    "French ivory" IS celluloid! 😄
    I've just watched a historians video about the vintage plastics, especially celluloid and he said, that "French ivory" was the marketing term that celluloid objects were often sold under. The invention of celluloid is actually a result of the search for a replacement for ivory, because there weren't enough elephants to sustainably satisfy the demands of production. Also: celluloid itself is transparent, too. It was colored. Otherwise celluloid film couldn't have been used for fotography and cinematography.
    There are no wild elefants in France!🙃

    8:24 your video is great right away I just want to let you know that I love it, and I love your demonstration and breaking down video, but I have a carved yellow orange, kind of a more of a orangey tone, but not completely pumpkin kind of like a butter scotch Ambre anyway what I want to know is how can I tell if it’s not plastic?

    I would love another video on Bakelite. I struggle with it, I can identify more easily on the silverware, but as far as the jewelry I struggle, and I know I missed out on some awesome pieces. I’d like to know more about Shultz? 🤗

    It is said leather loses its scent after 60 years... Perhaps celluloid loses its camphor scent after a long period. Just guessing at that.

    Mirror back is celluloid

  • @MrQuarksy
    @MrQuarksy 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Nice work. Regarding the hand mirror, it seems you were told it is French Ivory. The term "French Ivory" refers to an imitation ivory, and is not actually ivory. This faux ivory is made from celluloid. It could not be REAL ivory because the back is far wider / bigger than any slice of elephant tusk could ever be. Thus in my view, you have celluloid.

    • @luckysweetheartvintage476
      @luckysweetheartvintage476  4 ปีที่แล้ว

  • @skylarmickel

    Great video. I don't think you're probably pearly carved bracelet is Bakelite I have never seen pearly Bakelite. It might be a different kind of plastic that they used formaldehyde to make though.

    7:01 OK can you clarify on that mirror? I have similar items like that and you’re saying it’s called French Ivory, the same ivory that comes from an elephant 🐘 or no?

  • @suzannedawson6330
    @suzannedawson6330 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I'm confused… the Lucite items appear transparent rather than translucent. Translucent is semi-transparent. More foggy but almost see through.

  • @sofalvarez
    @sofalvarez 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    So lucite is basically acrylic?

    NOT COMPLETELY synthetic White Asbestos IN Bakelite
    “ Important NOTE 📝 is that Bakelite was the first company to manufacture plastic from phenol resin and formaldehyde in 1907. However, vintage Bakelite telephones contain up to 5% amosite asbestos, which can become very dangerous if it is disturbed.” Just sayin 🤷🏼‍♀️
