Xenoblade Chronicles Definitive Edition and the Art Of A Perfect Story

  • Xenoblade DE (Definitive edition) manages to tell a story in a way that felt pretty unique and does not really show it's whole hand until the very end of the game making the lore feel super thought out and allowing for an insane amount of plot twists . It's an impressive game and i hope i have not spoiled the game , with the final boss fight or anything , for anyone wanting to play it but at-least there was a disclaimer at the start ^-^
This video was made with intent to explore what DE does to make the climax work .Sorry if it felt a little too explain-y but it had to be walked through to show the progression of how the world view completely changes as the game goes on .
    Thanks for watching !

One of the coolest foreshadows in the game was at the beginning,
Before shulk and reyn left on their journey ,shulk talked about how he had 2 voices in his head. One telling him to be a reasonable young man , and the other being "Kill the robot people". This can be interpreted as zanza acting his plans out really early on in the story as something like this happened at the when shulk had the chance to kill egil

Takahashi (the Director) loves to present information that makes no sense and goes unexplained only to mindfuck the players 50 hours into the game. The writers load like 100 Chekhov’s guns at once and start releasing them just as the players interest begins to wane. It’s creates so much tension and intrigue: the payoff is brilliant. One detail that I really love about the story is Zanza who is giving Shulk the visions, always uses plots 1 and 2 to get shulk to do plot 3. Zanza wants Shulk to go to Prision Island to free his body so he teases that Metal Face will be there and that he will be able to destroy him. Zanza wants Shulk to destroy Egil so Zanza gives a vision that Fioria will be in galahad fortress because Egil is there and it will lead to Shulk getting more motivation to destroy Egil. But once inside of the Mechonis, Zanza stops giving Shulk visions because Shulk is already on the path of defeating Egil so he doesn’t need to point him anywhere because Shulk is going to do it on his own.

Just discovered this video on my recommended yesterday, and I have to say that I largely enjoy it. You definitely nailed as to why Xenoblade Chronicles is a game and now series that became so revered even by its somewhat niche audience.
And as much as I love XC1’s story, zi definitely agree with you XC2’s story is great one its own right as well, and it’s sad to see plenty of hardcore XC1 stans trash simply due to its slow opening, along with standing in the first game’s shadow. I’ll admit, the twists and foreshadowing aren’t as mind-blowing 3D-chess like as in XC1, but the late game twists of how it’s connected to XC1 still entirely blew my mind, and even fixed some of my problems with XC1 as well. Being that it makes Zanza more than just a one-dimensional villain (since as much as the story goes apeshiet after he emerges, it sadly traded Egil for a much weaker villain) and explained Alvis’s character a lot better than the end of XC1 did. XC2 does have its flaws, don’t get me wrong, especially when it comes to the voice direction at times and some intrusive gacha elements, but I went from being lukewarm on the game to putting 215 on it and Torna combined. And definitely don’t regret.👌🏽
So tl;dr, while XC1’s story deserve its praise, which’s why I clicked on this video why I got it in my recommended, I’m just glad to see you give XC2 its due props rather than throwing it away just because “anime tiddy bad.”

