The most annoying thing about the coverage of this situation is that so many people think it would be impossible for Shohei not to be aware of the situation. No body knows the truth yet, but like you pointed out there are dozens of ways he could have been in the dark and taken advantage of. Even if he approved of money transfers, it doesn't mean he knew it was going to a bookie.
Yeah he had a close relationship with Ippei, he easily could’ve assumed the money was going to something different and didn’t want to pry. He wouldn’t be the first guy taken advantage of
Ohtani is a sports athlete, they leave that to their accountant, agent or a close associate, for Shohei it was Ippei, they knew each other since he was 19 years old (and when he came to the states he knew no one except Ippei and gave him complete trust) And player's making over hundred million dollars with money coming in and out, while he is toally focused on his game and training, no one will notice if that athlete loses a fraction or pocket change to what he is making.
@trevorcarey3997 Yeah, I'm almost positive he didn't open his bank account at least once a day like some people. I'm willing to bet, he had his translator doing everything related to money and his translator gave him papers to sign off and told him a lie. With how much he trusted his translator. It's most probable

Love all your videos Trevor, seeing someone who has played in the show as long as you did and getting to hear about all these behind the scene elements of the game is awesome! And what else is awesome? Chocolate chip cookies, now if only I had a good recipe for them? 🤔
One thing that argues against Shohei having a gambling habit is the huge deferment of his contract money: if he loved betting, and was in the habit of betting in the tens of thousands or millions, he'd want to have more ready access to his massive money pile, one would think. Deferring such a massive portion of his contract suggests he knows he could live happily for the next decade with much less.
Knowing everything I know about Shohei (his humility, traditional Japanese values, not caring about making money etc...) ain't no fuckin WAY he knew and its a shame his names even attached to this considering he's the literal goat.
He has never showed interests and actually has declined to gamble when he was introduced. He wholeheartedly trusted Ippei. He didn't care about money. If you dig into this case more, you can tell who's suspicious.
I’ve just gotten into baseball as my son started playing and being in australia it’s not a very popular sport. Love your videos Trevor! Wish I got into the sport sooner
I think it's wild how The Dodgers managed to get yet another high dollar record breaking pitcher who got caught up in a scandal that caused them to get suspended.
Except shohei hasn't and more than likely will not be suspended. And there was also proof that bauer did do it especially when he's literally admitted to it. The only debate with bauer is the consent and circumstances surrounding it not the actual actions.
I first heard the news and figured Ippei was the fall guy. Then I saw that stuff Friedman, and that actually made a lot of sense. I still wouldn't be surprised if this comes back on Ohtani though. I'm always on the lookout for a good chocolate chip cookie recipe.
Thanks for your input, Trevor. Well said, and also with comic relief which in this case is as delicious as chocolate chip cookies. Also, I *highly* recommend the written translation of Ohtani's conference that a user posted to Reddit. It provides a more nuanced level of accuracy which helps clarify some things, and imho it also indirectly sheds some light onto the incompetency of the Dodgers communications team
The Trevor made baseball channel rocks, harder than any other. it’s like baking good chocolate chip cookies and having the chance also eat them of course if you don’t have a gluten problem like I do.
Interpreters can have even more leverage to betray trust in this kind of situation compared to an assistant because they're able to directly control a lot of information via translation without anyone being the wiser.
When playing for NPB, Shohei's mother put gave him a $1,000 a month budget, and at the end of the year, he still had money saved up. If he was a gambler, there is no way he would have been able to live off that budget. Also, when his Angels teammates went to the casino and invited him to go with them, he declined and told them that gambling is not good and asked them why they would waste their money like that. And this is the person that so many cynical people think Shohei is a gambling addict.
Dude cmon I love chocolate chip cookies so much and I really can’t get good ones anymore if I don’t make it myself after leaving the US. Recipe please!
