I love Peter Criss, but he always makes excuses and just squandered his talent and opportunity in mid-1978 -well before the Dynasty album. He was a pivotal part of the band, but never takes responsibility for the real reason why he’s not currently in the band. Gene and Paul are strong-willed leaders (which every successful band needs), but they’d have never kicked him out had he stayed off drugs and stayed the course. Hell, even Ace hung around for 3-4 years after Peter’s departure..as bad off as Ace was, he still recognized his value in the staying power of the band. Until he didn’t, but that’s another story. Yeah... the reason why Peter didn't keep on playing after "Psycho Circus" was, among other things, he was unable to play the drums live. Even then he got mad about that! Gene and Paul are pragmatic to a fault but without them, there would be no band... and I think their friction is strictly business because every album Ace releases there's a guest appearance by Gene, at least...

Elton could get away with rolling around in a wheelchair and play piano for 2 hours. Drummers can’t get away with that.
Not all of that tour, maybe four or five. But not on all of that tour. Sorry, it was no other than Anton Fig and even on all of the Unmasked tour, until they announced their new drummer Eric Carr, to finish that tour out.
Peter Criss is a drumming legend period ! His drumming on the first 7 Kiss records speaks for itself. Was he a Peart or Bonham ? No he wasn't but his style gave Kiss a very unique sound and helped make Kiss a household name in the 1970's. Ask practically any popular hard rock drummer who was one of their first influences and Peter's name will be among them. There's only one Catman and everyone knows it's Peter Criss ! 🤘🥁🔥🤘
Peter didnt play on Dynasty because the producer thought he couldnt cut it. The rest is damage control. Peter seems like a nice dude, especially to fans. But he's protecting his ego here.
Bull. He didn't play on it was because he was too coked out to play. He was far more interested in getting high and brooding on a solo career. He says as much in his book.
With old guys like this that were drugged out back then, I imagine that they don’t actually remember how/why things went down the way they did. So all they can do is try to spin a narrative based on what they think their younger self thought at the time.
Peter was still pretty delusional here. It`s a well known fact that Peter was not able to play on Dynasty for different reasons. The car crash. Drugs and alcohol. Not rehearsing on the 2 year hiatus between 1977 and 1979.. Even his friend; Vini Poncia, who produced Dynasty was in on using Anton Fig.
Unlike Paul and especially Gene it seems Peter never took the fans for granted he is very appreciative and grateful. Let me tell you as an ex Pro retired drummer there is nothing wrong with his drumming he was the the right guy for this band trust me!
I loved and still listen to regularly the first album, Hotter than Hell and Dressed to Kill which have all 4 original members playing on and it’s been 50 years and Cold Gin is still my favorite song by Kiss
Even Ace says Peter lost it with Alcohol, and Drugs…I wish he would just tell the truth, he wanted out, he was bringing the Band down, just go on with your life, I loved the Originals, but Substance by two hurt the Band, it wasn’t Paul or Gene doing drugs, it was Ace and Peter, Ace owned up to his faults…every part of Kiss is Kiss, I love every member, it’s life, so members leave.
People have demons in life and both of these gentlemen fought them and won . They're both living great lives. Money isn't happiness. The original line up can never be compared to any line up in the band. Ace is still making music. People who have struggled with addiction and pulled through know this and understand.
Peter Criss is a frickin legend and just wants to be retired and live life with his wife!!!! The man is amazing and Paul and Gene still want to bash Peter and Ace, disgusting!!!!!! The impostors and wheelchair tour!!!!
It's embarrassing that Peter lies his ass off, without Trunk and no one else reacting! He deliberately sabotaged a few of the shows during the Dynasty tour, and he wasn't allowed to play on Dynasty and Unmasked because he was to drugged out and could not play drums. And for him to say he like Japan?!? He said to Paul during the reunion tour, when they caused mass hysteria in Japan, " I`m tired of this Hard days night bullshit".
I’ve thankfully never had a problem with drugs or alcohol but of the original lineup I like both Ace and Peter as both people and musicians the best. What I’m saying is that I have more respect for people who are honest about their problems, especially when they are able to overcome them. Both Gene and Paul never had a reputation for either drugs or alcohol but they are both two of the most arrogant and entitled individuals I’ve ever witnessed.
So you prefer honest drug addicts/alcoholics who jeopardized the band instead of arrogant, sober rock stars? Are you 15? Peter and Ace had problems, end of story. Stop idealizing... but Ace has a great solo career, what about Peter? Your comparison is evil, you have no idea how tough it is to be held hostage by your addictions if you think like that...
@@redacted2275The fact is, 90% of musicians are on drugs and are worshipped. Yet only Ace and Peter are called out on it. Bet it doesn't happen with the Rolling Stones.