Are you sure that “hardcore XC1 stans trash it simply due to its slow opening”? Are you aware of the fact that people that haven’t even played XC1 also tend to have major criticisms against XC2? A big portion of Xenoblade 2’s story can be ruined for you with just one simple question; why? You wanna see how?
Why did Tora save Rex and Nia? To him, they were just some random criminals fighting back against being arrested by the Flamebringer herself. What reason could he possibly have for saving these two strangers? The “best” answer we get is that he just “doesn’t like those mean bullies.” That’s no reason to attack a high-ranking military member, take them to your house, and then show them your super secret multi generational family project. Good thing he didn’t meet Theory and Praxis before Rex and Nia. He’d be dead if he had.
Why did Rex trust Pyra after Morag told him that she killed two Titans, and probably tens of thousands of people? He even looks back to her to see her reaction, and she’s looking down in shame not even trying to deny it. I can understand why Rex wouldn’t let Pyra be arrested during this. Rex’s point that Morag could just be trying to use her as a weapon is very valid. That’s what militaries do. However, one would expect Rex to have a lot of questions for Pyra after the fight, right? So what follows this fight? ...the generic bonfire scene where the fire flares up for no reason, Pyra calls it beautiful, and Rex says “the fire is beautiful because you made it, Pyra!” ...even though the only reason Rex even wanted to go to Elysium was to save people from the dying Titans, Rex doesn’t even ask Pyra about the fact that she killed two Titans and probably tons of people as well. It’s not that he doesn’t believe that Pyra did this. It’s not that he feels uncomfortable asking her this. It’s not that he just simply has rose-tinted glasses from his crush to her. This situation with the death of two life-sustaining Titans is WAY too important for any of those situations to be a legitimate factor. No well-written character capable of speech is stupid enough to ignore a red flag that massive. It’s that the writers just didn’t care. The writers wanted a scene where Rex defended Pyra unconditionally, so they included it. They didn’t want to deal with the repercussions of that scene, so they DIDN’T include it. It’s that simple.
Why does the game act as if the Blades fighting for their Drivers is some sort of “Cowardly” act? The game never gives a satisfying answer for why the Blades aren’t the ones always fighting, and only the villains ever use their Blades like this. Dughall flat-out states that if the Blade dies it’ll regenerate, while if he dies the Blade will effectively also die because of the loss of its memories. He’s 100% correct. This statement makes perfect sense. What are our hero’s rebuttals? They call him a coward for putting his technically immortal Blade in harm’s way before they beat him up. They didn’t even try to give a good reason for why he would be wrong. Blades are canonically stronger than their Drivers since they’re choosing to share SOME of their powers with them, and if the Driver dies the Blade also effectively dies by the loss of their memories. Drivers have a great reason to stay out of fights, and Blades have a better reason to fight, but the game never directly tells us why they don’t do just that. It gets close, but chickens out. In a Heart-to-Heart with Tora, he flat-out states that Poppi would be a better fighter than he is if he programmed her to be one. What is Nia’s response? At first she’s impressed, but then she says some bullcrap about how “Poppi shouldn’t have to fight alone.” That’s it. The scene ends after this. That didn’t even made sense, as Poppi would presumably still be a part of the team. They acknowledged the fact that this Blade system is stupid, then essentially said that it’s mean to even consider “putting Blades in harm’s way.” Bullcrap.
The story of XC2, while it has its moments, is mostly garbage up until the last third or so. It gets much, MUCH better later, but even then it takes a long while. I didn’t even go hardcore on the spoilers here. Two of these three questions happen near the beginning of the game, and the other one is just never answered. The rest of the game is FULL of “Why?”s that ruin the story like this.

My friend and I were talking about the use of foreshadowing in this game, and he brought up the point that you could tell which side was the actual antagonist from the opening cutscene. You know, the one where Bionis and Mechonis are fighting?
Basically, what would you do (in a setting where both parties had swords) if somebody walked up and started attacking you? Would you attack back, or play more defensively?
That can be applied to this cutscene. Judging by movement and posture, it doesn't take much to see that Bionis is clearly the attacker. This is also reinforced throughout the entire game, really, *especially* once the Mechonis arc begins.

as resident xenoblade chronicles nerd the only things I think you might have gotten wrong were lorithea being kallian's mother and zanza's soul inhabiting arglas in prison island. zanza's soul was sealed inside the monado and moved to lay dormant inside shulk as a child when the monado was found on valak mountain. Arglas was just essentially zanza's flesh since he had been posessed during the fight with the mechonis and held some of his will if I recall correctly. good video though. 10/10

I was trying to pin it down but didn't quite know how, your 3 narratives explanation is perfect! The way this game made me feel when I finished it is unmatched. As it was throwing all those punches at me at the end, so many previous scenes with dialogue that didn't make sense at the time just hit me. It excels at foreshadowing and setting characters and arcs up. All JRPGs have grandeur concepts like this, but very few can bring it full circle like this and stretch for so long without boring me tbh. Definitely my game of the year.

Why does Klaus look like Shulk? I get that Zanza used shulks body to reside and that is why he looks like that when he first appears or is it that zanza always looked like that. When Zanza says that shulk was chosen because “he happened to be there at the time,” then why would klaus someone who lived before look just like him. Zanza would’ve to make shulk appear that way to resemble himself. To me, it seems the game just makes it a coincidence that they look similar, klaus and shulk, instead of Zanza saying shulk was designed by him to look that way. Idk, maybe I missed something

Now if only the whole Zanza plot was way more subtle, this game would actually be perfect if they straight up didn't show like Alvis and Lorithia CLEARLY plotting bad shit in some scenes and Alvis straight talking to Zanza with his own equally obvious replies. Dickson too, "I feel bad deceiving these kids" and everytime he's spying on them for "no clear reason" You could figure out Egil isn't the last boss by the time you're done with prison island and alcamoth, and that's before you even properly meet Egil too. The way they presented the plot twists in this game felt like the writers just kept going "SIKE! That thing we just explained earlier... well, that's not exactly how it went. It actually goes like this instead!" And they do it like 8 times to the point where it felt like the story spiraled out of control. It felt like the writers were just trying to shove in plot twists for the fun of it. The Dickson plot twists was predictable, as well as some of the mechonis stuff. It's the classic, "the bad guys aren't really bad guys" thing. I liked the game a lot. But man, it felt like fan fiction by the end of it.

