The term "conversational interfaces" is thrown around a lot these days, but what does it actually mean? Will we soon be having conversations with everything around us, like our toothbrushes and trash cans? What's the difference between a chatbot and a VUI? How do we build these highly interactive systems in the right way? This talk will tell you what Conversation Design is and some of the best practices to make sure we get it right.
About the Speaker: Cathy Pearl is Head of Conversation Design Outreach at Google, and the author of the O'Reilly book, "Designing Voice User Interfaces". She's been designing and creating Voice User Interfaces (VUIs) for nearly 20 years and is passionate about helping everyone make the best conversational experiences possible. Past speaking engagements include Cannes Lion International Festival of Creativity, O’Reilly Bot Day, and TechCrunch Disrupt. Previously, Cathy was VP of User Experience at Sensely, whose virtual nurse avatar helps people stay healthy. She has worked on everything from programming NASA helicopter pilot simulators to designing a conversational iPad app in which Esquire magazine's style columnist tells users what they should wear on a first date. She has an MS in Computer Science from Indiana University and and BS in Cognitive Science from UC San Diego.

She summarized the most important concepts in this video and this is a fantastic domain where a lot of improvements are expected to make the experience a lot better than today.

When we want to co-evolve with technology, humans must adopt its conversational efficiency and not the other way round! And therefore Mimikri of human-like conversations is toast.
