I have a 1997 Cherokee 4x4 so this was an EXACT and amazing tutorial. I never felt like I was waiting on info. I feel confidant, I can handle this job, it will just take 10x as long as it does you. I have done engines, power steering gear box, Dana 44 rear, and transfer cases, this is the next step for me. You are a true professional.
Holy smokes, I will never question again or even flinch at the cost of a automatic transmission. That was amazing and truly We were all watching a master at work, your confidence and depth of knowledge is priceless.
Behold, a master at his craft. Your absolute comfort while you tear down a transmission is impressive, as is your knowledge of the generations of transmissions in Toyota (and other) vehicles. You sir will always have work!
Hiram is amazing to watch.... I've been blessed to learn so much from him! I'm working on this trans now. With each one I do, it does seem to get easier. ...
Hiram, thanks for these videos. You are very helpful and informative. It’s clear you are a master of your craft. Keep it up and much health and happiness to you and family
And now ladies and gentlemen you see why it costs so much to have your transmission rebuilt. And he didn’t even show you what it takes to remove and install it... 👍 Great vid. ;)
I had an A4LD transmission rebuilt in my 1988 Ford Bronco 2. Cost $2400 to have it removed, rebuilt, and reinstalled. Shifts a lot better than it ever did before and they beefed up some of the internals to make it hold up far better than before.
I like the new intro. Keep going with that. That Jeep servo cover is huge. Excellent teardown. I don't know how you can keep all that stuff organized and know where every little piece goes back in. Blows my mind. Love watching your videos. You're a true professional.
Great video. I have the same transmission, 2000 Cherokee 4x4, slowly lost R over the past 5,000 miles- started off slight slipping and now fully slipping in R , all 4 forward gears work perfectly including 1st and 2 in manual low, put it in R and it might send 5% power to the wheels, but just slips, but the wheels will spin backwards if you jack it up off the ground, but you can stop it with your hands. Fluid like new and was serviced every 40,000 miles, high miles 267,000.... I will pull it apart and see what I find.... Thanks for the video.
Dude, not the first time you've done this! You know your way around that thing and take no shit from those bolts. Very impressive. I hope I never have to do this....ever.
Hiram, Wow, never seen so many roller thrust washers in use for one application. They are a stout low friction method of keeping clearances accurate. Just amazed how well they all looked given the amount of saturated heat they must endure. And then, the darned transmission is filled with plastic washers! It's almost like two different engineering teams designed this unit with very different philosophy's ! :-) Great video.
Your a great mechanic Hiram ,pleasure watching! I am a millwright mechanic and i have some transmission problems in my 1998 Jeep Cherokee classic, not downshifting properly.Your video is very helpful, thanks :)
Another excellent video Hiram. Even though you say you had a problem with your voice I could hear you perfectly in this video, much better than some previous ones. The cam was nice and clear too. Thanks for sharing.
Ok I’ve watched it five times beginning to end. I hope everything goes back the same way you took it apart. I have a 97 aw4 that I need to change the output shaft so I can put it in a 4x4. Wish me luck
This would be my scenario: "Humpty dumpty sat on a wall, humpty dumpty had a great fall, and all the kings horses and all the kings men (including me) could not put humpty dumpty together again!
Thank you for the very informative video. I have a query, however, about a friend's J95 Prado that runs the 30-43 LE AW4 AT gearbox from Aisin; the vehicle had overheated, and was towed on it's rear wheels for approximately 800 kilometers. However, after it was brought back and the overheating issue was fixed, the vehicle has chewed through two torque converters in 3000 odd kilometers, and we're unable to isolate why. Could you help us with a guess?
I have a y2k XJ and just acquired an AW4 outta an unknown year XJ. The trans is smoked, but I'ma tear it apart to get the better scrap price and hopefully learn something along the way.
Hi There. Excellent video thank you very much by any chance do you have a video with the reverse process in this transmission? I chance my valve body and now I can go reverse and even in P go forward. If any Tip you can provide?
Hiram.
Hi Hiram,Thank you for sharing your experience and knowledge to us beginners (and also making it easy to digest).I manage to disassemble an a341e out of a lexus, thanks to your video. Now that i got all the parts come out, i found out most of the gears (that are not part of the rebuild kit) and housing are rusty creating surface imperfection. My question is ... is this transmission still usable ? If so how can i safely remove the rust ?Can you make a short video how you cleanup internals of automatic transmission ? I'm sure it will help a lot of diyers like me. Again thank you Hiram ...
Saludos hiran gracias por tus vídeos de verdad he aprendido mucho, quisiera que hagas un vídeo de a340 en español ya que no domino nada el ingles, gracias
hi from Costa rica... Great video.... I have a problem with my ZJ with AW4... very weak the reserve... Any ideas? thanks again fir the video. You are a very PRO.