a thing i always found funny is that a lot of people don't seem to realize that zanza is the soul of the bionis... at least not until the mechonis core.
the game gives people plenty of hints that the giant you see is just a shell.
it all becomes pretty clear once you get to learn about meyneth.
    she is:
    1. a soul stuck in fioras body
    2. the soul of the mechonis
3 said mutiple times that she faced/confronted the bionis and confronted zanza (literally saying that yes he is the bionis)
plus there are more direct hints from zanza:
    1. mutiple cutscenes show the monado being wielded by the bionis and zanza
    2. zanza tells reyn that it morphs to the will of it's master (this explains how the small monado could be wielded by the bionis. he still says that he wielded it tho.)
    3. he literally says that he used it to defeat mechonis (we still get cutscenes with him and the bionis swinging the sword. a few times zanza and bionis together at the same time.)
    4. the memory cutscene in agniritha shows the bionis getting hit and then jump to zanza screaming in pain.
all clear hints that he is like meyneth, but so far i have maybe seen two people early on discover that he is the soul of the bionis while everyone else has this OH moment right when they literally say he is in the mechonis core.
the game is really great at setting this sort of stuff up. like how lorethia and alvis work for zanza.
alvis is a bit more obvious because of that one "i could have easly stood in for you" cutscene on top of prison island, but both lorethia and dickson have some hints that they are working directly for zanza as well.(which are not really all that clear on the first playthrough.) most of them are around the prison island and sword valley cutscenes.

I love stories that build up their hero to be some super badass special chosen one who was born to be the hero and save the world, and then at the exact moment they were meant to complete their purpose, they get knocked off their high horse, discovering they werent special at all, they were just dumb and lucky to get their special ability therefore their victory can no longer be garunteed as if it were predetermined destiny, forcing them to realize how powerless and human they are. Then xenoblade took the extra step of just killing its MC and droping the atomic bomb of plot twists that shulk wasnt even really a person with true free will, but a corpse being puppeted by a malevolent god who made all the decisions leading up to this point for him. And then the game takes another step past that and hits you with the fat fucking uno reverse card when you find out the gods themselves are no more special than that hero, since they were just normal ass humans lucky to find themselves the conduit (retconed in 2 to further enhance this point) and become gods. So when shulk awakens the true monado he gains his own true unique personhood in which he can actually act on his own free will to seize his destiny, claiming Zanza's place in the universe and remaking it without gods to break the cycle of manipulation he experienced firsthand alongside Arglas and Egil. The way it loops in on itself makes replaying the game infinitely enjoyable and is the reason im on my 5th playthrough right now going for 100% and why ive watched several other people's blind playthroughs and lets plays because whether im experiencing the game for the 3rd 4th or 5th time, or getting to see someone else go through this roller coaster for the first time or even repeat time where they get to notice the foreshadowing they were at first oblivious to, it just never gets old.

I don't think it's perfect, now that I played after 8 years it made me realize it is, in fact, just nostalgia talking, I like all Xenoblade games equally, and Xenoblade 1 story is really not that great in my opinion, but it's not bad. The execution is really good unlike Xenoblade X story which picked up in the final chapter only. Xenoblade 2 has great story and characters all well balanced, and Torna too. Xenoblade 1 has problems keeping things interesting, and some characters in your party are just for show, like Riki that it's... just there, and Sharla that only knows one word.

Obviously it is hypothetical, but given the situation in Xenoblade 2, we already know that Zanza's soul has been fragmeted across universes, so it is likely that it was just fragmented even more in the XC1 universe itself. Given that Zanza was described to have sustained Shulk's life though, it is explained that he was with Shulk ever since the Monado expedition and that he gained his life force back when Meyneth sacrificed herself, implying that she gave him the rest of her life force.

There are a few reasons why I vastly prefer 1 over 2. One major reason is that i feel that 1 is more consistent in tone than 2, 1 doesn’t really have very many comedic scenes or anime tropey scenes, there is the scene of riki’s introduction but that’s much less than 2 which from memory I can think of things like gramp’s death fakeout, the introduction of poppi, zeke before he joined the party and the tirkins being chef's instead of assassins. these arent exactly bad scenes and if they were in another game but because it was xenoblade i had expectations of a certain tone that wasnt there. the plot iself also didnt really catch me the same way that xc1 did, i didnt really care for the characters or their goals so i wasn't that engaged with their goals. There are also more minor complaints like the voice acting being worse but this mostly falls on rex rather than the rest. i wont deny that nostalgia is a part of why i prefer the first game but i guess my expectations were too high
