- U.S. Marines with Range Company, Weapons and Field Training Battalion, Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego, train recruits on the proper handling and firing of the M16A4 service rifle aboard Edson Range, Camp Pendleton, Calif., April 20, 2016. Marines instructed and coached the recruits during both the grass and firing week portions of recruit training, ensuring the recruits are able to fire accurately and qualify on the rifle. (U.S. Marine Corps motion media by Sgt. John C. Lamb)
From an Army guy. God bless the Marine Corps for staying true to the old school.
Wearing a Blindfold I strip an M-16 or an M-4 or an M1 Garand. I like the AK-Anything as it works. Period. Sloppy and matches to any other fun gun you have in the dirt of a Battle Field! Common sense can not be taught. (Will it work in the heat of Battle?) Stupid can not be fixed.
Seriously, the Corps barely exists today. You can thank Force Design 2030. Most people are sadly not even aware what they've done to the Marine Corps. It's tragic!
@@Jmp64-ns8zl can you elaborate
Former AF security policeman here. If it not broke don't fix it.
Old school? What do you consider old school? In ‘03 we qual’d with irons, bone support, and a 1-point leather sling, or as we used it… range tourniquet . 😂
Now they’re using ACOG’s and supports. Soon they’ll be issued PlayStation controllers.
Uncle was a Marine. He taught me iron sights shooting.
To this day I hunt with my Grandfathers Lee/Enfield. Food in the freezer.
As did my father, he was USAF Security Police (now called Security Forces)
Great to have a family member that was in the military. The military Veteran has Great stories to share about their military experience while on active duty.
1968. Shot expert, platoon high shooter with M14, iron sights. Semper Fi.
1971 for me . . . God bless iron sights . . .
I believe that every military personnel who qualified with the rifle should also receive a Sniper Qualifications Award Badge, too.
Every Marine is also a janitor.
Two questions.
1. What is the purpose of such a stupid remark?
2. Which branch did YOU serve in? I’m guessing not.
@lorinkramer5805 as a veteran of the Marine Corps it's a valid statement.
@@lorinkramer5805 What, you never mopped a floor, cleaned a latrine, did police call? BTW, I have more days in the door of a C-130 than you have in a uniform.
@@Ravehalfing241 Its true if you are a veteran of the Army as well, or any other service, except for the Air Force. I think they have maids. Thanks for your service.
@@MAC-tv6zq lmao!!!!
Thank you for your cervix!
We used iron sights in Air Force basic training in 1996. Something special about those iron sights.
We're the best at what we do. Semper fi.
With what little we're given.
While on active Duty in the Marines, I was amazed about that amongst the Marines whom I served with some were Army Veterans, too, that switched to the Marine Corps from the Army.
@@JohnRodriguez-zn4gf I had a guy in my platoon in boot camp that had been in the Air Force. It was always a riot to hear from him. Like when we were on the rifle range, that blew his mind. In the Air Force they had that training in just one day. I guess they're not that worried about being able to shoot.
I was a active duty Marine for 12 yrs. I was a marksmanship instructor for my last 4 months on active duty. We did not have these Acog scopes when I was in it was good old iron sights
And?
Right! Nothing against optics, I use them but only AFTER getting the fundamentals down pat. Optics have no place in the initial training. These new guys are screwed not if but when their optics get damaged ect. Yes I know iron sights can get damaged as well but at least they will have the training to be able to adjust, repair or compensate as needed.
@@pumpdump4476 and it hasn’t occurred to you they train on both? 🙄
I'm thinking the Corps knows the range instructors should be a lot more chill than the recruits' regular DIs. After all, a DI screaming at a stressed out recruit with a loaded rifle is not a good idea, right Gunny Hartman?
Yes Absolutely Correct. Pay Backs is a Mother F@#ker. This is why, Always Do Right to everyone, especially while you are in active duty. No need to Step on active duty soldiers' toes. Because if you do, Guarantee, it will Haunt you back for hurting any of your fellow active military duty soldier. We live in a small World and we are going to meet again.
