Having been there in 1973, and having also been in a family with some interracial relationships, I can tell you it was different. Having said that, ultimately those people were accepted as a part of the family, at least where I come from. This song still sounds good.
As a 62 year old. I saw racism and even as a young man , I never understood it. How can Love be a bad thing. Love is in short supply to these days. ... Love you all.
I remember as a teenager when this song came out. I was groovin' to the tune and lovin' it. The lyrics told a story unlike most songs out there. And it made people think about racism and prejudice. It had a lot of soulful thinking in it. The song was so popular (It went to #1).
I was 18 in '73...loved this song and the sound production of it. It made me think of "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner" and Spencer Tracy's speech pointing out the importance of following your heart where love's concerned and not bending to the prejudices of others.
The entirety of this song can be summed up in the final lines: "Ain't no difference if you black or white. Brothers, you know what I mean." So, what exactly does he mean...brothers?
I agree 100% Angela,, what boggles my mind is also the fact that some feel the need to make a big problem,, show the most hate,,etc.,when it in no way even affects them or their lives..Truly sad & twisted people.
It is a great groove I love to this day…..this was a very POWERFUL message…. And I agree with your assessment….Love is Love no matter who it is! And every one should date who they want..the Media is NOT your Judge or your friend!!! Love is Color Blind 💯❤️🙏🏻🙏🏿❤️
It's a great song ☺️ with a very powerful message! It can be interpreted in so many ways, but we should all realize that 😘💕 love should be the common denominator for every aspect in life! Goodbye 👋 fellow viewers!
Memories of hearing this on the radio quite a bit back in the day. Great groove and great vibe. We need more songs like this. We need to keep them coming.
You're a very intelligent, compassionate, and beautiful young woman, Angela. Anyone with a brain and a true heart will welcome you, your family, and your extended family. I'm always relieved for our society's future when I encounter folks like yourself.
You are absolutely correct, You can't control who you fall in love with, the heart loves what the heart loves. Yes, people suck and will always judge. We still have a long way to go.
I was 12 years old when this was released and I absolutely loved it. As an old guy I used to watch the Midnight Special back in the day as well. There is a live version of this track from the Midnight Special that is really good as well. This version somebody dubbed the album version over the live version which I never understand why they do that. Anyway thank you for your wonderful review.
Speaking of his voice,, when released & heard for the first time,, many thought it was Rod Stewart,, which is actually understandable considering their similar voices & rasp.
I agree with you 100%. It's so hard for me to understand people who disagree. I like the song a lot. In its day, it tried to shine a light on this issue.
I loved your talk after this. You are so right. It doesn’t matter at all who you love. It’s a shame that even today others judge people wrongly for this.
There are two wolves which fight within each of us,, one wolf is good,, the other is evil... Which wolf wins?......The one you feed. Navajo/Bil Hozhoni (The Happy One)
You have to consider it was 1973. People were singing about this to raise awareness about the fact that it should never be an issue. If you love someone, that should be the only thing that matters. The same God that created me also created people who look nothing like me. He didn't make any mistakes.
I offer the wisdom that I have lived my life by,, The earth is my mother and ALL her children my brothers & sisters ❤️ 👧 🌎 🧒 ❤ Navajo/Bil Hozhoni (The Happy One)
I can remember this song and it's subject being controversial back in '73. Kinda like The Kinks LOLA. We've come far since then, but not far enough !!!!
I remember this song on the radio. Things are changing. I had a relative who was ostracized because she married an Italian man (1930s). Today no one would bat an eye. change is happening; maybe slowly, but it is happening. As you said, you have no idea who you might fall in love with. No apology necessary.
It wasn't easy coming up in the 60's. Us late baby boomers felt differently about race issues than the previous generations, and our own families couldn't understand us. It was trying times but many of us stuck it through and did make some changes....still working on it.
Angela, I feel your pain. This lyrics of this song addresses the issue of interracial relationships with blunt force trauma; almost continuing the problem by making it such a big deal. Thank you for interpreting the song in a way that shows we have come a long way since 1973. Not just in regard to race but also regarding orientation and gender. Yes we have more improvement to make but in 1973 the idea of gay marriage was a distant dream and now we have achieved it. The growing acceptance of gender as non-binary is also wonderful to see.
Right on! Heard this song a in 1973. I was in high school. I remember thinking well duh, of course, glad we are past the racist bs, and I discounted this song as being “obvious”. Boy was I in a bubble. On the whole I think much progress has been made, but progress typically is uneven, and now via social media outrageous and divisive stuff gets amplified.
