a very good color track plan. These are very good articles and highly recommended if you can obtain them.
Al's layout is straight DC. It does feature an operating signal system (both PRR Position Light and NYC/Erie Color Searchlight signals) and some automatic running so Al can sit back and watch the trains roll. Scenery is complete and the layout is very well detailed and everything is nicely weathered. It is one of those layouts that just "looks right".
In addition to the HO scale layout, Al has an O Gauge layout in another room. We show this layout as well- it is big, loud and fun!!
Many thanks to Al for taking the time to show us the layout and for his very generous hospitality.

I first saw the MR article on this layout back in the eighties. Wondered if this video was the same layout and the same builder. As soon as the video started I realized it was. And I thought 40 years of enjoyment. What a testimony to a good track plan and a well constructed layout. After the video I dug up thst old MR and John Armstrong's track planning book and compared both plans. Then I watched the video again. Everything very well done and loved comparing the video to the old photos. Thank you very much.

Thank you for featuring this railroad. First saw it in MR back in late 70s. Think trackplan originally based on John Armstrong. Glad to know still going strong. Good job sir.

Great picture show Mr Bennett. I’m familiar with your past experience as a photographer, and respect your ability and creativity building your dream layout. Mr Mark Schumacher said it politely, if not deprecatingly, referring to the audio quality of this video and I agree with the sentiment of his first words. When the star of the show is not you, we don’t want to turn up the volume so we can catch glimpses of what’s being said under your “ah huh ah huh, right, ah huh, right, right, ah huh. I’m lucky that I’m getting older (60) and I’m lucky that my hearing is great. The sharpness of pictures should not be excluded over the focus of sound when you create an audio visual experience. Please keep making the content that you do well and learn from this constructive criticism, as this is meant to be.

Yes, you are correct. I have purchased a set of wireless lapel microphones so both me and the host can be "wired" directly to the camera, and not rely on the in-camera microphone. Should provide much better audio! Will try it out on an upcoming layout tour we are doing next week (will be a good one-so stay tuned!)
