You should definitely see the live version of Red Rocks Colorado 1983, full of energy and passion in this amphitheater with burning fire. The whole concert is unique!!!

My favorite U2 song is "New Year's Day", which is on the same album as "Sunday Bloody Sunday". One of their most popular songs is "Pride in the Name of Love", which is about Martin Luther King. King's birthday is observed 10 days from now, so it would be a nice touch to react to that song then.
Silas should totally do "Pride in the Name of Love" on MLK day. January 15 That would be a very fitting tribute.
"U2 began their Joshua Tree Tour in Tempe, Arizona, where the governor was opposed to Martin Luther King Day being made a US federal holiday. By the time the band headed back to Tempe to close out the tour, they were receiving death threats for supporting the proposed holiday. Things took a serious turn before their gig at Sun Devil Stadium when someone claimed he would shoot Bono on stage if he sang the King-inspired song. Bono recalls in the band's book U2 by U2: "One night the FBI said: 'Look, it's quite serious. He says he has a ticket. He said he's armed. An he said if you sing 'Pride (In The Name Of Love),' he's going to shoot you.' So we played the show, the FBI were around, everyone was a little unnerved. You just didn't know, could he be in the building? Up in the rafters? On the roof? During 'Pride,' I was singing the third verse, 'Early morning April 4, a shot rings out in a Memphis sky.' I just closed my eyes and sang. And when I opened my eyes, Adam was standing in front of me.""

When this song was new, and the band were performing in Northern Ireland (where Bloody Sunday occurred) they were hesitant to do the song to a live crowd as it wasn't 'their struggle' but it was the struggle of those in the crowd. They decided to do it but with a caveat. Bono went onstage beforehand and said they had this song, and it was their (the audience's) song, not theirs (U2), and if the crowd didn't like it they could get up and walk out and the band would never play it again. Then, they played it and the audience went mad for it.
Any Irish can feel it's their struggle.. their Island nation was divided over it.
I'm very aware of the history.
I do not believe that Ireland is a 'nation' but rather a nation-state comprised of the Republic of Ireland (a sovereign country and part of the EU), and Northern Ireland, part of the United Kingdom.

One of my favorite U2 songs. From the rat-a-tat drums, to the Edge’s buzzsaw guitars to the glorious fiddle to the sobering lyrics and impassioned vocals. This banger has it all. Silas, I recommend you react to the entire War album.
So emotional, so strong, so rhythmic, so melodic. One of a kind.
There is an early live show of theirs from Red Rocks in Colorado, an amphitheatre literally set into the rocks. When they crank this up with the martial beat and he’s marching around with an enormous white flag, in the dying daylight and swirling red fog, the crowd about LOST it. Really powerful period of theirs IMO.
Man their first album Boy dropped and I was about 18 when I first heard it on the local College alternative station. And they were from Ireland and it just really grabbed our attention. And plus, the song I Will Follow just seems so raw and new for the time.
Sunday Bloody Sunday is from their third album which came out a couple years later and I think I was around 20, and wow. They were still just predominantly on College radio but this really started to open a lot of eyes and that album cover, we all own the album and you'd see it propped up somewhere and you just stare at it, it's mesmerizing.
It's so amazing to think that they went from that to be a huge mainstream act over the next several years. It's a great story.
Their performance of this at Red Rocks is a must-watch.
Those were terrible times in Ireland, such a beautiful country. They seem to have healed the wounds and moved on. Northern Ireland is even tallying absit rejoining the rest of the country. This is great because it's such a beautiful place with wonderful people. If they can do it, the rest of us can too.
A great related reaction about the violence in Northern Ireland would be Zombie by the Cranberries, doing the music video instead of the lyric video though for sure as it makes the song 10x more powerful.