One of the many factors that separates the Marine Corps from the rest of the pack.. coming from a Guardsman! Much respect 🫡
God bless Commandant Al Grey in heaven for making every Marine a rifleman again.
Come on scopes when I went thru Paris island no scopes iron sights and I used the M-16A1. we Marines are known to break shit and scopes will break. Teach iron sights
I shot with both. Same fundamentals of sight alignment and picture applies along with trigger squeeze.
scopes help you see better, but they won't help you shoot better. always stay sharp by sticking to the fundamentals
👍🇺🇸
You can now use optics while competing in across the course, national service rifle competitions. No more irons at 600.
i do both, my scores got slightly better with a scope
I. Was a PMI in the days of iron sights. 1968
And you didn't teach Marines to have a sling that their hand loosely fit under either, like what we see here.
You could have been my PMI. Semper Fi. Edson Range? I always remember BRASS.
In the U.S. Army every soldier is a rifleman. Unlike the marines, we have Paratroopers, Army Rangers, Green Beret's. Everything the Marines have, the U.S. Army has more of. While the Marines bragg about how great they are, the U.S. Army does no have too. Army Leads the way
My Brother Soldier, Marine Veteran here. I respect your honest and sincerity. Just want to share with you that Marines Highly appreciate and Highly Respect all the other Branches of the USA Military. Together We Get The Mission Accomplished. Thank You for Sharing My Fellow Army Veteran. God Bless.

1962. Iron sights on my M1 and M14. Like learning to drive a stick.automatic is easy to change over after.
1:25 pith helmet,!frigging awesome 😎
PI🌴SC., 1976, M16A1.
Wearing a heavy glove on the OFF HAND with the fingers cut off. The SLING is so TIGHT, you can see (not feel) your fingers turning: yellow, orange, black, purple, green , red …. Then my DI comes along and PUSHES the rifle butt down my right shoulder a little bit 🗣️”TIGHTEN UP THAT SLING !!!!” Aye Aye Sir.
SEMPER FI 🇺🇸
I can relate. PI, 1974. Sling palsy.
Proud alumni of iron sights. Wore the woodlands too. Want to teach the fundamentals of marksmanship? Ace the ACOG.
Our rifle sling was wrapped on our arm like we were about to shoot dope in our arm as well as down range.
Ol green utility utility uniform , iron sights , range book to record dope on the rifle , sling on the arm , range coaches . Never saw optics on a rifle to two years later when we saw the scout/snipers firing 7.62 Remington 700s at Camp Lejeune ,the days of high adventure !
Twenty years ago and I remember it like it was yesterday. “Tighter around the arm, recruit. Your circulation should be cut off, your pulse will throw off your shots.”
Qualified Expert every year with the M16A1 and its iron sites.
A2 . . . great weapon
Excellent Job fellow Marine. Just wanted to make sure that you know that you also at the same time also qualified as a Sniper, too. So you should also receive the High Expert Sniper Badge too.
¡Estos hombres están bien motivados y su entrenamiento es constante y lo perfeccionan cada día que pasa, excelente vídeo gracias!👍😉
Gracias muchas por su Gran commentario. Dios tambien te Vendiga Hermano.
Every Marine a rifle-person.
I loved the M4 in combat. Light and hardly any recoil. Easy to clean and stayed on target while firing at your target. I did get to fire a M1 rifle also a AK47. The AK and M1 was heavy and durable but lacked staying on target. After firing. Don’t get me started with the M249 . I’m glad I wasn’t the one who was carrying it in Iraq. I did carry the ammo bag every five days. One of them anyway. We had four bags of ammunition we carried while we were dismounted.
Wow. Retired in 1996. Never fired less than expert. Didn’t realize they qualified with Trijinon sites. 500 yard line was brutal with iron sites.
Then as soon as you get to MCT/SOI the instructors tell you that its ALL THE WRONG WAYS to shoot. Got told that by every instructor I met. Shit you not. "If you were trying to be in the olympics yeah, but in war, hell no." Quote from my instructors there.
