Tier Ranking the American Girl GOTY Dolls + My Doll Opinions | Chatty Deep Dive | Let's Chat!

- In this video, I get chatty about my opinions (some might be a bit SPICY!) on the GOTY line, and tier rank the dolls based on my own opinions and preferences. At the end of the video, I take a deep dive into the data on the features American Girl has used in the GOTY line. What is the most common skin color, face mold, eye color, and hair color in the line? Some of this data surprised me, and I'm curious to see how many of you are nerdy like me!
I liked the idea of a tier ranking video, but wanted to make it my own, so I hope you enjoy!
And YES I definitely need a new microphone... feel free to send me suggestions! The one I'm using picks up background noise quite a bit, so I'm sorry about that.

LOL I know, I wish I could see her differently. 😅It might help if I saw her in person. If I can find one for a good enough deal, I probably will end up getting her since she is special in that she was the first girl of the year.
I will say, I didn't think much of her until I ordered one to customize as a mini me for my mom, and unexpectedly, when I opened her box, I absolutely fell in love and she's become one of my favorite dolls I've ever had, and I'm considering choosing a different doll to customize to keep Lindsey as-is - she is SO much cuter in person, especially if you get one in good condition. If her hair had been really messed up, I think she would read as Chucky 😂

I never thought I’d like Lindsey either until I found one at a thrift store seeing her in person she’s genuinely one of the prettiest ag dolls ever I absolutely love her now I’m so happy to have her ❤
Aww I'm so glad! I actually have yet to see one in person, so it's very possible that would change my mind, too.
I received Kailey for christmas back in the day. I was a preteen by the time of her debut, so she remained in great condition. Now that I have daughters of my own, I can live my AG Wishlist through them haha. We own Joss, Kira, #55, and my girl Felicity. I'm hoping get Marie Grace for my youngest and Rebecca Rubin for my middle for this upcoming christmas. I low key want Corinne too, but due to limited space I'm capping at 8 dolls lol. We also own Kira's tent and it is the cutest playset ever.
I understand what you mean about living your wishlist through your daughters. I have two daughters as well, and I find myself justifying my doll purchases because they are for my kids too 😅 We do have so much fun together playing dolls.
Yes, oh my god, Joss’s stock photos are a completely different doll! I didn’t want her until I started seeing pictures of people’s actual Joss dolls and realized she has a beautiful little face! It’s like they made a prototype, took all these pictures, and then significantly modified the doll before actually releasing her. Similarly I think the stock photos for truly me 80 were really off, I didn’t like her until seeing her on instagram and realizing she’s actually gorgeous. Anyway, I love a good tier list, loved hearing your thoughts. I looooved the infographic, that’s extremely my shit, lol. I’ve been wanting to go through my own collection and look at that same feature spread. I’m also really dying at the chucky comparison for Lindsey because while I don’t really see it, I HAVE in fact been planning on dressing up one of my red haired dolls as chucky for Halloween.
Oh yes..you may be onto something with those stock images being closer to a prototype image. Their stock photos of Isabel Hoffman included some of hers with almost brown eyes at first. They just don’t do the dolls justice anyway. I’m so glad you enjoyed the video, especially the data portion! And I’m seriously beginning to get so hyped for your Halloween shoots!!

I had to laugh at the Lindsay/Chuckle comparison, even though I actually find Lindsay adorable. I don't have her, but wouldn't mind adding her to my collection at some point 😁 7:26

Yes make more data videos that was very fun to look it! I’m actually impressed that it’s a pretty even/representative spread of eye and hair colors. I think the skin colors need to be more diverse though, with more medium and dark to represent our country.

This was great! I agree with a lot of this. Chrissa was my first doll, so she does hold a special place in my heart and I do love her hair. I don't have her anymore, as I bought Grace and I eventually felt that one of them needed to go (and Grace is my mini-me and I love her freckles). You're right that Joss's stock photo looks NOTHING like any Joss they ever sold. I have no idea why they used that photo. I LOVED your stats at the end. I have just a few stats about total dolls released, and the Classic mold was used at least 78 times vs 27 times for the Josefina mold, so I was really surprised that the stats are so different for GOTY. SOOOO many of the Truly Me's are Classic mold, and historicals too. Definitely do more stats like that. Very interesting.
Thank you Beth! Those stats about the classic mold is so interesting, and the over use of it is why I was surprised to see that the GOTY line has another face mold that is more common. I’m also so glad you enjoy the stats like I do! I’ll definitely have to make more 🥰