I'd definitely suggest checkin next New Years Day. There's an extended version. One of their best songs, and honestly, they have so so many fantastic songs. But New Year's Day is a must hear.
Hard to believe it is now 41 years old. My fave U2 song.
The IRA. Look em up. The Irish Republican Army. I remember this stuff. Northern Ireland, the British Army… Sunday Bloody Sunday. This song gives me chills. U2 is a band from Ireland. They have a guitarist known as The Edge, hence you will hear some cool stuff. But seriously, Silas, look up the history of the conflict. You won’t believe how the IRA worked. Great historical song.☮️💟
The IRA were formed in the late 60`s to protect the Catholic population in the North Of Ireland from being burned out of their homes by Loyalists. I believe it is true to say that without British occupation in Ireland there would have been no IRA. The violence that ensued all started by Britains illegal occupation of Ireland. Tiocfaidh Ar Lá.
Known in Ireland as The Troubles from the late 60’s to the late 90’s. Lots of bloody battles and indiscriminate killings during that time between Protestants and Catholics. U2 has always been a band that used their platform to speak about many societal ills.

This song from Rattle and Hum... it is a live version that will really put the meaning into perspective. Trust me.. watch this even on your own. Insane live performance.
It's simple and it influenced so much music coming after it, and it was also a bit indicative of what was new at the time, but that hi hat pattern with the snare in this situation feels so raw, and to me it always struck me like this...
That snare is stuttering out its intermittent staccato of brutal violence, and the beat is relentless and never stops.
It supports everything so perfectly despite its seeming simplicity.

You cover Meat Loaf and U2 in the same week!!!! Those are my two all-time favorites. You are spoiling me! The anniversary of Meat Loaf's death is January 20th, it would be great if you did another Meat Loaf song on that day. ("Paradise by the Dashboard Light" or "I'd Do Anything for Love" would probably be the best next step)

Live at Red Rocks of this is great as is the version from their movie Rattle and Hum. In the latter you get to see, in real time, the reason so many Irish of the boomer generation get so emotional about past events. Ireland has changed a lot but it's threatening to go back to the way it used to be.
Another song on this subject that you might be interested is is "Zombie" by the Irish group the Cranberries.

My mother is U2s biggest fan. As a result, my first concert was U2, at Tampa Stadium in 1987 (The Joshua Tree tour). They were a proper rock band then 👍

One remarkable album or mini album (as it was shorter than normal), which came out in the early days (1983) of U2 was 'Live Under a Blood Red Sky'. It includes in it's 8 tracks, 'SBS!' and 'New Years Day', which are still, IMO, two of their best songs. Also 'Gloria', Party Girl' and '40'. Thanks Silas, cheers ✌
If you want an understanding of U2’s anger behind this song, watch the Rattle and Hum live version. Recorded at a US concert on a day of an IRA attack in Ireland. Bono’s vocal and the band’s rage is something to behold.

Absolutely! I've seen them live twice now and I can't think of anyone better in concert, including Bruce Springsteen and he's incredible live (also gives really long concerts!). Just saw U2 in Vegas at the Sphere in December and it was indescribably.@@reactionfan1448
Shortly after this, they did a live album, that, actually sounds better. When i play these songs, i play the live versions. Usually, live albums dont sound as good as studio. In this case, the mixes are way better live
U2 is way better live in all cases I think, or at least most. There are some great music videos for some songs, but generally, live they are the ones to beat.
Silas always has such great energy and seems like a really cool dude. Great reactions brother!! I’ve been a huge U2 fan since the early 80’s and two of their best albums are War and October (early U2). Most people know them from The Joshua Tree but check out those first 2 albums to get a real feel of raw U2.

The live version from Rattle & Hum is incredibly powerful - the day after an IRA terrorist attack in Northern Ireland. Bono's impassioned "F**K the Revolution" speech during the song gives you the chills.

It was not only the IRA who were involved in "The Troubles" There was also the UDA or Ulster Defence Association from Northern Ireland who were anti IRA. Both sides were involved in some terrible doings. This song was against both parties to end the violence. To this day there are still problems in the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland. Catholic and Protestant clashes still happen but not like it was back when this was written. The problem still burns in the spirits of the people of both Ireland and Northern Ireland.
worth pointing out that on the Sunday in question, it was British Troops that killed unarmed civil rights protesters

and the actual bloody sunday massacre was carried by british soldiers on civil rights marchers,and british forces were colluding with pro british loyalist killers.
I believe the BBC pulled the plug on Live Aid during this performance. The Red Rocks live version is better. Bono actually helped broker peace in Northern Ireland. Before your time. Just guitar, effects, bass and drums.

They played Sunday Bloody Sunday, but couldn’t play Pride because of the very extended version of Bad 😅