Excellent Point and Clearly Said. Thank You my fellow Veteran soldier.
The Marines are looking for a few good men. Still are. Go Army!
I was a PMI.. One of the best jobs in the Corps.
As retired US MARINE it does not matter what MOS you do , will learn how to manipulate the M16 A4
I had issues with ACOGs at first because had trouble focusing on the reticles. I was one of the last groups to shoot with iron sights at boot. When I got to my unit, it was ACOGs.
What was the year that you were the last to use the iron sights?
Every branch of the military should put this much time into rifle marksmanship.
That would make too much sense. Instead, we emphasize critical race theory and DEI initiatives.
@@DanielZawacki-bz3xd Man calm down, the whole "DEI is ruining the military" nonsense people trying to politicize the military.
When I went into the Marines we didn’t use the ACOGS in boot camp it was iron sights. Didn’t see the ACOGs until I got to the fleet.
The M16A4 is waaayyy better than an M4
Wish i had an ACOG when i was in
Marine Corps ..”every Marine is a Rifleman” is what made a lot of Good Infantry Marines go other routes….Not every Marine is a Riflemen…
Yes Great Point. With Highest Respects to all the Marines of any era, only the Marines who continue to excel after Basic Training are the ones who get the promotions, recognition, and put in charge to lead other fellow Marine Corps soldiers.
Army tought me to adjust the sling & wrap your arm threw it to make aim count.
Yes absolutely correct and also to prevent the rifle's backwards recoil from hitting the shooters' face after each round goes off.
I don’t see where the myth comes that the Corps is unique in this since every branch requires their members to qualify
basics rein supreme always. the more things get complicated the more people cut corners in training. whether unarmed combat or firearms training. a marine, a soldier needs to be at the top of their game . in the words of gunny hartman, R.Lee Ermy from full metal jacket, "if you hesitate, then you will be dead marines, and marines are not allowed to die without permission." Or if people prefer what american kenpo karate grandmaster ed parker said, "he who hesitates, he meditates in horizontal position." neither of those scenarios are palateable to anyone with good survival instincts.
Iron sights on the Island in 75 M16A1 , qualified Sharpshooter, unqualified shooters were lower than whale shit at the bottom of the sea .
My man sgt Haney 😎 served with that devil dog
Iron sights, M14. One shot one kill.
Volume of fire, old timer
😂😂😂
I don't care you're still a POG cook😅😅
The man must be a real gangster if he wears a pith helmet.
If I remember correctly from almost 30 years ago, range coaches during boot camp all wore pith helmets, and only the PMIs wore campaign covers. Not sure what is up w/ some of the coaches wearing campaign covers now.
The pith helmets were old school also in the "Old Corps" long ago !😅
I see we don't use a tight sling on the upper arm anymore. Curious. Sgt Sudduth USMC
Marksmanship begins with irons first. Optics second
Look according to the Heritage Foundation report on the status of the US
Military the only brach that can accomplish it's Mission is the US. Marines. That is in the report, I report, you decide.
1:40 If Jadakiss was a Marine.
This is my rifle. There are many like it, but this one is mine. My rifles is my best friend. It is my life. I must master my life. My rifle, without me is useless, I am useless. I must fire my rifle true……….
PMI 81-83 Pu'uloa RR Ewa Beach Semper Fi 😎🇺🇸
This is true
Badasses!
SCOPES !!!
Bring back "open sights"... sight alignment, front sight picture... two weeks on the range.. first week snapping in and essential subjects.. second week shooting for dope and qualifying.. KD course , 200,300 and 500.. sitting, kneeling, offhand, and prone. Use of the sling. Proper marksmanship. From there, use of optics and fire and manuvare , even if it means 3 weeks of training. Be a good time to get the PFT and swim qualifying completed and pistol qualifying. Ok, 4 weeks of training... one month out of the year... seems like a good thing. Unless you're in a combat zone, everything is training. Go back to basics and teaching marksmanship. Because every Marine is a rifleman. It's tradition. Its heritage.
