I created a farm like this, but without the beds. But then they despawn. Was it because of the bed?

Yes if they do not have a bed near them they will despawn. If the villagers are near a village and you don’t have a bed at your farm the villagers will also despawn

I think you can prevent the despawning by trading at least one time. It should work because you lock them to the game.