So he says he he didn't like the colour change and his heart wasn't in it and that's why he didn't play on Dynasty and unmasked. But he stayed with the band and toured with them. Cmon Peter, don't insult your fans intelligence, Tell the truth for once and the real reason you didn't play which we already know. You were in a car accident and Poncia said you shouldn't play on Dynasty because your hands were injured. And then you purposely tried to sabatoge the last few shows on the tour in 79 by changing the tempo in some songs. Gene, Paul and even your buddy Ace has confirmed this.
Nobody in rock music is an angel. That goes for Gene, Paul, Peter, and Ace. It's even in Peter's book where he had a car accident and had to recuperate during that time. He also describes going to rehab and working to regain his chops for a while. In fairness to all, I would think Peter left Kiss because he was tired and his time to be in the band had passed. I think he just needed to sort himself out and do things at his own pace.
His heart & and soul not into it??? Let’s be completely honest, Peter could no longer play well from Dynasty onward. Even during the reunion, Psycho Circus, & Farewell tours his playing was lackluster at best. His timing was off & he had to use triggers on the drum set as he lacked strength in his playing. I like Peter and what he brought to the band but at a certain point he couldn’t play well anymore. It’s as simple as that.
He was awesome on the reunion tour, are you kidding me? He, was the oldest member of them and had arthritis badly, and still was focused and very sound!!!
@siberianhusky5874 At 49 years old and the car accidents as well genius, if your going to talk out of your ass, do it somewhere else!!! Catman the best, conversion over
@@iSiberianHusky Try dealing wih chronic pain and things that impair your physical abilities and see how you feel. Clearly, something is affecting your cognitive abilities.
Peter and Paul, at least in hindsight, have expressed displeasure with the Dynasty outfits, in their books. Dynasty outfits were the first KISS outfits to have "outside help" i.e. designer(s?). Before that they designed outfits themselves, experientially modifying/upgrading for practicallity as they went along. Also Gene's sketchbooks were full of ideas, some of which were used. (Gene's LoveGun chest chains and Paul's Love Gun chain boots were originally from the same outfit sketch. Gene's LoveGun/Alive II wings&shouder covers were originally 'spider-webs' in a sketchbook. So the earlier Dynasty outfit/s for Gene (there were 4 at least in total, not counting Unmasked) had Spider-web wings (plus the lizard skeleton on his back. Plus a red cape: rectangle 'superman' red cape; short 'flames' red cape; long 'flames' red cape; asymetrically 'ripped up' red cape)
Actually they said back then Peter was on his honey moon when they were doing the actual recording. That was over a month he & Debbie were out of the country.
@@shyman99 from what I remember there's A LOT of stuff that was not recorded on studio by Peter and Ace, and a nice chunk of Gene basslines too. Paul is the only member who plays in all the studio albums.
@@shyman99 In this case they trash them because they were not on board with the road Kiss took. Ace I know hated Dynasty and fought to go back to a heavier sound, and Paul answered that with Unmasked and Music from The Elder.
It's All about money and ego which is so true....very unfortunately which happens everywhere.Peter Chriss and Ace Frealey were and always will be the true original Kiss no matter what happened and no one can replace what is the real originality of someone or something Fact
Exactly I felt that one too. Similar to the lottery winners they took a 1-time payout and forfeited their future %. Who knew KISS would go as long as they did. They were all on the verge of splitting up back then and going their separate ways. Their stock was low but Peter & Ace sold theirs figuring it wouldn't go back up.
Are you people that stupid!!! Peter said in his book as well he trusted his lawyer, and by the way if Paul and Gene had a heart, they would write Peter and Ace a huge check, because they were founding members as well!!!
My uncle and one of my cousins went to see KISS in Chicago 1978 Alive II tour they played for 2 nights and he said it was amazing he got to see everything Gene spit fire and blood ace's smoking guitar and Peter just pounding away at the drums what if Peter and ace stayed nothing would ever be said today
When this stuff is brought up, it's never mentioned that there's songs where Gene didn't play bass. And there's songs where Paul doesn't play even rhythm guitar. Most of the time on Ace's songs, it's him playing all the guitars and bass. On a song like Hard Times, for instance, Gene and Paul aren't on that song at all. I know on Save Your Love, you can hear Paul signing backup vocals, but that's all he did on the track. And some of Paul's songs, like Love Gun itself and Sure Know Something, it's Paul playing bass. Oh, and as far as Peter not playing on most of Dynasty and all of Unmasked, the story I remember hearing was, that was Vini Poncia's call. I think by the time of Unmasked, Peter had already been fired, but on Dynasty, Peter was still recovering from a car accident, and Vini felt Peter wasn't ready for prime time, as it were. Ironically, Peter was the whole reason Poncia was working with the band, because Vini had produced Peter's solo album, and Gene and Paul chose Vini to produce Dynasty to please Peter (though I still say the fact that Vini had previously worked with Ringo Starr played into as well, giving Gene and Paul to get one step closer that upper upper level of greatness..."Hey, our new producer worked with one of the Beatles!").
