There was no "Rattle & Hum" tour. Rattle and Hum was the name of the movie that documented U2's 1987Joshua Tree tour. It was a line from the song Bullet The Blue Sky (🎵"In the locust wind, comes a rattle and hum..."🎵)
Lovetown tour followed the release of Rattle of Hum so there kinda was a Rattle and Hum tour.
A bit like there was no Pulse tour by Pink Floyd. Try telling people that and they get weird.
Ive watched the Rattle and Hum movie at least a few dozen times since it came out. One of the best concert films ever released. You really must do the song Bad from the Rattle and Hum film. It remains for me one of, if not their best song ever and the Rattle and Hum version of Bad is their best, with them slipping into snippets of the Stones' Sympathy For The Devil and Ruby Tuesday at the end is just so amazing!

Most of this was filmed at the old McNichols arena (since torn down) in Denver. A show I dearly wish I hadn't skipped. Another famous concert video of them was filmed at the legendary Red Rocks Amphitheater (Under a Blood Red Sky), which is also an epic show. Missed that one too sadly.
One of my life's greatest regrets were all the amazing shows I've skipped, either because of work or costs (more in the last 10 years than in the old days). If I could have a re-do, I'd have called in or found a new job so many times!! LOL.
I have a reaction for you. It's funny and it's country and it's got a lot of banjo in it name of the artist is Loudon Wainwright. The name of the song is dead skunk. It's hilarious.

I finally did get to see U2 live, because of work...lol. I was a medic at the show at Mile High Stadium, the Zooropa tour. I've always maintained they were better live than in studio.@@DocRock71
Between the four members, they grew under a mix of Christian and Catholicism. Bono in particular had parents under each. In their early years the band almost called it quits due to what was perceived as a conflict between the religious sect some of the U2 members were in versus their Rock and Roll. This was up until around the second album. They left the sect, and have since not aligned with any religion in particular. You can see it in their music and writing. They had abandoned specific religions before Sunday Bloody Sunday was written. That does not however, mean that their spiritual beliefs were abandoned. For them, probably quite to the contrary.
That sounds like you're saying Catholics aren't Christian. They'd probably say they're the only (true) Christians 😊 , in reality they're just another sect of it.
The version of In the Name of Love from Rattle and Hum is great too, up tempo and the place is rocking. When the crowd joins in on the chorus near the end it’s incredible

This performance of this song.......to me, it's pure frustration, pure anger, pure unwillingness to accept the status quo,. It all comes through. Brilliant choice to react to.
I would argue that the 90's and Achtung Baby is their highest creative point and is the album celebrated at the Sphere - some great songs there including "One" but "Bad" (unforgettable Fire) is the quintessential U2 song and the performance on Rattle & Hum is glorious. Also "Where the Streets Have No Name".
I was extremely privileged to hearthe full version of his speech, in this. I've worked in audio for many years and a friend did FOH on this gig and had a recording of it. In this video it's really edited down. There's a whole section about American giving money to the IRA. He doesn't hold back as they think they're paying for "The revolution" but they're paying for people to do acts of terrorism.
I grew up in London and it was a regular thing to have to dodge bombs and bomb threats from the IRA.
The performance of Silver and Gold on this tour is mesmerising…
You should listen to "Zombie" by the Cranberries. It is also about the war in Ireland. The video is very moving.

I was backstage at the Joshua Tree Tour in Tempe Arizona, Got to watch the whole concert from right in front of the Stage. They were awesome. One of my fave groups I was entranced by this album. Bono has one of the bets voices in rock and roll ever a passionate political song writer too.

1987 in Dublin is probably one of their most passionate performances.
The Enniskillen (poppy day memorial service) massacre:
Eleven people were killed, including three married couples. The dead were Wesley and Bertha Armstrong (aged 62 and 55), Kit and Jessie Johnston (aged 71 and 62), William and Agnes Mullan (aged 74 and 73), John Megaw (67), Alberta Quinton (72), Marie Wilson (20), Samuel Gault (49) and Edward Armstrong (52). Edward Armstrong was a serving RUC officer and Gault had recently left the force. Gordon Wilson, whose daughter Marie died in the blast and who was himself injured, went on to become a peace campaigner and member of Seanad Éireann. The twelfth fatality, Ronnie Hill, died after spending 13 years in a coma (aged almost 69). Sixty-three people were injured, including thirteen children, some of them permanently. Ulster Unionist politicians Sammy Foster and Jim Dixon were among the crowd; the latter received extensive head injuries but recovered A local businessman captured the immediate aftermath of the bombing on video camera. His footage, showing the effects of the bombing, was broadcast on international television. All the victims were Protestant.
A few hours after the blast, the IRA called a radio station and said it had abandoned a 150-pound (68 kg) bomb in Tullyhommon, 20 miles (32 km) away, after it failed to detonate. That morning, a Remembrance Sunday parade (which included many members of the Boys' and Girls' Brigades) had unwittingly gathered near the Tullyhommon bomb
The song is about the killing of thirteen civilians (26 shot in total), during a civil rights march on 30th January 1972 in Derry , Ireland, by British paras.

