Folks, I was there that night at the Met 100 Year Gala from which this excerpt was taken, and it was beyond words hearing this in person, to say nothing of being there the whole night for 5 hours hearing most of the greatest opera singers in the current world. Almost have no words.
In my humble opinion, the two most technically gifted singers of the 20th Century. The precision is stunning, but they don't play it safe, like so many modern singers; so it's thrilling.
Price forced her voice. She didn't have enough power for this role or a lot of another she sang. Sutherland and Nilsson and Callas were Verdi soprani who DID have the power to go above the orchestra
@@WelshHomo87Only partly true. Verdi’s middle-period heroines need more than power-they also require sweetness, dolcezza, morbidezza, and piani/pianissimi, which Price had plentifully. And a certain nobility. With those qualities, plus her beautiful musicality, she could touch the listener in a unique way.
@@liedersanger1and yet still holds record for longest standing ovation. Still love the others but definitely was meant for Wagnerian roles truthfully but is what it is 😁
What I enjoy most about this performance, besides the meeting of two vocal giants, is the intense concentration of attention and listening given Price and Pavarotti by the illustrious peformers behind them. No one loses interest for a moment of the performance, and quite a few of them get caught up in the thrill of the moment. Of course, quite a few of them are listening hard to pass judgement on Price. For contrast, watch them during the "Madama Butterfly" duet excerpt with Leona Mitchell and Giuliano Cianella. Despite the genuine appreciation shown at the end, there are many signs of fidgeting and loss of interest throughout.
I wish the poster had included Price and Pavarotti's walk-on. The two had a look on their faces that said "Forget everything you heard tonight. We're about to slaaaaayyy." And they did, they really did!
God; Pavarotti's acting is so transcendent! This is a guy who is so confident in the singing, he just lets it go with the emoting. I saw it in person, in San Francisco.
Can you imagine what it was like to go to the little church in Laurel, Mississippi where she was discovered? To hear THAT coming out of a rickety old choirloft right before the sermon? My God -- to try and PREACH after that? Must have been miraculous!
My friend's mother went to that church during that time and Leontyne played the piano. Seems the choir director's daughters were given all the solos. Leontyne actually went to college to major in piano! The powers that be quickly changed that.
Few if any sopranos have been as celebrated as Leontyne Price. Now, since more than a year, she has achieved the ultimate accolade: Leontyne Price stands alone as the world’s greatest living soprano. She has no rival.
Callas and Sutherland were and will remain Prima Donna Assoluta's while Price sounded like a goat half the time. The greatest living soprani were Sutherland and Callas, they had no rivals
@@WelshHomo87Absurd comment. He didn’t say she was the greatest ever. He said she was the greatest living soprano. Neither are LIVING. I certainly agree with him.
@@WelshHomo87Sutherland, possibly. I prefer the rich undertones of Price's voice. A matter of taste tho, I can understand why some would prefer Sutherland's brightness. But Callas? Sorry, not on her best day. Callas was a superb actress and emoter whose legend rests more on her tragic life than on her voice. Great diva and an icon, but Price was a much better singer.
And st that time we took such magnificent singing nearly for granted. On any given evening at the Met, it was possible to hear singers such as these now legendary stars. Little did we know then, that it was the end of a Golden Age that would never come again...
You absolutely hit the nail on the head. The current “quality” of singers in the stage worldwide is disheartening and sad. My misery is that I wasn’t old enough to have experienced any of these stars during their prime.
@@LaDivinaLover I saw Pavarotti several times in his prime. Absolutely stunning. Not a huge voice, but brilliantly focused and clear as a bell. And yes, very occasionally he cracked - but that was because he was singing with freedom and using a classic bel canto technique.
Pavarotti's depth, control and maturity comes right from the depth of his belly. He could take on any with him and make a star. A legend in male voice.
Magnificent! What blessed gifts and talent... Leontyne and Luciano. I have many wonderful recordings of Leontyne Price, and had the privilege of seeing Pavarotti perform at the Lyric Opera house in Chicago. Bravo! Two masters on the same stage.
Those were artists of the greatest magnitude. Incredible. You must know , in person as that performance happened, the MET was electrified with tonal and visual simulation which can not be captured on film. This duet was awesome in many ways: including the flaws!

Pavarotti was always an exciting singer. At the beginning of his illustrious career, his lyric voice had a special quality that made Pavarotti a special singer. Now when you listen to him sing with Price you hear the difference in the quality of their voices. Price's has a rich, full "ring ", Pavarotti's has volume but no "ring". Still, this duet is well sung.