@@88kwthomas I've seen him miss plenty. He's only gotten worse with experience. But even when he was younger his solo on Animalize Live is one for the record books.
I was 9, and Dynasty was my first concert. I will always love the Original 4, and it pains me to see so much disfunction in the later years. Back then KISS could do no wrong, and was the gold standard.
I never got to see Kiss with Peter, as Eric came to Australia in 1980. Peter was a brilliant drummer back then, and still is now. He and Ace were Kiss, and Gene and Paul knew it all too well… and that was the problem. Rock on Cat Man!!! 🥁
It's already been documented that the producer of Dynasty...Vini Poncia, didn't want Peter to play on the album. Peter's memory is hazy at best on this. Criss was hindered by injuries to his hands that he had suffered in a 1978 car accident. He did play drums of "Dirty Livin".
The four original makeup designs have been registered with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, with ownership and licensing rights are solely held by Simmons and Stanley. Ace Frehley and drummer Peter Criss], basically, sold it off , because they didn't think it was worth anything.
I love Peter, he is in fact part of the original lineup. But, he and everyone else need to understand something. First off, Peter if he would have just shown up for the rehearsals, left the drugs and alcohol alone. But also he sold his half out to the band KISS. So, it's all is fault that goes back to the mid 1976 when recording for the Rock And Roll Over album. Showing up to work on your time isn't cool or is not your rule to do, especially if there is a deadline for the recordings to make the album. It's a group rule, to show up when it's time to go to work. You don't make hours up for yourself when it's convenient for you. If the four of you agree to when to show up, show the f up. Plane simple. Peter you are one gifted man, and I love you bro, but, you have yourself to blame. This was a magical thing that the four you created, and you blew it.
Hey you're absolutely right because Peter flaked out. Him & Ace both were undependable and let the band and the fans down. They fucked up but i still appreciate their contributions to the original band.
Also agree here. Fan of the original four, Ace my favorite, and realize Gene and Paul have their own issues. But P&G put in the work (Paul especially in the 80's where Gene wasn't 100% committed to the band). I wish it would've worked out, that there was middle ground found, but that's life. The pointing of fingers is tiresome, but I'm happy the band existed and had their heyday...and we'll always have that at least.
Sad that the original line up couldn't continue! Drugs and alcohol didn't help. The guys are now 80, the party is over! Happy I got to see the original band during the reunion tour.
When Peter talked about dynasty notice he said nothing about his heavy drug use alcohol and that he was so messed up he really couldn't play drums that well anymore instead he wanted to say the band lost their edge and he didn't like the outfits.
I love Peter Criss and Ace Frehley. I agree with Peter about the Dynasty album. I went to that show and War Machine Tour with Vinnie Vincent and Eric Carr. I was disappointed that Peter and Ace weren't there the second time. I agree with the one caller who said he loved your voice. I really do too. Nothin' To Lose, Black Diamond ...man your vocals are so epic. Love you man. Never forget that the fans love you. You are the only Catman I will accept.
Don't forget Hard Luck Woman!!! Peter shined like a mother fucker on that, Black Diamond, Beth, Strange Ways, Nothing to lose and more!!! He had by far the best voice in the band!!!
In his book Peter seems to insinuate that their friendship ended when Nolan got into heroin ….I read a book on Jerry a few years ago, it was very sad. Him and Thunders, the ultimate rock and roll casualties….
Pete and Ace were/are Real Rockers. Stanlie and Chaim were merchants and try hards. Never liked either of them. Billy Squire looks like John Wayne compared to Stanly. F both of them.
he is BUT the last Question he didn't answer Honestly, "well there's lawyers & contracts" when in Fact he SOLD the Rights to his make up for a Large sum of Money at once.
Wow, some of these comments are a bit nasty and extreme, !! If you're a KISS fan from way back, its a bit messed up. We all know what happened, lets just get over it.
Was a fan since the Paul Lynde halloween special and couldn't wait to see them in Milwaukee in 79. Only, the show stunk. A lot of smoke, and Paul Stanley saying how "he;'s got this feeling" about 20 times and a very I just want to get the show over feel to it. I, as a senior in HS, was very disappointed.
Wasn't Peter in the process of being "let go" during Dynasty and that's why he wasn't involved as much? He wasn't involved at all in Unmasked. I think he got fired by then, but it wasn't made public. At the end, he was burned out and over it, and it showed in his performance, so they brought in studio drummers.