Everything can be an issue as long as its constantly talked about. I feel everything can go down a different path as long as its not given any traction and looked at under a microscope. Life shouldn't have to be so hard!!!!
your making me tear up.....ive loved 2 dark girls......in the 80's......i still feel for them and think of them....i gotta go b4 i break down......bye beautiful dayone girl.....
This song came out in the early 70's. Times were different then. I married a woman of color in 1984. We still had to struggle with Idiots that everytime they opened their mouths, they showed their Ignorance! We have now been married 39 years, have 3 adult children, and 4 Grandkids. Our children are whiter than me! We taught them to like all Races, and not to diss their Mom which They never did. When they were little, and even now, Leticia got so wild looks when these white children would hug and kiss her, cause her mocha color didn't fit into their thought process! Don't care, I Love her with my life! She's my Nubian Queen, my family welcomed her with open arms! Here's to another 39 years!♥️✌️
You’re 100% right. The fact that some of this crap is still going on is very sad. People are people. We are all the same underneath. In the words of En Vogue, “Free Your Mind”.
I’ve been married to my sister wife since 91…3 kids all doing great and my oldest and his wife about to have a baby. Faith, temperament, and social desires and energy will determine long term relationships…and people who are willing to play the long game. Marriage isn’t for cowards
In my humble opinion Hot Chocolate did this better including lyrics for the dad as to what specifically he is against and yes it is very very clear..and I think Errol Brown sang it better too..🇬🇧💞🙏✝️👏👍🇺🇸
In my opinion the original by Hot chocolate has more musical texture to it. It’s very sad today in 2023 we still have this problem. Love is Love doesn’t matter what color or gender you are. Who cares who you love. Just be happy for the individuals in love…❤
Yes there are still issues with interacial relationships but we should really celebrate the progress that has been made and allow the progression to keep going naturally. I think when people get too up in arms over those that still haven't come around, we end up unintentionally slowing down the process. As MLK said, “Returning hate for hate multiplies hate, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars. Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.”
Yup but “those that still haven’t come around” _STILL WIELD A LOT OF POWER IN 2023_ They pass the hate on to their kids, they elect ppl who hate marginalized communities...
No buts! Any power they have only comes when you put things in their hands instead of taking personal responsibility. If you are fortunate enough to understand that those of other races are your brothers and sisters and not your enemy, then you have a responsibility to spread that love to those who haven't come around. The government can't make someone love and respect other people. We love because God loved us first. Those who hate will never love unless we show them love first. @@gabrielmcdonnell8699
This cover became a hit but the first didn't do as well. I'm 65 and remember this one well. I thought race relations were turning around in those days. My best friend in High School was black and we both experienced the racism going from his side of the town to mine. People still can't let it go today and it saddens me so much. Not the future I envisioned.
Born in the 50’s, I remember when interracial dating was frowned upon, some couples were threatened with jail and physical harm. Interracial dating was against the law in many US states. Now 3 of my 4 nephews date outside their race... lol.
The way people react is more a reflection of them and not coming to terms with subjects that make them uncomfortable, so instead of grappling with it, they do the easier thing of "othering" and falsely elevating themselves as morally superior.
Just reading the comments..I'm 66. It was a totally different back in those days..I'm was raised in the deep south..had a granddad that was so racial .. we would laff at him cause we thought he was crazy..
I had a black girlfriend from 2006-2008. Not one white person gave me any grief or had a problem with it. Same for most black women. Black men were a different story. Such anger and contempt. Even threats. We broke up because of it. That was my experience.
"Danger, danger when you taste Brown Sugar"... been with my Brown Sugar over 35 years n' she's still sweet. By th' way, Angela... Ya seem rather subdued, hope all is cool with you.
Angela, THANK YOU for your kind words, people should not judge others on who they love and also when is this world ever going to accept that gay people are born gay, not a choice and we shouldn’t care about race, religion, etc, and accept interracial relationships
You have to remember be it so wrong this was the early seventies and it was an issue to many. It’s wrong and it’s been getting much better. Again, this was 55 years ago.
Cover version, not too bad...try original version by Hot chocolate the original group to do record this The Song was written by Errol Brown, lead singer the of group.

