- David Hughes HO scale Western Maryland Railroad was featured in the April 2021 issue of Model Railroader magazine and was also on the cover. It features beautiful scenery, realistic operations and multiple helixes that are hidden. Real places are modeled thought the layout and capture the time period modeled with superb realism. Thank you Dave for hosting us! If you like what you see PLEASE SUBSCRIBE to the channel as it promotes it and there is NO cost to do so. To see other great model railroads I've visited go to My TH-cam channel home page then to MY PLAYLIST to Layout visits.
His wife is so talented to paint and blend the backdrop into the foreground.
Amazing 👏
An amazing tribute to a real railroad
Outstanding! They layout and the video 👍
I know the Western Mayland pretty well so I can attest that Mr. Hughs has captured the feeling of the place he's modeling better than most other modelers. I live in California now, but his depictions of the Eastern Appalachians gave me a small stab of homesickness, which is an unusual feeling for me.
Memories! My Mom was born and raised in Westminster, married and moved to MI. Back in the 70's (this layout's era 🙂), our family made the long road trip to Gramaw's in southern PA, then a side trip to visit friends who lived on Tank Rd, (Finksburg area) out in the country then. Us kids would walk down to the creek (which I now know as the N branch Patapsco River), and swim by the old WM trestle, roughly the bottom of the grade described at 15:00, about 1 mile east of Patapsco. I loved trains, and enjoyed watching for trains more than the swim, I think! Thanks for taking the care and faithfulness to detail to recreate this beautiful layout.
Sam: the location your remember swimming at, Patapsco, is on an eastbound downgrade, about halfway between Westminster and Cedarhurst (Finksburg, MD). At Cedarhurst the grade levels out, and immediately east of that point the grueling, twisting three-mile eastbound grade of 1.86% commences at Falls, up into Emory Grove. This three-mile stretch constituted the ruling grade into Baltimore from Hagerstown. Helpers were often required. When I was a kid I relished the pounding sound of multiple locomotives climbing up Falls Hill with a 100-car train.
Glad you enjoyed the video.
Great video of a great railroad
Incredible layout ... clean! And wow, the bathroom .... trains running through as I sit there :)
the passengers get a thrill- I remember my mom and aunt and I were riding the silverton -durango train and a man was fishing naked.
Insane😅. Totaly awesome layout. The trees and scenery is beautiful..👍💯💥
Wow! Having spent my first 20 years in Detour, I have countless fond memories of the WM. You gave captured the essence of what the Western Maryland was. As kids we played often on and around the bridge at Monocacy Crossing. You have a tremendous layout and one in which you can be very proud. Thanks for reviving a flood of memories!
Holy smokes ,incredible layout. Love the attention to detail
Absolutely beautiful. A work of art.
You could get lost on this amazing layout. What a way to go.
Spectacular!
When I was a kid my Aunt and Uncle had a house close to the track north of Glyndon in that era. I think my visits to them and watching the WM diesels go by got me hooked on the WM..
I’mm speechless. No words. Epic work. ❤
Thank you David for inviting me and Alex to video! your wonderful layout!
What a great layout! I love that he modeled "M.B. Klein" in downtown Baltimore. Spent many a $$ there feeding my train hobby!
Good catch, Russell!
If I had the money, and the space, this is exactly how I would spend my time. So jealous. Thanks for the tour. And by the way, your wife is also talented.
Holy cow. That’s gorgeous. I can’t fathom painting backdrops that blend into the foreground scenery so well. Beautiful work all around, and their first and only layout. Darned impressive!
I think my scenery is reasonably good but yours is truly realistic and something you can justly be proud of.
Spectacular!!!
Thanks for sharing this amazing video with us, Al.
Great pike and coverage. I'm a steam nut and known for rough, unkempt scenery, but after seeing this magnificent layout, I'm going to invade my cases of early diesels and fire up my scale power lawnmower. Then finally learn how to build decent structures. I'm a fan!!! After then, I'm going to install a rather large Christmas tree in the basement and run my trains around it. Al, you outdid yourself on this one. This is your finest ever and keep up the fine work. David, congrats on a truly great model railroad!!!! Wow!!!!
@@HowardZane thanks Howard I am glad you enjoyed it!
What an amazing Railroad, my favorite RR, the WM along with the B&O east of the Ohio River. Thank you all for sharing it.
A superb layout!
Beautiful layout!!! Love the eastern scenery❤
Beautiful
Wow! That is spectacular. The entire railroad is so well done.
As someone who lives in Hub City, I appreciate this layout. 👍🏻
Good stuff ,thanks Al.
Totally in awe of this excellently done video. And even more in awe of Dave's love and dedication to the =WM= Railway - as demonstrated in this fabulous layout. Well done, Sir!
What an amazing layout!!! This is one of the nicest I’ve seen in any scale. Thanks so much for sharing.
Agree! Best in any scale I’ve seen as well. Nicely done!
Beautiful train layout. Enjoy your Emory Grove. I spend many days watching the Baltimore local switching car with Maryland midland. Beautiful work. When I did move from Reisterstown. I may have the the train order sign on the of the tower. Still have it
Absolutely amazing, the detail is ,well, believable. What a Master.
From Italy.... so beautiful. Good wife😁
Thanks for sharing Al. What a great looking railroad.
