It's an amazing piece of architectural structure we have in this part of the world but as I noticed the toll booths have changed 3 times since opening. Plus the widening of the bridge just makes you wonder how much money they are actually making with all the vehicles crossing over. And yet they still continue to rise the toll fee. However, regardless of price it still better than crossing by ferry and brings tourism to Cornwall, by passing Saltash to become a derelict town of despair with many businesses either opening or closing. The tunnel didn't help either, and with the the Saltash services becoming a jam packed cesspit with low to middle class people pilling up at McDonalds, just makes Saltash a place not worth visiting. The Saltash town council shows off their staff, but still fails to meet the community needs with weeds and rubbish lining the streets on every nut and corner. Saltash could be a much better and welcoming place but the bridge is the starting point for those who enter the Gateway to Cornwall. Saltash should be sparkling for those who visit.

Very eagle eyes of you. No one has noticed that in the past 20 years, lol

    "The waters of Plymouth"?.. 🙄
Unless I'm much mistaken, the riverbed up to the average high water mark on the Devon side belongs to 'The Duchy of Cornwall'...

I'll blame dad for that one, he used to do all the script and research. I'm his defence, he was a Janner, born and bred, so he probably was a little biased. 🙂

From this footage it looks like it was tolls in both directions at first. So when was it tolls only from Cornwall to Plymouth direction ??

Was toll payment only from Cornwall to Devon back in the 80's. Same on the Torpoint ferries.

It was originally shot in 1997. I plan on updating it, I'm seeking permission at the moment.

@@AarchiveRailways Love to see a similar documentary on the widening project. Thanks for this one - a nice piece of history captured. Government attitude to the South West hasn't changed over the years.

Narrator it isn't the Tamer bridge it's the TaMAR bridge - it's not Tamer as in lion tamer it's the river Tamar.

Not too a Janner, everything ends with 'er', dad (the narrator), was born and raised in Plymouth, so a proper Janner.
