My first exposure to Wataru was playing Keith Courage when I was a kid. When I was 28 I stumbled on a Wataru video on Facebook and thats when I found out it was an anime lol. Thank you for making this video :)
Chou Mashin Wataru was also aired in the Philippines between 2000-2001, which at that time I was in my 6th grade (though there's not much material that exists, unfortunately.) I was hooked by then. Then years later, I saw the series again by way of an obscure Chinese-language kids channel that my local cable system carried. Good times!
I found out about Wataru thanks to Super Robot Wars. Even thought I have feeling somewhat disappointed with SRW lately... I still hope for those who havent lost their enthusiasm. That Wataru will return for another game.
Similar to you, I first saw this show during my trip to Hong Kong when I was a kid. It was dubbed in Cantonese and even had a intro opening with a different song. A very catchy song that I've haven't been able to find on the Internet yet.
Thanks for bringing this anime to our attention in the west! Fantasy mecha make for a really interesting concept, and oh my god the westernized TG-16 game is incredibly funny to look back on 😂
There's an English patch of Keith Courage that is more loyal to the source material than the trash we US gamers got. It's incredible and funny 😅 Nurse Nancy is hilarious. Every fan of Wataru should check it out.

This is a mazing history trace of Wataru!!!
AH! I beat the NES game without knowing it was an anime
My first exposure to this was Megumi Hayashibara singing "Pararira Paradise"
The chibiness kinda turn me off at first but it grew on me.
Where is this anime series available to watch?