Great song…great words spoken by you,Angela.
This song,, subject & reaction made Depeche Mode's song "People Are People" come to mind..Great song & powerful message.
This was a very important song of the times. Popular music can help start some of the more important conversations....

I'm sorry sweetie, I could tell you were upset during this reaction.....those people that judge, will never understand, & not worth our time 💗💗💗
You're such a beautiful soul.
Love the reaction and i know you have a great heart from your reactions Proud of you for being an Awesome person
Wizards wise words : " it's not how much you love but how much you are loved by others "
76 years old and seen it for real, love how you feel about it!!
No apology necessary......much love to you!
I'm a old white guy i graduated hi school the yr this song came out and i think you are beautiful
Hear it in the interludes?...the guitar making its case...the violins answering
...and then each sounding over each other trying to win the argument!

I was 10 when this came out.. singing this then helped me be a better person regarding this message Thanks for those great words Angela ❤
Eres un alma sensible Angela. Saludos desde Uruguay!.
this song was a listen for me about 10 or more times a day back then! it was so good!!!!!!!!!!!!
first time i see ANY of the reaction channels do this one !!
There are 15 TH-cam channels who’ve already reacted to “Brother Louie”.
there's another brother louie out there !! and that does NOT mean that ive seen them@@gabrielmcdonnell8699

Yup, Angela, *50 YEARS LATER* ppl _STILL_ have issues with IR (and LGBT+) relationships. When ppl feel threatened, the hate manifests itself.
I remember this song on the radio.
Things are changing. I had a relative who was ostracized because she married an Italian man (1930s). Today no one would bat an eye. change is happening; maybe slowly, but it is happening. As you said, you have no idea who you might fall in love with.

Black & White, Love is Love 🥰
Love is love. Color blind. Sexuality blind. Nationality blind. Love is love period.
I grew up in the 70's and black men and white women were common but white men with black women were almost unheard of then.
Back when this song came out, she wouldn't have done any better taking Louie home.
Our marriage is interracial. We have been married for 45 yrs. We had our ups and downs but stuck through it together!
Well, on a lighter note, in 1973 I was 22, and had already blown thru the Danger ! Danger ! Stop sign ! 😂 That’s a great line in that song !
It wasn't easy coming up in the 60's. Us late baby boomers felt differently about race issues than the previous generations, and our own families couldn't understand us. It was trying times but many of us stuck it through and did make some changes....still working on it.
This song maybe is more relevant today than when it first came out.

ONE RACE, THE HUMAN RACE, BE GOOD TO EACH OTHER! Yes, it is sad that not enough people don't see it, still.
Oldies love your coolness brown suga good to see ya love this hit great tunes wonderful ljs
Why you so sad!! This song was so good!! We jammed it on the radio man!!!
One of better songs from the 1970 s great live performance
Everything can be an issue as long as its constantly talked about. I feel everything can go down a different path as long as its not given any traction and looked at under a microscope. Life shouldn't have to be so hard!!!!
Well said! Thanks Angela
your making me tear up.....ive loved 2 dark girls......in the 80's......i still feel for them and think of them....i gotta go b4 i break down......bye beautiful dayone girl.....
Angela your the cutest on the youtube channel love your input and reactions ❤
One of my favorites. It's message, story, I missed as a youth. When I caught on I was like "what?". Great song though.
GREAT REVIEW❤❤TRUE❤

Voice is very Rod stewart......in fact for a long time I thought it was Rod Stewart.....
I still have this song on a 45, i still play this song on my drums 👍
People may believe "as they wish" America is a "Free Society". Freedom is the important issue! Whether you agree or not!
It's a rotten world we live in, DayOne. Too much hate in it. And like you, I hope and pray for a better tomorrow.
I married a girl from a different country and caught a lot of animosity. Could have just been me. ...
You’re 100% right. The fact that some of this crap is still going on is very sad. People are people. We are all the same underneath. In the words of En Vogue, “Free Your Mind”.
I know the original version of this by Hot Chocolate, who made some great stuff. This cover is not bad, but I prefer the original-Colin Ward

Another band called Family ( In My Own Time )
Hot Chocolate the UK band also did a version of it. This was released about 1972 - 1973.
Their’s was the original & includes viewpoint from the girls family too.
The way people react is more a reflection of them and not coming to terms with subjects that make them uncomfortable, so instead of grappling with it, they do the easier thing of "othering" and falsely elevating themselves as morally superior.
You should listen to a band called Blue Mink and there songs ( Melting Pot / The Banner Man / Good Morning Freedom / Our World ) are just a few

What is your purpose to point out that some black men you knew had a problem with it and white people didn't?
Or perhaps the white ppl who were aware of your relationship with the black woman didn’t have the courage to voice their opinion.
"Danger, danger when you taste Brown Sugar"... been with my Brown Sugar over 35 years n' she's still sweet. By th' way, Angela... Ya seem rather subdued, hope all is cool with you.