I always got the sense that Paul and Gene were exasperated with Ace, flustered with him and aggravated by him…. But never truly hated or even disliked him….but I get the sense that they really do hate Peter
I remember Bob Kulick saying he was walking out the studio and seeing Ace unconscious face down in a plate full of 2 day old nachos. I think that's probably a more accurate image of why Ace wasn't on the records.
Paul’s hatred for Peter is why they didn’t play in the RNRHOF. If they could have gotten Ace without Peter, Paul would have jumped on it. But Ace and Peter was a package deal. Paul is …….something
Peter didn’t play on Dynasty and Unmasked cause producer Vinnie Poncia thought he couldn’t cut it anymore. And Vinnie was right. Also, he was in the middle of being replaced in the band. What a delusional fool.
And Paul Rothschild didn't think Jim could cut it when The Doors were recording "LA Woman" and left the project. He could never admit it was one of their best recordings.
“Dynasty Tour” I was 7. I was gonna be 8 in 4 more days. Had every album. Knew every song because I listened to every album. I still have that tour book I got that night. Dynasty is great and it’s different. Sometimes looking at your collection I grab Dynasty. Not their best but I do like every song on it.
You can never measure your fame based on how popular you are in Japan. In japan you are famous waaay after you star faded everywhere else . It's kinda like a las vegas
He wanted out? Yet he’s been trying to get back in forever now. He just wants to get in on the gravy which is what he accuses Paul and Gene of. It’s all about money for Gene and Paul yet he cried about the contracts they gave him. So which is it? They’re greedy or you’re greedy? I have no doubt they’re greedy too but you blew your shot decades ago and now you want to slide back in like it still belongs to you.
I largely agree. But if money was the ONLY issue, then Gene & Paul would have brought Ace & Peter back into the band, because even if they paid A&P what they got on the first reunion tour (a mere $40k-50k per show, poor guys) the farewell tour would still be going on due to the money it would be making. It seems like G&P felt that the considerable extra bucks they would have earned wasn't worth dealing with A&P.
Being completely honest..I’m ok with KISS going on with other members..the reasons are endless money, hate ,disagreements musically..bla bla bla ..love Peter love ace ..and love guys who keep it going..it just is what is ..like he said “things happen man” ..who’s fault…who cares ..nothing anybody can do about it long live KISS …especially the original KiSS
KISS was really something before but what si it to say over years. To me kiss was about the 4 original members Gene, Ace, Paul & Peter. Thats what the fans are saying. The one who is the real Kiss fans. I was there when Kiss got the secund chance it was great.
I'm a kiss fan way back. Saw the end of classic kiss 79 .makeup. reunion the end of the road. I'm staying out of the band politics. I went because I love live kiss. Thanks
Okay- I thought it was funny that 2 or the first 3 callers were named Gene and Peter and when they took the last call I thought "oh, it's got to be Paul- and then it WAS! Lol. What are the chances?
Peter Criss is a Jazz Drummer that was hired after Paul put an ad in the Village Voice, looking for a Drummer. In countless interviews, Peter has Proudly stated that he is a JAZZ DRUMMER. And a Lazy one at that. If it weren't for Ace Frehley or Kiss picking him up from time to time for a Gig or two. Peter would be playing a Snare Drum on a Brooklyn sidewalk for coins.
You are wrong. Peter made it in two different bands. Chelsea and KISS. So that right there proves he was a great drummer and a big influence in music history. Get your facts straight!!!!!
Love Dynasty and Anton Fig. The fill he does coming out of the solo on Save Your Love completely annihilates anything Petey ever did. Ace 78 was the first taste of what 70s KISS wouldve sounded like if they had a real drummer. Pete is and always was a terrible, terrible drummer. Oddly enough, in 2024 I think next to Bruce he is the most likeable of the bunch.
Love Peter & Ace, but they made a poor buisness decision as to their rights with their image. Paul & Gene are sharks in the water and see the blood. They took advantage of their financial situations.
KISS were losing money and went through very lean, difficult times in the 90’s (as did most bands from the 80’s). They were broke. Not selling tickets or albums (like they used to). Paul kept KISS alive (Gene had all but abandoned the band for Hollywood). Peter and Ace were more than happy to take their money. Paul was determined to bring the band back from the dead. And now Peter and and are crying about it. They weren’t taken advantage of. It’s call hard work. Lots of it.
My mistake. The first person wasnt peter. Kiss got too big,not for their music, but the image. Gene and paul were trying to be rockstars and ace and peter were . Should have ended alot different.
I listen to kiss to hear Ace and see Ace. As long as he's playing and singing..everything is ok. Roket Ride, 2000 Man, Shock me, New York Groove.. I could go on all day.

