Rattle & Hum is by far their most underrated album. They caught a lot of shit for trying to sound "too American", etc. but this album is full of absolutely great original songs.

    • @Wolverines77
      @Wolverines77 ปีที่แล้ว

No such thing as an "underrated" U2 album... I think... No, I know you meant to say "underappreciated"...

    • @bminturn

@@Wolverines77 no it was underrated. This album was trashed by the critics. I used the term that I meant to use.

That album and Joshua Tree were when they were at their peak. About the time Bono flew his hat on a first class seat from LA to London after leaving it there.

Great reaction man. Hey if you want to get a taste of how we first heard them, they had these two albums War, and, Boy. And while they turned into a magnificent band later that you could hear on mainstream radio, in those early days when we first noticed them coming out of Ireland amidst a lot of violence, you would just hear it on the College radio station. And I went out and bought the records and they came through and I saw them in a really small venue. It's definitely more strident and less polished but that same emotion and energy is more raw there I would say. They came from a pretty conflicted environment if you read about the conflict going on in Ireland around that time. But a great entry point they're in one of their first huge progressive radio hits was Sunday Bloody Sunday, referring to a historic incident there

This is the end track from a special album Rattle'n'Hum that U2 recorded during their epic 1987/88 US hit tour Joshua Tree; They wanted to "discover" US music, recorded songs with Bob Dylan and B.B.King, and dedicated a song to the fantastic US soul singer Billy Holiday. Both albums reflect US music and culture.
Tip: watch the video/DVD Slane Castle 2001 with the song pack All I Want Is You-Where The Streets Have No Name (both songs flow into each other) to get an impression of U2 live concerts.👍

Great review . U2 and emotion go hand in hand . No band has pushed emotion in music the way u2 do
    Try these songs
    One
Sometimes you can’t make it on your own
    Kite
    Stay faraway so close
    Bad
Where the streets have no name
Still haven’t found what I’m looking for
Stuck in a moment and can’t get out of it

The studio version is great but you should check out the version at the live aid concert, the visuals and what happened will explain why. Also , look at sunday bloody sunday, one, pride, the streets have no name,... The list of great songs by them is long and worthy of a deep dive👍🇨🇦🥴

If you've liked "With or Without You" and "All I Want Is You", I really think you'll love "One" off of the Achtung Baby album.
For their more political songs and harder sounds, I would recommend "Bullet the Blue Sky" and "Sunday Bloody Sunday" to start.
Then, I would start listening to some of these songs live. A cool video idea would be to hear the studio album version of the song followed immediately by the live version and seeing your reaction to both and which you prefer ❤❤

    • @zedge527
      @zedge527 ปีที่แล้ว

Can I suggest that, particularly for the political songs, you should look up what the song is about before listening to it? I think that would enhance your enjoyment of the song when you finally hear it.

  • @kelsosemail

Bro, first of all, I love your videos so far. This is a REACTION channel.
As much as you've been powerfully impacted by U2... you gotta watch Rattle & Hum, man!
They BLEW! UP! with The Joshua Tree in 1987. BLEW!! TF!! UP!! How on earth would they follow that up?!
Dude... they made A MOVIE! Went on this exploration of American music and recorded the whole thing! So, you get that... AND you get cool concert footage of Joshua Tree tracks.
It wasn't a "level-up" from Joshua Tree... that came with their next album, an absolute MASTERPIECE, "Achtung, Baby!" But it's a fascinating record of one of the biggest bands OF ALL TIME at a crucial time in their development.
Rattle & Hum. In the age of everything streaming, it can't be hard to find.

it’s so relieving seeing someone closer to my age (21) having this kind of reaction to them; I feel like our generation has grown up with u2 as a band to make fun of, but them and coldplay were the soundtracks of my childhood. not enough people even give them a chance especially after the whole apple thing. some of their songs, including this one (hell this whole era), are nothing short of a religious experience to listen to and it makes me so sad that i never got to see them live during this time

You should check out the music video for this song. Circus on a beach theme. Mainly in black & white. Peter Dinklage (pre-GOT) as one of the main characters in a story about unrequited love. I play that video every New Years Eve, just before I turn in. Last track on 'Rattle & Hum'.

All kinds of string instruments in here. Probably a chamber string ensemble with violins, violas, violoncellos and double basses.
The prominent haunting stuff was, I think, played by a group of (violon)cellos.
"All I Want Is You" (1988) is my favourite U2 song. Goosebumps indeed.
"October" (from 1981) is (still) my favourite album. Part of their, say, 'post-punk' period.
    Versatile band.
    Very worthwhile investigating.