This is just a purely amazing layout. No detail has been left out.
@kerraedge4006 Thanks stay tunned because I've got more insane layouts comming! If you want to see more go into my Playlist then layout visits
Wow! Absolutely amazing layout.
Wonderful layout David. Thanks Al for paying it a visit.
I started building my layout 61 years ago and it still is not quite finished. There have been some interference along the way at times caused by RC model aircraft.
gorgeous! very impressive
Nice showcase of a wonderful layout. Thanks for sharing.
That orchard is awesome!
Very nice Al, one of the best blended backdrops I’ve seen in a long time. Cool how he hid helix’s, well done.
WOW!!!!
Great railroad (as opposed to “a layout”). Nice to see using Caboose Industries switch stands is OK.
Allen: you are correct: they're "okay". Of course, they are way too large, out of scale. I experimented with the N-scale version, but found there wasn't enough travel in them for HO scale. I have weathered mine so they don't stand out like sore thumbs. The good news is that they are bulletproof. If I had it all to do over again I think I would would use the self-locking Peco turnouts. I simply wasn't aware of them when I started construction in 1999.
Thank you for the compliment.
@@davidhughes4448 A lot easier to install than switches- I use Peco turnouts with Caboose Ind throws
Wow! i grew up along the Dutch Line and my uncle worked for Suburban Propane in Woodensburg. This is incredible! In every location I feel like I have travelled back in time, and I am standing there in 1965 watching the train go by.
Outstanding!
Thanks for posting.
Very impressive layout. So many talented people in this great hobby. And I LOVE the EMD "F-7" units. 👉 32:48 I really enjoyed watching this video!
Beautiful work!
Al, I have been watching your videos and appreciate your sharing the numerous layouts you have visited. They are awe inspiring and
I feel as though they are a gift to us. You now have me as a subscriber !!! This layout by David Hughes is stunning !!!! Very clean, efficient,
& features some excellent modeling. My kind of layout as well as others you have featured on this channel. Keep 'em coming Al !!!!!!
@@coalcracker1655 thank you
Outstanding layout. Great tour, Al.
Damn that's some good stuff. Keep it up Al loven it.
Great layout!
Ive never wanted to use someone else's bathroom so bad before 🤣🤣
The helix is amazing, and love the superb rendition of Owens Creek...even the road is the period-accurate Rt 81 (not 550 as it is numbered today)
Thank you for noticing, sir.
I'm a nyc fan and this makes me wanna do my next project with nyc and western Maryland. I was going to do more santa fe but I'm super conflicted. I live in Texas now, all my 45 years spent in ny where my great grandpa was an engineer for the nyc, my grandpa the delaware & hudson and my father conrail/amtrack.
This is great 👍
Had me captivated the entire video. Thank you 👍
Fantastic layout. Funny I live not far from the area modeled but my dream is to model the D&RGW west of Grande Junction!
That this is David's first ever railroad build is what's most mind boggling! Wow doesn't even come close. Some of those locations are well known to me (I live near Westminster); I wonder whether he ever has any open days? I have so many questions I'd like to ask!
Steamfan007: Thank you for the kind words - much appreciated. I will be open for Mainline Hobby's layout tour days in September. You can find the dates on their webpage... I believe. I don't even know when it is yet!
Corn stalks are by JTT. I have had the privilege to see the layout evolve over the years. As you can see in the video the layout is fantastic! Dave I need to come over again and run some trains!
Thanks for this correction, Fred. I knew what I said was wrong the moment I said it! My failing brain...
@@davidhughes4448 Was not trying to embarrass you, just wanted the viewers to know which product you used for the corn field.
Thanks Fred we are children of the 🌽 and I had delicious sweet corn for dinner tonight
We did also! Corn was picked yesterday.
As a Western Maryland fan and modeler I'm, speechless! What a fantastically done layout. The carpet has me curious. Are the logos throw rugs or made into the entire carpet? How can I get some for my trainroom?
My first locomotive 🚂 is the AHM BL2 in Western Maryland number 82.It's now has a Proto Scale chassis. Can I have it run on Dave's layout? After all, the locomotive is still still alive in a railroad museum. 😅😅
What is the smallest radius of the mainline curves ?
Roland: 22", and all curves on the layout are superelevated, with eased approaches. And thank you for your flattering comment earlier.
@@davidhughes4448 I believe in giving credit where credit is due. My minimum is 22" also. That is only on one curve. The rest are 24". I used super elevation on the original hand laid and dog spiked track laid on individually cut 1/16 pine veneer ties, which is still in use after 61 years. My grade is 2 1/2 percent . I find that, with a long drag of 40 or more cars, the super elevation tends to shift the CG a little too far off the centreline of the track meaning that care needs to be taken coming into that uphill curve so that long and high cars such as 4 bay centre flow hoppers don't pull off towards the inside of the curve. There is no doubt that the super elevation looks prototypically great but on the extensions I opted for the flat curves. Roland
Greetings from Austria. Is there a track plan for illustration?
@@AlBorland22 I believe there is one in the Model Railroad magazine article done on his layout. I did not see one when filming
@@alpugliesetrains9753 Oh thank you. I think it could be in the April 2021 issue.
Excellent layout sr qa could ask him where did he get the clear signage he has in his display and rug thanks 😊 want to see so I can get it in NJ TRANSIT 🚇
