    1:05 & 1:07 The artist who drew these images deserves an award! Ukamochi in Japanese culture is usually depicted similar to the Goddess Demeter of Greek Mythology. Not once have I ever seen an accurate depiction in Japanese art of Ukamochi like this one. Major cheers to the artist who made me laugh so hard.

      the legend says Ammy was too busy, so she sent HER HUSBAND AND BROTHER, in her stead, when he reached the place, he saw the food goddess have prepared an entire feast! but every time she wanted to add something she hid away. out of curiosity, he stole a look, and saw her creating food FROM ALL HER HOLES ... ALL OF THEM!
      [in japanese myth since the deities are all humanoid whenever they create anything for us it seems like waste! literally!]
      so when he saw that what he was about to eat is literally her sewage! made of vegetables, fruits, rice, meat, bread, etc.
      when she roared she created cows, and when she "delivered" she created rice, and she "answered nature's call" she created SaKe (rice wine) and vegetables..
      Tsukuyomi got so much sick of her, he finished her off, and threw all her "waste" to the mortals world.. thus mortals now have food.. [AHEM] the goddess's sewage.... when reading japanese myth.. "shush" your logical brain.. since japanese only use concepts and ideas to describe the illogical.

      There's that celestial kingdom from the Kaguya-hime myth. I know the myth is speculated to have come from China and may have been rooted in Chinese Buddhism and traditional Chinese folk belief, but hey, I don't see anything wrong with merging the two tales and pretending they are closely connected to Tsukuyomi. The modern take of the tale in Japan always depicts the celestial as a moon kingdom anyway.

    Tsukoyomi is the only Shinto god that I fail to understand. I don’t know how to view him, except that he is a swordsman. Is he quick tempered or responsible and all noble? He lives quietly like an introvert, but his reaction was very extroverted. What a complex personality he has :) are there actually shrines dedicated to him?

    • @piereandreturner2818
      @piereandreturner2818 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      There are many shrines dedicated to him. Even Susanno has many shrines. Like the Gassan Shrine located in Gassan Mount. The kanji for Gassan literally translates to Moon Mountain. His name can be translated into Moonlit, and according to the KimuraKami blog, he's associated with not only the moon and night but also the moonlight and passage of time. So he is also associated with lighting the night sky and controlling the passage of the seasons, which may explain why he is sometimes also associated with agriculture. Tsukuyomi is also said to control the tide. You know how the moon is associated with crop harvesting in agriculture and sea tides, right? He is said in the blog to also defend nature and the social order. He is one of the few known major male lunar deities. Fun fact: Inari, a major god of agriculture, rice, tea, sake, and fertility, is the kami with the most shrines dedicated to him, which constituted about a third of the total shrines in Japan.

      @itanchiro5524 Regarding your question about his personality, Tsukuyomi is always depicted as a very dignified, beautiful, and elegant god in shrines. Sometimes, almost seemingly, to be an androgynous man. He is dignified and extremely strict with order and ethics to the point that he's willing to break the order itself (which is killing) in order to correct it, which is why he killed Uke Mochi (but honestly, I would also be angry and disgusted if someone provided that kind of food), whom he considered to breach the heavenly court ethic by providing the food that way. Which is also ironic because, as the god of the moon, he's also associated with the passage of time (lunar calendar), making agriculture a part of his attributes. He is also rarely present in Japanese myth and is less prominent compared to other kami, which resulted in the image of him being enigmatic, mysterious, and introverted in modern Japanese culture. I hope this provides you with an insight into how the ancient Japanese view him and his personality. Many western blogs claim "he's viewed negatively," but it's far more complicated than that.

      @@truthspreader1996 It probably has something to do with Tsukuyomi being less prominent compared to other Kami. Despite that, he's one of the most important. He's associated with the passage of time and the lunar calendar, and along with that, crop harvesting. His myth is also the Shinto explanation for the separation of day and night. And as the great kami or god with the attributes of moon, night, moonlight, and the lighting of the night sky associated with him, the ancient Japanese prayed to him, yet there's so little story about him, which resulted in the image of him being an enigmatic, mysterious, and introverted god in Japanese culture, but at the same time, the Uke Mochi tale has made him a god that is extremely strict with order and ethics. It's also worth noting that he has a very little presence and is so less prominent that there's not much depiction of him in ancient Japan, but every time he does appear, he's always depicted as an elegant, dignified, and beautiful man.

    1- he was born when Izanagi CLEANED HIS EYE WHILE BATHING cleaning himself from the underworld. not weeping! and from Izanagic's other eye Amaterasu was born!
    2- HE WAS AMATERASU'S HUSBAND AND BROTHER, NOT FRIEND, and when he finished off the goddess of food because he was disgusted by how she made food releasing it FROM ALL HER HOLES LITERALLY, Amaterasu divorced him.
    3- you said he had "black hair" when all the references show him with silver hair BECAUSE HE'S THE MOON EMBODIMENT.... wow!
    before you record something else.. do more research!
    back in the day it WAS THE NORM FOR DEITIES TO MARRY THEIR OWN SIBLINGS. you don't like it?? IT'S JAPANESE MYTH! it has nothing to do with the west!
