I really wish SKL showed up more often in SRW, because of the contrast between SKL and the other Mazingers. There is also a manga version called Mazinkaiser SKL VS. But I dont know if it has any major differences. I also love how, even though both of the pilots are really edgy guys. When the lady pilots get involved, they have an almost Tsundere-like reaction of "Hey! All of you get the hell off! We can handle this on our own! ...Not like we care or anything..."
Thank you so much for the video , i like how you were accurate at explaining but there's one thing i want to add , titsujin28 is the first robot but mazinger is the first super robot , actually the name and genre of SR was mentioned and created for the first time in mazinger , also he is the first to be piloted like you said he also the first to have weapons on him that's why mazinger is called the father of SR and he is the reason of the revolution in the mecca genre
I'm a pretty big fan of SKL, and it and Mazinger Z in general are some of the things that I deeply love about the mecha series, and I'm so glad someone else enjoyed it! Though, I do want to bring up that there is a bit of missing media when it comes to SKL. This description of some of the things that happen in the manga does contain spoilers for it. Mazinkaiser SKL is a midpoint in a 3 volume manga series. The main overall story is overall explained in it, though they did write the OVA to sort of work on it's own, and it does. You even get glimpses of Kaido and Magami's backstories in the opening, with Magami being a failed survivor of the manga's main villain's army, and Kaido being an ex-high-security convict. That's why Magami had the breakdown when fighting Garan. It's because almost everyone, at least in Garan's army and possibly Ira's, are clones as well, and due to Magami trying his best to reject that identity to live and die as his own person, that fact still haunts him. Garan and Himeko were able to take advantage of that to push him into a breakdown where he'd go berserk and leave himself open. Garan even calls him an "epirsunde"(think I mispelled that), which is "original sin" in german, which is what truly kickstarts it. And on Kaido, not much is really gleaned in on why he was convicted beyond him murdering an entire large yakuza family. I think it's implied that he did it because the clan was killing and harassing innocent people, but I'm not sure. He does absolutely hate it when his opponents hide behind human shields and use innocent people for their own gain, and in the manga, for as violent as he is on the field, he's honestly kinda goofy. He jokes around a lot and teases his allies, but he's not malicious about it with those he genuinely likes. Magami even picks up on it after he and Kaido start getting along properly as pilots, later honestly becoming rather close. Even Yuki is about halfway through her character arc when the ova comes around, because at first, she's just the lead mechanic of the Glen Falcon and Death Caprice squads. She's all nerdy and easily excitable at first, and she clearly has affections for Captain Scarlet. Hell, even Scarlet has a proper character arc throughout the first two volumes, and her death in the manga prologue of the OVA is a lot different, with her giving a recently promoted Yuki her scarf and blessing to pilot the Wingle before she passes away. It even shows part of what Kaido and Magami were doing after landing on Kikaijima Island before the events of the OVA. It's a damn shame that the manga has only really ever been translated into spanish, because it's a honestly genuinely fun read that gives a lot of insight into the characters and world as a whole, and I wish more people knew about it.
Oh! As a little correction: Kaido and Magami both *did* have a squad of their own, but they were wiped put when they landed on Kikaijima Island during a battle.
thanks for this explanation! i just started reading the manga (translated in french unfortunately but i can kinda figure out whats going on) and i pretty much agree with everything here. the manga really expands on the story and makes everything a lot more interesting, getting to see more of kaido and magami and watching them wreck shit is always fun. also getting to see more of characters we didnt get to see much of like scarlet is nice too. i dont know if its me, but i really enjoy this darker take on the mazinger world. its a shame we didnt get to see more of it, i would love to see the entire manga animated.
Didn't know who Go Nagai or Mazinger was until mid to late 2021 when someone showed me Cutie Honey. I can honestly say Go Nagai is the GOAT and Mazinger is the best super giant Robot. Just got Mazinkaiser SKL recently it is awesome.
There is a reason why we say that, if Osamu Tezuka is the father of manga, Go Nagai is the cool perverted uncle. The man is a legend and the true creator of the mecha genre as we know it right now (Tetsujin 28 was the first giant robot but not the first mecha, as those are piloted from the inside, that would be, as the video says, Mazinger Z), but expect a lot of fan service (or diservice, sometimes) and blood in his jobs. Or, if it is Mazinger, maybe just fanservice and oil from the robots looking like blood. Yeah, MAYBE, because there are some versions that have a lot of actual blood too.

Mazinkaiser SKL VS is an expansion on the story, taking place before and after the OVA. It even offers the origin story of how SKL was created.
