  • As another Atlantic storm begins to batter Britain, the World's Largest Container Ship OOCL United Kingdom prepares to departs Felixstowe Berth 9.
    The Met Office had issued a yellow weather warning for a 24 hours period for high winds which covered much of England and Wales. With the sun glittering on the choppy water, you could feel a noticeable presence of a storm brewing in the harbour. The South Westerly wind had been steadily increasing over the morning to a brisk 25-28 knots with stronger winds expected.
    The Harwich Haven pilot had ordered three tugs for departure with a fourth on standby just incase the British weather throws an unexpected punch. The 3 tugs leave the pontoon and head to Berth 9 where they find out where to make fast. 3212 tug Svitzer Kent slips between the bow of the Magleby Maersk and the stern of the OOCL United Kingdom to make fast centre lead aft. 2411 tug Svitzer Sky makes fast starboard quarter and the 3212 tug Svitzer Deben goes under the bow to pick up the heaving line for the centre lead forward.
    The first of the 10 lines each end were slackened and winched back onboard leaving springs still tensioned on the bollards. The last of the lines were slackened and bought back onboard. Steadily the tugs increase their power to pull the OOCL United Kingdom away from the berth into the channel.
    Once inside the channel Sky and Deben were released as the United Kingdom comes ahead on the main engine. Deben peels off onto the Harwich side and positions off the port quarter. Approaching the 90 degree Beach End turn out of the harbour, Svitzer Kent goes out for a powered indirect to help the OOCL around the corner.

    I am just amazed at how strong those little tugboats really are. Wonder how long this took in real time. And thank you so much for putting all the info in your description box, most folks don’t.

      From making the tugs fast, letting go and rounding the corner it can take 30 minutes to 90 minutes depending on weather conditions and if there is an unexpected breakdown. The bigger tugs are over 8,000bhp with the smaller ones about 7,000bhp.

      The tugs are assisted by the ship's own bow thrusters, operated from the bridge wings either by the Pilot whilst being monitored by the Captain, or by the Captain under the direction of the Pilot (the Captain has ultimate responsibility for the ship's safe operation, even if the Pilot makes a mistake).

    Impressive, then you realize that likely one small personal aliexpress order is somwhere hidden in a corner of one of the containers of such a vessel and they don't have a problem getting it at your doorstep without too much hassle. I really appreciate the logistic processes that are behind those giant haulers.

    This blows my mind whenever I watch it. (I know absolutely nothing about shipping and/or tug boats.) The coordination of the tugs, the ship's skipper and/or harbor pilot in order to manage the movement of such a massive Goliath seems impossible. (I think the tug positions appeared at the beginning of this video.) I am literally watching the impossible get done. I could see one of the tugs really bearing down -- using a lot of power -- almost to the point of it taking on water. All this topped by a stiff wind no less. It must be great to have a front row seat and take a ride in one of the tugs, but it's probably not allowed.

      The tug is performing a dangerous manoeuvre call powered indirect. It helps the ship turn around the sharp corner without the stern from over steering and grounding.

    • @johndean4998
      @johndean4998 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The containers are loaded to below the waterline, where the ship also has water ballast tanks to trim the hull and increase its stability. Nevertheless, when you consider that these vessels have no shaped keel in the conventional sense and are effectively flat-bottomed, they represent remarkable feats of engineering.

    • @2e1paw
      @2e1paw 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I personally have worked on the ship .... heavier boxs start at the lower decks and usually get lighter as they go up , the top say 4 or 5 are empty boxes so most of the weight is at the bottom....( STACK WEIGHTS) they most also be loaded equally either side to prevent listing.

    Strong winds? Look at the smoke from the tugs, the flags and the lack of breakup on the water surface. That's about a force 4 - 5.

    • @deanocable
      @deanocable  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      With the amount of containers on top deck, they act like a sail and causes the tugs to work harder toget her moving and bring her off the berth.
