This is my delight, thus to wait and watch at the wayside
where shadow chases light and the rain comes in the wake of the summer.
Messengers, with tidings from unknown skies,
greet me and speed along the road.
My heart is glad within, and the breath of the passing breeze is sweet.
From dawn till dusk I sit here before my door,
and I know that of a sudden the happy moment will arrive when I shall see.
In the meanwhile, I smile and I sing all alone.

Anecdote on the song

The song Amar ei path-chawatei ananda was published in the journal "Tattvabodhini Patrika'' and printed with the title "Pratiksha" in April-May 1912. The compilation of Sanchayita has this song under the title "Pathochaoa ''.
In a letter to philosopher Pramathalal Sen, Tagore, who was quite dissatisfied with attempts to translate his works, writes, - “I can’t even expect that my poems can be properly translated into English - let alone metrical translation. Even so they must be tolerably rendered in fairly plain prose. If possible, I will have a go at it when I get to England.”
It is significant that the poet says nothing about his own efforts in this letter. Even during the last visit to Shilaidaha, he was busy translating into English songs from Gitanjali, and various other books.
He continued translating his poems and songs into English during the long voyage to England.
After reaching London, the poet and his travelling companions halted at Bloomsbury Hotel. Tagore telephoned artist and critic Sir William Rothenstein and handed him the notebook containing translations. Rothenstein said, “Here was poetry of a new order which seemed to me on a level with that of the great mystics.” Tagore dedicated Gitanjali to Rothenstein.
The song Amar ei path-chaawatei ananda, translated by Tagore, is redolent with lyricism and the imagery of natural splendours. Its sensitivity and gentle cadence continue to enthral listeners.
