I have fallen into this trap many times. These people can be corrosive, jealous, irresponsible, overbearing, even professionals in the area you need advice. I always get a second opinion.
I learned this the hard way on trusting people just to find out they used me and laugh when things went wrong and they was in it for their personal gain this included family
Well as a rule of thumb, one should not ask anyone for advice, but rather pay attention to one's gut feeling and life experience. By asking advice, one is basically making one's fate dependent on the thoughts of another individual, more so if the advice is actually accepted and implemented, so that if something goes wrong, the whole issue gets totally messed up, and one may end up blaming oneself for having followed others' advices instead of having decided for oneself without extraneous influences. It may be easier to correct the consequences of one's own decisions than those of others' wrong advices.
Oh, yes... I'm very vigilant should I decide to ask someone for advice, and I immediately analyze their answer in the fullest detail, regardless of what they say. That's why I'm hard to deceive.
Think about this for a min...... If you ask anyone anything and it doesnt feel right then dont take the advice...... Also if your asking someone who knows nothing about what your trying to do and yoh dont do your homework and seek out the right advice. Then dont ask anyone!
With "People who don't practice what they preach" - You can be 'fat' and healthy. There's a good example, though I wish I could remember her name. She could beat many a thin person in a race or jump rope or other fitness challenges - and she's got a tummy. I think you're stereotyping - though you do have a great point.
You forgot to mention never talking advice from someone who's never been where you want to go and never achieved what you want to achieve! Know-in-alls? Discourage you to pursue something that didn't work out for them? Pessimistic and envious and draining your spirit? I know all these TOO well!
Never take advice based on opinions alone! Facts are WAY more important! Opinions are like a$$holes! They're not worth more than s•it and of course, EVERYBODY has one!

EVEN positive people can tell you the wrong thing! This alone is not a good basis!