Before I have to shoot my rifle I must be out of explosives. Much tidier that way.
Military engineering
Same with the CAF. EVERYBODY from every trade goes through the SAME recruit course. You learn Military life, but also basic infantry tactics, weapon handling, drills, etc... THEN you go to your trade school.

what’s with the Scope ? 0311 1968 USMC
The future is now, old man.
LE academy firearms inst here. Marines were hell on wheels during rifle school, but a handgun? yeah, not so much unless they were self taught. I coule always tell Marines by the way they shot the pistol.
"Bang" ride the recoil....get hard sights....presssss Bang......
me: "What was your Marine MOS? "
"How did you know?"
me: "Shooting technique. Now, end that shit and rip that trigger. We are 3 yrds away from the target....
Actually in LE we fired from several distances, the farthest being 25 yards. The closest was directly hands on. The drill was to push the target away as you drew and fired from the hip; hopefully without shooting your weak hand
@@santamanone Our basic marksmanship started at 3-5 yrds and went to 25. 'Gaming' we took it on out to 50, if someone could do that. POST only required 25.
The combatives part did lots of skills and drills including the one you mentioned.
@@rimfirejunkie7427 “Combatives?” That’s a military term, not an LE term. In LE we do Defensive Tactics (DT) But even that never includes a firearms drill like I described. The one I described was part of our annual firearms qual. I miss both: the military qual on the M9 and the LE qual/requal in my second career.
True! As a Marine, our 1911s were trash with worn out bushings. Also, pistols, like shotguns, are a different discipline than rifle accuracy. As a rifleman, if you were in my sights you were dead, but my handgun skills weren't nearly as honed. Maybe that's why Col. Jeff Cooper said "the purpose of a handgun is to get to your rifle."
I shot a 396 out of 400 on the pistol range with the M9 back in 2017. Got an award for being range high shooter. These days I'm in the Army and I shoot 30 out of 30 targets with the M17. Granted I learned how to shoot from my dad teaching me with an M9 chambered in .40. To this day, I love the Berretta. Funny story, I was once told that my shooting stance is all wrong, and then when I shot so high, I was told by the same guy that he doesn't understand why I'm so accurate with the pistol. Pistol marksmanship is my bread and butter. Just for your knowledge, I was USMC 2009 to 2018 and then US Army 2020 to present.
Rifleman first whatever your specialty second. YEP
Can they not shoot without an optic?
Real marines learned with iron sights 😂
WTF was that? When we "snapped in" during the 1970s that rifle sling was tight against your support hand, which is why we had a shooting glove, and the butt stock forced into your shoulder for a solid weld. Hell, even the non-quals or "unqs" would have shot expert if we had ACOGs and charging handles that didn't pour exhaust gases into your eyes.
ACOGs...not Iron Sights!! WTF!!
Semper Fi
BRASSF SEMPER FI 83-91
Sure.
Not anymore , train without scopes first .
The M16A1 shoots a glorified 22cal bullet. If you can't put a round down range at 200 yards. You have Avery serious problem 😮. Semper Fi bro's 76.
Devil Dawgs Hollywood great training
What Optic, is this ? 😳
Acog
Iron sights 1995. Adjust your body and control tour breathing. Rahhhh!!!!
yea, and there a 4 army to 1 marine, we get the job done, guess some of army have never heard of MARSOC, FORCE RECON, and yes we parachute, duh
Realistically MARSOV are the new kids on the block
Yeah but not every Marine is not an Infantryman "0311". Big difference!
WMs are not riflemen, they are WMs
If she can hit a target and not cry about it, who's to complain if she's a WM
@@Excalibur01 what happens when a 200 lbs Marine goes down in full combat gear? No WM will be carrying him out.
Learn metal sights first, then scope. We learned peeps first.

How can you be a rifleman in the present US Miliary. Number one you have to get a real rifle not a toy rifle like they have now.
I call BS, not every marine is a rifleman. A marine that works in the chow hall and boils rice is not a rifleman.
