Pavarotti loved Martina and called her a great artist! She in turn adored him and said they had fun singing together. I heard them both interviewed years ago.
You are correct, the audience went crazy for her after that aria, both were in incredible form. Pavarotti was an artist who depended on the influence of others to bring out his full (and incredible) dramatic potential, Arroyo brought out the best him and vice versa, it's little wonder that Arroyo herself treasures this recording.
The power of the media? Could it not be that Pavarotti is simply outstanding here, and people are appreciating the incredible operatic artist he was before he got wound up in all the popera mess? I agree with you though, Arroyo is incredible here, and it's a shame she always got overlooked by people who preferred Price. She is among my favourite sopranos though, an incredible voice.
2 months later - more wow than before! This is anothere universe from ‘modern ‘ opera. Eat your heart out gelb - and nezet-seguin too,. Opera needs to reflect our times , they say. If this doesn’t reach you, worse for you!
Indeed, you can't just listen to this once. The number of times I've listened to it must be in the hundreds. The problem is that this duet is 10 minutes long, so when I finally come out of musical paradise, 10 minutes have gone - it adds up!
THis is so awesome I am actually out of breath. I don't think I have ever heard anything so thrillng, and I have witnessed some amazing performances. I SO wish I had been at this performance. !!
WOW!!! i always considered this duet to be one of the most dynamic in the standard repertoire. right up there with "Sarò la più bella... tu, tu, amore, tu?" from Manon Lescaut. and it has nothing to do with the high C sometimes sung here. it is simply very good music... it screams Verdi in all directions! this is also an extremely engaging duo; Arroyo was one of the most vocally emotive sopranos in my opinion, and Pavarotti was EXTREMELY good in the role. this video was a true pleasure.
Bravi ! Arroyo recorded Ballo in marschera for EMI.Her Aida and Il trovatore are not on a comercial lable. Martina Arroyo is one of The great ones. I love Martina.
I just listened to this for the first time! So sorry it took so long!! Absolutely magnificent performance from both Pavarotti and Arroyo! They were a perfect match....
Such a pity they didn't make any commercial records together. Short sighted record companies that had fights with each other prevented preservation of great collaborations on official recordings. I bet those two around those years could give us some extraordinary opera recordings, I Vespri Siciliani, I Masnadieri, La Forza del Destino are just a few that come to mind. No use to quote the availability of some alternatives, since this specific collaboration could've worked to great effect.
Thank you! It's extremely irritating. It's a duet, not an aria. No doubt part of what makes Pav sound so wonderful is he realized he had to bring his A game to sing with Arroyo that day who, no doubt, had just floored the audience with her preceeding aria. I think they sound wonderful, have excellent vocal chemistry and like only great singers can push each other to soaring heights. Brava Pav and Martina!
It seems like singers enjoy performing this duet. I've listened to several sopranos singing with Pavarotti and they all seem to be at peak. The harpist in this production was outstanding. I won't mention that the performance at the Centenial Gala is by far my favoite.
Ian caldeian: But you did mention that the duet on the Centennial Gala is your favorite after implying you wouldn’t. Evidently you can’t tell the truth.
Excellent. I must admit that my first exposure to Arroyo was on an episode of "The odd couple" comedy series. I was not particularly impressed and never bothered to listen to her again :-P But I've been reminded not to judge by first impressions because she sounds very good indeed here. Thanks for posting
This is wonderful. I wonder why Arroyo's performance on the studio recording with Domingo is so tame in comparison? same with her Forza del Destino. She must have been a stage animal - rising to the occasion in ways that her studio versions do not begin to suggest. She is the best of all the Amelias Pavarotti sang with I think. More vocal weight than Ricciarelli, shinging tone more suited than with Verrett. Both Tebaldi and Leontyne Price were a little past their best in their versions with Pav.
This time Pavarotti held the last note long enough, not as he sometimes did some years later when he sang this famous duet with Leontyne Price or Deborah Voigt, where he hide himself behind the lady's hair in the last top C.
It is unfortunate that Arroyo was always in Leontyne's shadow, though not by Price's doing. Arroyo was a spectacular spinto soprano who would have had a much greater reputation if not for the dominance of Price in the same repertoire. Neither of them are responsible for this and it can be seen as the real integration of opera that both of these great sopranos were able to sing most of their signature roles at houses like the Met, LaScala, Covent Garden, Chicago Lyric, San Francisco and many other houses.
Are you calling Miss P. fat and saying that Miss A. was always in her shadow? I’ve seen Miss A. many times and thin she wasn’t. There was plenty to see when she stood next to Miss P., believe me!!!
This performance was issued in 2 CD released in 1992 (recorded in 1971). The label: Buterfly Music (BMCD 022)Conductor Mackerras. Does anyone has it? I could not find it. As I live abroad, it is impossible to find it.This extraordinary performance was taped at San Francisco in 11/11/1971
@@davidartal4632 could you make a copy a send through email? I will adore! Maybe could be one act each time or even in order of not be much heavy. My email:: afirevripper@gmail.com I will be very grateful Afira Ripper
Ms Arroyo’s voice did not record well. The fullness and beautiful roundness of the sound could not taped. It had to be experienced live. Rysanek had same issue.
Forgive me if this has already been asked/answered. Do you have the complete broadcast of this BALLO production (i.e. with the missing bit excised from TH-cam uploads of the recording owing to copyright disputes)? Even the CD versions that I have were derived from sources with the missing chunk in Act Two. 🙄
No need to praise one singer by putting down another. McCartney is so much better than Jagger. Aretha is so much better than Mahalia. Sutherland is so much better than Sills. Who would want to do without any of them?
Absolutely gorgeous on both accounts. I feel privileged to have studied with Martina and to have been on the same stage as Pavarotti. Fantastic!
She brought out the best in him, which can't be said of others. He was always great, this is off the chart.
Pavarotti loved Martina and called her a great artist! She in turn adored him and said they had fun singing together. I heard them both interviewed years ago.
I knew Miss Arroyo while I was at IU. She was the sweetest, most fun and funniest Opera Diva I ever met. And man could she sing. I adore her.
Che meraviglia. Un giovane Pavarotti, fenomenale, ed una morbida ,sensuale Arroyo, Che bravura!
Had to listen to this another dozen times or so, just because I like it that much. Isn't TH-cam a wonderful thing?
great duet, fantastic, both.