nice work, i have a problem with my toyota pickup 2wd 1993. the "drive" shift is not working so, i go to the transmission workshop and fix it, but do the same the trans in cold condittion don´t walk and take some temp and begin to road like new, i think the solenoids are in bad conditions, or what did you thing?
Hi, does the intermediate band as well as intermediate clutch come on simultaneously during 1-2 shift. Why do some transmissions not have an intermediate sprag/clutch? Thanks for the amazing videos.
Hi. I am from Brazil. I work in the Jeep's plant here. I am a resident of transmissions in the plant. Here, two automatic transmissions are used 948TE (9 speed - ZF/chrysler) and AF25 ( 6 speed - Aisin). Do you have a videos about this transmissions? Thanks and congratulations for your job.
Hiram, my 1990 Jeep cherokee is not wanting to shift properly. I've adjusted the kick down cable and replaced the tps. The fluid and filter have been changed. Could it be as simple as replacing those solenoids? I know it's hard to say without seeing it in person but is this a common problem on Cherokee's? Thanks for any info.
I just followed this, and i would like to point out a mistake. At least my pump has 2 threads that fit a smaller bell housing bolt for prying on bolt rather than pump. Instead of a normal bolt hole 2 have bigger threads
So if my transmission drops in and out of overdrive while doing 60 to 70 mph, which part would be my problem part more than likely? My transmission has a couple thousand miles on it and I was considering doing some work to it myself, tho it looks like a serious project
Hey buddy, I like this video and you seem very knowledgeable. Maybe you could let me know whether it's a waste of time to keep trying to sort out my AW4 trans problem or just get a new one. I have an issue and I'll describe the symptoms below. I want to say it's electronic because when I unplug the TCU I can shift through the gears manually and it shifts and drives fine with no slipping or anything. But it could be a problem internally as well. Maybe you are more equipped to know what it is? When the transmission is cold, everything shifts and runs perfectly as if it is a brand new transmission. It has new trans fluid, new shift solenoids, and a new trans filter and trans pan. The level of fluid is perfect, not overfilled not underfilled. I have tried a different TCU from a running and driving Jeep and it did not help. When the transmission is in D gear, and is hot (usually after idling for a while or idling through a drive-thru or something) sometimes it will shift perfectly through first and second, but when it goes to hit third gear it will take forever to shift and then misshift and rev as if it's in neutral and will not drive. Now if I put the trans into D3 it will go back down to second gear (not third gear). If I put it in D1-2, it will also stay in second gear. But if it is in D3 and I floor it, and run it all the way up to 5250RPM (rev limiter) it will shift into third gear and then I can put it back in D and it will shift to fourth and the TC will lock up. Also if I have it in D3 and it is in second gear, the TC will lock up after a certain speed even though normally that trans won't lock up the TC in second gear. So my question is, do you think it's missing a shift because of a hardware issue, or because of an electronic issue? My TPS measures good, all voltage to everywhere seems good, all plugs are connected except for one plug that is supposed to go onto the side of the bellhousing on the driver side which I believe is a plug for the 4H/4L indicator on the dash for when you put the transfer case in 4wd. There is no receptacle on the side of the bellhousing for that plug as my Jeep is a 95 before they introduced that receptacle, and I'm guessing the previous owner swapped in a transmission from a later year Jeep, or maybe from a Grand Cherokee or other Jeep.
That's what I figured. There is a plug on the harness, it is two wires, and in forum posts I've seen it is supposed to plug into the driver side of the bellhousing. But my bellhousing has no input there for a plug. Someone must have swapped trans and bellhousing from the wrong year Jeep. Thanks for the input, I'll just buy the correct year reman trans and swap it in.
I just had one of these rebuilt, but unfortunately when I installed the torque converter in fully it will not spin. Seems like the oil pump is seized do you think it was a bad rebuild?
When do we get assembly of e4od?i am loyal subscriber.teardown videos not really needed as much as assembly.need more assembly videos to get more subscribers.
Very impressive video Hiram one quick question a friend of mine said that he had gone through his transmission and put in the kit from Monster Transmissions to beef up that transmission is this something that can be done and/or is recommended supposed to come with Kevlar clutches excetera excetera I would like to know your opinion about beefing it up what to use
I have a question about the feeder tubes going to the valve body. Are they supposed to move up and down freely ? Because I had the transmission rebuilt and I did not like the cork gasket. so I noticed that the feeder tubes moved freely up and down to the point of I could see where they were rubbing on the trans pan. So I just barely bent them so that they would stay up in the valve body. I still have not installed the transmission yet. Please let me know if this is ok !

