What a coincidence! I’m currently reading the same book “daily painting” by Carol Marine. Borrowed it from my local library a couple of weeks ago on a whim! I love the idea of doing one painting a day. It removes all the pressure and perfectionism from the process. Gonna be starting this practice soon…
When I saw your reference I immediately thought of Sara Sedwick. Julian Merrowsmith’s Postcards from Provence, Paul Foxton (here on TH-cam) and Patrick Byrnes have all helped me loosen up. And the time limit really helps! I usually give myself only one hour to do a painting now, and it’s nice to see the progress in each painting.
Oh yeah, those painters are fabulous! I learned a lot from Sarah, and she is the one who introduced me to Carol Marine's work. Glad you are enjoying working with the time limit!
The thing that has really helped me was being less stingy with the paint. I used to just squeeze out tiny drops to not waste any, then was needing to thin it out too much. I can get some nice juicy brush strokes only when I load up the brush well with enough paint.
This has been a big fault of mine, using a small brush and every detail. This winter I got an appreciation for Picaso, Pollack, and Kandinsky. Loosening up my painting styl1sjust spacked me on the face. I will never paint in the style of these three painters but loosening up will add life to my paintings through the brushstrokes. Thank you
Thanks Christina. I am now at that point where I’ve promised myself to start painting looser from now on. I’m sure it’ll take some getting used to. I need to reread Carol Marine’s book. I’ve taken two live workshops with Sarah Sedwick as well as a couple online. I love your paintings and always look forward to seeing your new work, especially the San Francisco cityscapes!

I have a question about your set up, in particular, how you secure your paint board to the back board. Do you have any videos that explain how you set this up? I’m loving your videos and didn’t even know I had already been following you on Instagram- I love your style. The simplicity speaks volumes. Your art is a big inspiration to me. I recently started oil painting and I struggle a lot with using my mediums, do you only use gamsol? My first time oil painting I used mostly linseed oil and it was a disaster :) tried out galkyd lite and having a hard time getting colors not to be transparent
Thank you! I'm glad to hear you are getting some inspiration :) For mediums, I think they can be super tricky. I find it is easy to use waay too much and the painting becomes a mess! For a long time I didn't use any medium, not even gamsol. Now I use a bit of gamsol in the beginning, but for the most part I just use the paint, no medium. If you are having issues with too much transparency, then I would definitely recommend not using any medium and seeing how it goes. The paint won't spread as easily and you will have to use more to cover the surface, but the effect can be super nice!
I don't want to be negative, but I cannot and will not watch any videos that are sped up. They actually make me dizzy and queasy. I like your channel. But I will pretty much unsubscribe to any channel that chooses to do that. It's just not necessary to speed up a video. Content creators can figure out other ways to get their message across. I am sorry to say that, but you just don't need to do that, ever.

What kind of glass palette is that and how do you keep it standing up without wobbling? Great demo!
