Great pike and coverage. I'm a steam nut and known for rough, unkempt scenery, but after seeing this magnificent layout, I'm going to invade my cases of early diesels and fire up my scale power lawnmower. Then finally learn how to build decent structures. I'm a fan!!! After then, I'm going to install a rather large Christmas tree in the basement and run my trains around it. Al, you outdid yourself on this one. This is your finest ever and keep up the fine work. David, congrats on a truly great model railroad!!!! Wow!!!!
If I had the money, and the space, this is exactly how I would spend my time. So jealous. Thanks for the tour. And by the way, your wife is also talented.
JUST ABSOLUTELY WOW!!! A SUPURB layout a MASTERCLASS craftsman! It takes so long but that level of exceptional detail just needs that time. ‘Perhaps Elon will build some robots specializing in this exacting, meticulous work.’ Massive, detailed layouts like this in 3 month!
Holy cow. That’s gorgeous. I can’t fathom painting backdrops that blend into the foreground scenery so well. Beautiful work all around, and their first and only layout. Darned impressive!
Absolutely incredible details, and a fabulous job his wife did on the backdrop. I too am a big fan of the WM, having grown up a few miles West of Cumberland. The Connellsville sub ran behind our house. I'm also working on modeling the WM but I have a long way to go to get anywhere near what David has accomplished here. Thanks, Al, for sharing this with us.
I know the Western Mayland pretty well so I can attest that Mr. Hughs has captured the feeling of the place he's modeling better than most other modelers. I live in California now, but his depictions of the Eastern Appalachians gave me a small stab of homesickness, which is an unusual feeling for me.
Totally in awe of this excellently done video. And even more in awe of Dave's love and dedication to the =WM= Railway - as demonstrated in this fabulous layout. Well done, Sir!
Wow! Having spent my first 20 years in Detour, I have countless fond memories of the WM. You gave captured the essence of what the Western Maryland was. As kids we played often on and around the bridge at Monocacy Crossing. You have a tremendous layout and one in which you can be very proud. Thanks for reviving a flood of memories!
I live in Maryland. Just south of Baltimore. I got my first train last year for my birthday, and I can't WAIT until I'm able to build a nice, permanent layout like this one.
I was expecting to see Cumberland, Frostburg, Grantsville, Oakland MD. Now that's Western Maryland! Nice layout but couldn't get excited about Hagerstown to Baltimore.
Dear Al and David, indeed a beautiful layout! Love the way the helices are either shaped into the layout, or made a scenic part of the layout with the small diorama vista. Beautiful how David’s wife did the backdrop painting. Love the angled lines that she has chosen, which is such a great way to prevent the otherwise awkward look when, for example, a road comes at 90° towards the backdrop and is prolonged on the 2D image as going fully straight into the distance. The ‘askew’ approach definitely adds to the field of depth and the illusion of perspective. Absolutely awesome and stunning! Cheerio
Memories! My Mom was born and raised in Westminster, married and moved to MI. Back in the 70's (this layout's era 🙂), our family made the long road trip to Gramaw's in southern PA, then a side trip to visit friends who lived on Tank Rd, (Finksburg area) out in the country then. Us kids would walk down to the creek (which I now know as the N branch Patapsco River), and swim by the old WM trestle, roughly the bottom of the grade described at 15:00, about 1 mile east of Patapsco. I loved trains, and enjoyed watching for trains more than the swim, I think! Thanks for taking the care and faithfulness to detail to recreate this beautiful layout.
Sam: the location your remember swimming at, Patapsco, is on an eastbound downgrade, about halfway between Westminster and Cedarhurst (Finksburg, MD). At Cedarhurst the grade levels out, and immediately east of that point the grueling, twisting three-mile eastbound grade of 1.86% commences at Falls, up into Emory Grove. This three-mile stretch constituted the ruling grade into Baltimore from Hagerstown. Helpers were often required. When I was a kid I relished the pounding sound of multiple locomotives climbing up Falls Hill with a 100-car train. Glad you enjoyed the video.
What a nice bloke! Yep, beautiful pike, absolutely. The room is straight out inviting, like you find a real hankerin' to be in there just hangin' out. Now, back to my trees....
Wow! i grew up along the Dutch Line and my uncle worked for Suburban Propane in Woodensburg. This is incredible! In every location I feel like I have travelled back in time, and I am standing there in 1965 watching the train go by.
Al, I have been watching your videos and appreciate your sharing the numerous layouts you have visited. They are awe inspiring and I feel as though they are a gift to us. You now have me as a subscriber !!! This layout by David Hughes is stunning !!!! Very clean, efficient, & features some excellent modeling. My kind of layout as well as others you have featured on this channel. Keep 'em coming Al !!!!!!
THIS IS A MUSEUMS QUALITY LAYOUT I WISH I COULD BUILD ONE LIKE THIS . ALEX, YOU ARE A VERY TALENTED ARTIST WHO HAS A GREAT TALENT . AWE INSPIRING PERSON.
Allen: you are correct: they're "okay". Of course, they are way too large, out of scale. I experimented with the N-scale version, but found there wasn't enough travel in them for HO scale. I have weathered mine so they don't stand out like sore thumbs. The good news is that they are bulletproof. If I had it all to do over again I think I would would use the self-locking Peco turnouts. I simply wasn't aware of them when I started construction in 1999. Thank you for the compliment.
Absolutely gorgeous layout. If I can EVER get anywhere near the detail and quality of model railroading as this layout or so many other breathtaking layouts in the model rail YT community I’d have to thank all the channels like yours that cover layouts that are absolutely amazing. Suprised I haven’t watched this before. I used to absolutely hate transitional era because it’s a bit over modeled but now my secondary industrial park layouts intentional late transition era design to run early gen diesel switchers and just overtime appreciating so many transition era layouts I’ve began to really enjoy them all. Thank you for the coverage of this layout! Just wow
Spectacular! When I was a kid my Aunt and Uncle had a house close to the track north of Glyndon in that era. I think my visits to them and watching the WM diesels go by got me hooked on the WM..
I started building my layout 61 years ago and it still is not quite finished. There have been some interference along the way at times caused by RC model aircraft.