I’d love to see an infographic about the gotys themes and color palettes or like interests especially given how many dancers there are and how similar nicki and corinne

Poor Lindsey. She's the GOTY of my older daughter's birth year and she is so unique in that she didn't have any expensive hobby or crazy talent. She just got to... be. And I love that. Her story reminds me so much of Junie B. Jones. And I really like Gabriela. I realize the dolls' stories *do* make a difference in how I feel about them, as I like Gabriela's books a lot. An exception might be Joss. I LOVE Joss but as someone who has been a sign language interpreter for over 20 years, I was let down by her books. Also, I freaking love the data breakdown at the end. Love seeing your professional analytic self show up here in this way!
Aww I know, Lindsey came out the year I got my baby brother. It was a good year! That’s so fascinating about her story. I have only read a few of the GOTY books, so I don’t have much of their stories/personalities in my head to base anything off of. I felt the least complex way to go about it was basing my rankings off of just the doll (and that’s another way my data analysis brain comes into play!). I also love hearing your perspective on Joss’s stories. That’s disappointing to say the least. I would have hoped they would have done much better! And I’m so glad you liked the data at the end. It’s interesting because I KNEW we only had one dark skinned GOTY.. but seeing that sea of light skin visually.. oof..

@@EvelynRoseAG Oh no! 😆 That’s okay, I didn’t take any offense. But yeah, I agree. Regular Joss is adorable, but stock photo Joss is on another level with those doe eyes and chubby cheeks. I think the same thing happened with Corinne!
Nice video! I really like Blair! I’m a fairly new AG collector. My first one I purchased was Corinne in 2022. I have three AG dolls Maryellen & Kit. I want to buy a doll of color, since I’m not so young lol, it’s enough. My 13 yr old granddaughter comes over and dresses them and does the girls hair. Thanks for showing these AG dolls ❤

I love love loved this video! This is the best tier ranking of the girl of the years I’ve ever seen. So detailed and precise so much information but straight to the point with everything, your channel is growing so fast and I’m not surprised what so ever. Definitely agree about Gabriela without her meet outfit. Is she number 46 or is she girl of the year 2017? And OMG I’ve always thought Lindsay kind of looked like Chucky, but was too scared to say anything. I laughed when you said that😂😂

OMG…great video. So well done. I love the graphics at the end. I actually have been completing a spreadsheet cataloging my dolls and one of the worksheets I started was tracking their stats (type, face mold, eyes, hair etc). I love the pie charts you used.
I adore Lea, Saige, and Mia. I also dislike the side swept bangs. The Nicki, Jess, and Marisol in my collection are kind of crusty and I need to give them some tlc. They were part of my daughter’s collection I got for her second hand. Weirdly, the dolls with some of the hardest hair to take of (Kanani, Lanie and Saige) seem fine.

@@EvelynRoseAG your video inspired me to finally spruce up my daughter’s old dolls. I started with Marisol tonight. I shampooed, conditioned and brushed her hair and I also flat ironed it a little bit. She is now in her stand with her hair up in large foam rollers. I’m not sure how or when it happened but I discovered that one of her eyes keeps sticking. :(
Aww, that makes my heart so happy to hear! I'm not sure if you're comfortable popping eyes out, but I have had this happen to a doll, and took out the eyes to give them a good clean, and it fixed the problem. @@EvelynRoseAG she reminds me of the character Rebecca Bunch from Crazy Ex-girlfriend which is one of my comfort shows! Especially when the character is shown back at summer camp when she was 16.
when i was doing my tier list i put Linsey, Grace and Chrissa next to each other (low category) and now when i look at one i think of the other. AHH. my sister has Chrissa, maybe i should get Grace/Linsey to make the triplets. If there was a lineup of similar dolls Julie and Isabelle would be my tops for twins. Also what is with all the B last names i have never realized until now?

Lindsey and Kailey are awsome, marisol is boring imo. All brown. Too much brown. Kavi is pretty lame looking, and so is the space one. Lea is the most beautiful.
It’s always interesting to me how some people find brown hair and eyes boring and I find them the most beautiful. I would bet it’s because I have light hair and eyes myself, so that feature combination is more “boring” to me. I agree about Lea though, there’s something about her that is beyond gorgeous.
