I had the pleasure of buying Bobby a cocktail in 2007 in MulCahys pub in Wantagh, NY in 2007 and at Cafe Baci in Wesbury, NY in 1993. He graciously thanked me both times. Thank you Bob!
He was an,amazing player, could score big goals, fight, have a drive 2nd to none...him, tonelli, Brett sutter were huge in those ranger isles playoffs early 80s.
I remember my ex-girlfriend and I meeting Bobby 15 years later when the Islanders had decided to finally retire his number, and he was with his family that same evening celebrating at Baci Cafe in Westbury NY after the on-ice ceremony earlier that same day at Nassau Coliseum. Classiest guy that you'll ever have the pleasure of meeting. Me and a few other fans were talking with him about his career afterwards, and one fan was so starry eyed he kept calling him "Mr. Nystrom", at which point Bobby smiled and gently put his hand on his shoulder saying "Son please, it's just Bobby". 😀😀😊😊
This overtime goal by Bobby Nystrom was without a doubt in the top five of the most memorable goals in NHL History. This overtime goal will be talked about for centuries. John Tonelli's pass was absolutely perfect and it was an outstanding play. It must be great to be Bobby Nystrom because he must think about this great goal every day of his life.
@@MrVictoria69 What planet were you hatched on ?...Samenko really ??...the hug me to death or sucker punch so called fighter ??...he never won a fair fight in his whole career if he couldn't sucker punch a guy he didn't win the fight FFS...Nystrom and Gillies both would have murdered Semenko.
The Islanders won 19 consecutive playoff series. No one else comes close. And don't forget they changed the format for the final in '84. Instead of the usual 2-2-1-1-1 they played 2-3-2. After splitting the first two games on the island the Oilers won three straight in Edmonton to win the Cup. Maybe it wouldn't have made a difference, but it would have been nice to have game 5 at home. A win there puts all the pressure on the Oilers to win game 6 in Edmonton or else face a game 7 on the island. Anyway, until someone wins 20 straight playoff series, those Islanders are the BEST TEAM EVER!!!!
Possibly. I think isles needed to realize speed of Edmonton had to be addressed....the younger defense dineen, boutiquer..didn't do much. The,isles might not of had much in tank after 4 cups. Sweep of oilers and Billy Smith goalie in 83, was utterly amazing.
Best hockey team I have ever seen... you could make a case for Edmonton however they never won 4 in a row... from 78-84 the islanders were the class of the league, could play any style you wanted, had one of the best money goalies in history, purest scorer, gillies would fight anyone... and probably the best center in the league without question... they would have beaten Montreal in 79 had JD not stood on his head.. 78 was a brutal loss...
They wouldn't have beaten the 79 Habs, that was the last great Habs teams of the 70's but they still Ken Dryden was still better than Smith and Resch,Robinson was still better than Potvin,Lafleur was still a great player.
I was 8 years old watching the game at my aunts house in Port Washington. It was hot and humid that day so I kept running back and forth between periods to cool off (no air conditioners in the house at that time). When Bobby scores the goal I could hear my neighbors screaming and then everyone came outside high fiving and giving ranger fans in their families shit lol
It’s funny how disorganized the first celebration was, I don’t think the Cup was on the ice for more than 3 minutes before Clark Gillies handed it off to trainer Ron Waske to head into the dressing room. There were so many fans/friends and media on the ice they couldn’t take a proper lap. It got better in 81, 82 and they especially savored the moment in 83 and it looked like every player had a chance to lift the Cup. I think the 88 Cup was the first “modern looking” celebration where fans that jumped on ice were corralled toward center ice where the security kept them away from the players.
@@dickslinger7979 the oil could score but kept losing when the ought to have won. Manchester Calgary LA NYI swept them shut them out. Oil lost games 8-6 in the middle of their almost dynasty. Two chances at 3 in a row and lost. Isles won 6 more series than Habs. Just the facts.
@@dzanier Well I was being facetious when I said Isles weren't as talented they were better then the Oilers absolutely because they won when they were supposed to and when they weren't supposed to. The 79 Isles were 6 players short of their championship team; namely Goring; Sutter Kallur; Lane Langevan and Morrow. Remember Sutter combined with Bourne and Brent Sutter for 70 pts in 83 playoffs. Also Isles beat Oilers 10 straight games in 83 84. 48-24. Goring had 40 sh goals career, and added 39 pts in his first 2 playoffs with Isles. Kallur was 36 goal man and had 1 more sh goals as Gainey in 800 less goals. Lane Langevan and Morrow were the 3 stay at home D who could clear the front of the net or overwhelm an opponent with a body check. Morrow owns the record for most OT playoffs goals 3 by a defenseman. And yes Rangers played great and Davidson has a career playoff and Billy Smith was 4 -1 in those playoffs.
They had the purist goal scorer of all time the deepest most balanced team who beat 99 10 straight games in 83 84 GF 48 GA 24. Oilers wiped the floor with Habs in 81 15 5 in 3 0 sweep. Then Isles crushed them 8-2 6-3. In their record win streak 15 W 97-35. You are right the whole league was weak for 5 straight years. You could look it up.
The Islanders turned out to be one of the greatest hockey dynasties ever but I do think they got a couple of lucky breaks in that game specifically Potvin's high stick goal and Sutter's offsides goal. This wasn't the Islanders fault just poor officiating by Leon Stickle and crew that day.
I recall the game up to a point. I was 18,a Leafs' fan---my albatross---and not really rooting for either team. Friend of mine is a Flyers' fan and he sure recalls those two controversial goals, especially the offside one---WAY OFFSIDE. But that's sports, that's life. Luck is always involved in some way.
Do you feel the refs sometimes has a bias towards one team over the other? .Like maybe deep down the refs wanted the Islanders to win that game 6 because of the Flyers reputation as a goon organization and the Islanders as a clean organization.

Bobby Orr cup winner probably is number 1..Nystrom is up there. This is 43 yrs ago
John Tonelli always seemed like one of the hardest working guys in hockey! I loved his style!
Honestly, he was that good.
GREAT CALL BY LEGENDARY PLAY BY PLAY MAN JIM ROBSON ON HOCKEY NIGHT IN CANADA-"BOB NYSTROM SCORES THE GOAL AND THE ISLANDERS WIN THE STANLEY CUP!"
They sure figured it out
They figured it out again, again and again
As Casey Kasem would say "Keep your feet on the ground, and keep reaching for the stars." In this case, The Stanley Cup.
Greatest team to ever skate 80-84 islanders, 19 straight playoff series wins .
Greatest team is pushing it...
They were scared shitless of Semenko

If the Islanders never win another Stanley cup it was the time to be alive.

Watched it with my dad, I was 15. I remember how most of the NHL was moving towards helmets, not Nystrom lol

What about Lorne henning?
Thor was one of the baddest men to ever drop the gloves. Granite chin, insane cardio and a mean streak a mile wide.
They we so great had more 5 goal games than Oilers during 5 final run. More 3 goal wins and far more than 50s and 70s Habs combined.
Joe MacIntyre what does that mean, they still were not as talented as the 70s Canadiens or the Oilers.

NEW YORK ISLANDERS EXCELENTNI !!!
In their first 16 series Isles have 3 games to 1 lead or better 14 times.
Isles were very very tough at home
All that means is they played some mediocre teams in the playoffs.