Beautiful train layout. Enjoy your Emory Grove. I spend many days watching the Baltimore local switching car with Maryland midland. Beautiful work. When I did move from Reisterstown. I may have the the train order sign on the of the tower. Still have it
Corn stalks are by JTT. I have had the privilege to see the layout evolve over the years. As you can see in the video the layout is fantastic! Dave I need to come over again and run some trains!
I'm a nyc fan and this makes me wanna do my next project with nyc and western Maryland. I was going to do more santa fe but I'm super conflicted. I live in Texas now, all my 45 years spent in ny where my great grandpa was an engineer for the nyc, my grandpa the delaware & hudson and my father conrail/amtrack.
That this is David's first ever railroad build is what's most mind boggling! Wow doesn't even come close. Some of those locations are well known to me (I live near Westminster); I wonder whether he ever has any open days? I have so many questions I'd like to ask!

There truly are no words to describe or complement this amazing layout! Superb job, isn’t enough! A true work of art!
His wife is so talented to paint and blend the backdrop into the foreground.
Amazing 👏
Good wife..!!
First 3 minutes, It's gorgeous! The helix housing is so well done! Gotta go work, but will be back.
I've been to most of these places, years ago in the era being modeled. He has it absolutely correct. Now I wish we could go back to that time.
Very impressive layout. So many talented people in this great hobby. And I LOVE the EMD "F-7" units. 👉 32:48 I really enjoyed watching this video!

I think my scenery is reasonably good but yours is truly realistic and something you can justly be proud of.
As someone who lives in Hub City, I appreciate this layout. 👍🏻