At the height of his Powers, giving everything he had. She flooding the house with sound. It doesn't get better than this. Masterful! Thank you Verdi!
One of my favorite sopranos of all time....A huge voice that sailed over The Met.
Too bad she did not made many recordings. She was underated.
Great Voice.

magnificent--Arroyo the greatest spinto of her era and
Pavarotti singing gloriously. Arroyo is absolutely thrilling
Martina sounds fantastic! Luciano must have been inspired, and he was certainly singing well in 1971. Martina, I love this soprano. Wow.
Martina Arroyo is absolutely spectacular - what a voice! One of the prettiest of them all.....

Deux fabuleux chanteurs…quelle interprétation!!! Martina Arroyo sublime face à la véhémence amoureuse de Pavarotti… quelle merveilleuse chanteuse!!!
Ms. Arroyo owned this role hands down! Phenomenal!
Musica sublime! Viva Verdi! Straordinaria e veramente eccellente interpretazione dei due grandissimi cantanti! Toccano direttamente il cuore!
I can't think of a better way to spend ten minutes though.
Oh, this is good singing.
June 20, 2017- After listening to this, I would rank it all the equal to the Callas/DiStefano interpretation. They really bring this music alive!
In terms of the natural beauty and sweetness of sound, Madame Arroyo's voice is unmatched.

IMO she's better than Price. By 1971 Price had become unbearably hooty.