There are different live versions and I love the variety; it always has to do with where the song is placed in the concert. The R&H version has a long acoustic intro and impressive speech, so the song "falls apart" a bit.
The Red Rocks/Chicago 1983 is brilliant, with drums straight away, as is the Live Aid version in 1985, with the subsequent song Bad being legendary - really worth seeing.
From R&H, of course, the song package Bullet The Blue Sky + Running To Stand Still (two so different musically and in terms of content, but the transition is fantastic), as well as One Three Hill (a roadie's death by a motorcycle accident in NZ) are further highlights and of course Pride. Have fun with all kinds of good music!!!

Dudes, you both spoke over the very parts - in the intro speech and the monologue in the middle, where he was expressing disgust at the bombing of a remembrance day parade in Ireland that very day, which is what made the performance so raw. Pause when you're talking and you'll get more is all I'm saying. ✌️
The way I understand it, the reason for leaving this song off of the live playlist for about 10 years was a bit of an audience/fans response to that performance. The Edge played it himself on a date on the PopMart tour, which I've seen a video of once.

ONE TREE HILL is one Underrated Gem you NEVER hear about but is THE Best Song in the Joshua Tree Album.

All I can say is, the 80s rock was the best rock music produced!

This is certainly a powerful statement and probably the favorite of most people for this song. My favorite live version is a much quieter more poignant presentation with Edge doing the vocals with a very quiet guitar. To me it conveys the sorrow of the conflict, which resonates with me as a mother.

It's just 🤯 what people can do in the their perverted view of some God.
The U2 fandom is VERY split over their favorite eras. Many feel the best were the early 80s was their best, which included Sunday Bloody Sunday. Others feel Later 80s is tops. Many more see the 90s as THE highpoint, and still others came in later loving the 2000s as their favorite. It can easily be argued theater there are at least 4 distinct eras of the band, perhaps more. This is one of the many reasons why I love them.
John Lennon wrote an angry song about the same tragic event, in Derry, Northern Ireland in January 1972, with the identical title, but is a different song.
U2 ahhhhhh..........so many good songs, but you might like this one, lyrics, U2 songs from back 80's to me was about the lyrics, War album have so much songs, but the best album is The Joshua Tree all songs, all. Oh, btw, search U2 version of U2 - Unchained Melody, to me, is the best one.

One of U2's most overtly political songs, its lyrics describe the horror felt by an observer of the Troubles in Northern Ireland, mainly focusing on the 1972 Bloody Sunday incident in Derry where British troops shot and killed unarmed civil rights protesters.
When U2 started, the first were a band called The Hype, and then Feedback. At that time, they almost became a Christian Rock band. But the bassist said he'd quit, so they didn't go go that route. While Bono was raised and heavily influenced by Christianity, like your brother-in-law said, he leaned more Pacifist.
They move the high hats way down in the mix even in a lot of the live versions of the song. Not here 🤣
After this outburst towards the IRA it got Bono in a lot of bother back in Ireland.
Once the wider Irish public got wind of the film, Joanou ( rattle and hum director )claims that the responses came in as expected. “There were public death threats made by the IRA against Bono and his family. There were rumors that Bono was specifically on an IRA death list. That haunted them for a couple of years afterwards, and they had to ramp up security.”
They have definitely talked about being Christian but I don't know if that has changed over the years.

They were raised Catholic but are more world, love, sharing type of humanism than a specific set of dogma. Anything that didn't make sense, they cut out.
Rattle and Hum was U2's last really great album. They peaked with The Joshua Tree, but RaH is very good also. Like your Bro in law, i much prefer 70's/80's U2. Thats not to say i dont like anything else since, but they tried to much to diverse. But still one of the greatest bands live.
To attempt to answer your query re whether they're Christian: from hearing him speaking on issues of faith and Christ, I'd describe Bono as having a more Catholic faith. Edge and Larry, I'd imagine, have some semblence of faith too and I'm unsure re Adam. They've never (to my knowledge) been described as, or purported to be, a Christian band.