The first 3 Kiss albums still stand the test of time, with Hotter than Hell being my favorite, all killer, no filler
Dressed to Kill also killer. The first three are classics.
I don't think the first 2 had a bad track on them. Dressed to kill didn't really resonate with me but I can appreciate what your saying.

It’s garbage music but it doesn’t mean that it isn’t likable. I like listening to it but not because I’m going to be wowed by what I’m hearing

Your exactly right!!! As a die hard Peter Criss fan, he said when Paul said a Bonham he will never be, Peter said yet I am in the same band as you!!!
Peter was a mighty drummer in the 70s and he is a amazing, real and sweet person
Peter didnt play on Dynasty because the producer thought he couldnt cut it. The rest is damage control. Peter seems like a nice dude, especially to fans. But he's protecting his ego here.
He had stopped practicing and spent his time doing drugs. It’s that simple. He just didn’t care for the work part of being a rock star anymore.
Dirty livin is a great track
Yeah but if you listen to the demo, it actually sucked

@@LROCKIN That was a different band
Exactly
If he was drugged up, then he was like 98% of rock stars back then.
@@dhenderson1810 Not a question of "if". He said he was in his book.

Look, I'm a fan of Ace and Peter, but don't act like they didn't screw up. Also, they're just as concerned about the money as Gene and Paul are.
Peter sold the rights to his image that’s why he doesn’t receive any money for it anymore and he should have answered the question truthfully
He has in the past I’m sure, not sure why he’s not saying so now ?
Eric Carr was by far a better rock drummer

It's embarrassing that Peter lies his ass off, without Trunk and no one else reacting! He deliberately sabotaged a few of the shows during the Dynasty tour, and he wasn't allowed to play on Dynasty and Unmasked because he was to drugged out and could not play drums. And for him to say he like Japan?!? He said to Paul during the reunion tour, when they caused mass hysteria in Japan, " I`m tired of this Hard days night bullshit".
❤❤❤ 😊love the originals. Can't say enough. We realize 50yrs. But there is something about them.
@@Vince_Tasciotti Agreed
It had nothing to do with the drugs and lack of playing ability?
His heart & and soul not into it??? Let’s be completely honest, Peter could no longer play well from Dynasty onward.
Even during the reunion, Psycho Circus, & Farewell tours his playing was lackluster at best. His timing was off & he had to use triggers on the drum set as he lacked strength in his playing. I like Peter and what he brought to the band but at a certain point he couldn’t play well anymore. It’s as simple as that.

My favorite outfits were the black leather and studs. I never liked the "Vegas" outfits.
Yep!
You mean dressed to kill ?

@@shyman99 In this case they trash them because they were not on board with the road Kiss took. Ace I know hated Dynasty and fought to go back to a heavier sound, and Paul answered that with Unmasked and Music from The Elder.
It's All about money and ego which is so true....very unfortunately which happens everywhere.Peter Chriss and Ace Frealey were and always will be the true original Kiss no matter what happened and no one can replace what is the real originality of someone or something Fact
Yeah that last answer was a really long and roundabout way of saying "I signed something I now regret signing/ shouldn't have signed". Simple as that.

It's already been documented that the producer of Dynasty...Vini Poncia, didn't want Peter to play on the album. Peter's memory is hazy at best on this. Criss was hindered by injuries to his hands that he had suffered in a 1978 car accident. He did play drums of "Dirty Livin".
Dynasty is a great album. Kiss were evolving. I think it is still pretty strong and not overtly sexual like some of its predecessors.

Love ❤ Kiss w/ Peter Chriss
Sad that the original line up couldn't continue! Drugs and alcohol didn't help. The guys are now 80, the party is over! Happy I got to see the original band during the reunion tour.
When Peter talked about dynasty notice he said nothing about his heavy drug use alcohol and that he was so messed up he really couldn't play drums that well anymore instead he wanted to say the band lost their edge and he didn't like the outfits.