You are a genius. You did in 33 minutes what would take me 33 days. I don't care if you have done it 100 times. I am impressed.

Aw4 and the 4.0 are one of the most bulletproof setups for offroading ive ever used swear on my life
This is what job security looks like.
These guys are full of shit

I have rebuilt medium case cruisamatics. These are much more complex but with your video I should be able to disassemble and rebuild. Thank you!
THANK YOU! Just rebuilt my AW4 step my step thanks to your vid!! You rock and now I'm moving again!!! :3
I may have to do the same soon. Any special tools you needed for reassembly? Did you follow torque specs from a hilton or similar manual?
ncsugray90 I used Grant ft lbs ;) snap ring plyers are a must.
Well done and may God bless you \ Your brother Mr. Hamid Al-Faham from Iraq
This video fully confirms my sense of intimidation with transmissions.
this made my rebuild so much less stressful
The same transmission used on Mitsubishi Delica L400 called ASIN 8980 11 might be some slight differences but bone is the same.
always enjoy watching experts doing their job
You are the boss........... great lighting and camera angle......attention to details
Ok I will definitely not be trying to do that myself! Definitely not your first rodeo! Very impressed with your skill!
Thats what i am thinking too. had a buddy offer to help me do it but im not so sure
Your a great mechanic Hiram ,pleasure watching! I am a millwright mechanic and i have some transmission problems in my 1998 Jeep Cherokee classic, not downshifting properly.Your video is very helpful, thanks :)
Thank you Hiram for another informative video.

I like the fancy new title graphics. Looks very professional. Good job Hiram.
AWESOME video, thanks Hiram - youre the man! Hoping youll do installation video on this unit one day! :)
Ok I’ve watched it five times beginning to end. I hope everything goes back the same way you took it apart. I have a 97 aw4 that I need to change the output shaft so I can put it in a 4x4. Wish me luck
Thanks for sharing. I have a Jeep Cherokee and was curious to see what it had for a transmission.
This is like watching clowns jumping out of a car at the circus....parts keep coming and coming and coming out !!!! LOL
This would be my scenario: "Humpty dumpty sat on a wall, humpty dumpty had a great fall, and all the kings horses and all the kings men (including me) could not put humpty dumpty together again!
Hey great videos, are you going to show the aw4 rebuild,I really need to see that one, thank you for the videos!
Awesome videos.

Professional brother thats a lot of parts to keep track of. Best just let you do it. But I would like to try it sometime.
wow I knew trans were complex but this is crazy complicated
good vid thanks
Great video I currently have a 2008 W-4 that makes a knock noise when I pull the TV cable out neon years

Very detailed tear down too! Thank you.
Thanks for the video,i have same transmission and will try to rebuild it🙏🙏🙏
The range sensor is also the neutral safety switch and the switch for the backup lights. They also cost $200 !!
thanks hiram.
sound quality is great
Nice job. Really liking your vids. Very thorough
VERY NICE VIDEO HIRAM KEEP THEM ROLLING BUDDY THUMB UP
I'd have to clear my whole garage before I could even consider diving into a project like that.
I will never look @ a transmission the same again lol
Great video Maestro Hiram!
Man Hiram, you are my hero.
Muy bueno video 👍👍👍Saludos desde santa María CA

Your great. You have done this so much you know what every single bolt size is....lol.... great video...
Sooooooooooooo many pieces, thanks for the video
Amazing video, it's very professional I would like to subscribe to receive news from you, thanks Hiram Gutierrez you are the man.

GTG brother, thanks for video!
Hiram, U are a life saver, thank much, have U a assembly of this trans
very good and explained great Thanks
Damn your fast! Nice work man, very interesting stuff.
when i see this how many parts there are makes me feel like to change the fluid every year on my 98 montero sport.

nice tanks for ur videos they help me 2 much
So hopefully this gets to you. Can you convert the transmission from a 2000 xj to a 4WD?
I just followed this, and i would like to point out a mistake. At least my pump has 2 threads that fit a smaller bell housing bolt for prying on bolt rather than pump. Instead of a normal bolt hole 2 have bigger threads

Muy buena clase por un profesional
Great vid! is the rebuild video around? love to see that
1st time doing this ? lol - dude that was awesome !!!
Is the AW4 transmission able to really tow trailers up to 5000lb? or just 3500lb?
im about to start a rebuild on my jeep this vid helps
i have 2014 jeep grand how much trans mission oil in the pan it take like 16 quats and whats the thing way of doing this,,i like ur video by the way
What a great demo!
I just had one of these rebuilt, but unfortunately when I installed the torque converter in fully it will not spin. Seems like the oil pump is seized do you think it was a bad rebuild?

Man. You have brains
I have a 1990 Jeep Cherokee, will that be the same transmission? Also do you hav3 a video replacing the torque converter?
I have a question about the feeder tubes going to the valve body. Are they supposed to move up and down freely ? Because I had the transmission rebuilt and I did not like the cork gasket. so I noticed that the feeder tubes moved freely up and down to the point of I could see where they were rubbing on the trans pan. So I just barely bent them so that they would stay up in the valve body. I still have not installed the transmission yet. Please let me know if this is ok !
Have you done any videos doing the front seal? Im pouring transmission fluid :(
muy buena ilustración ..i like..
