I never ot to watch Bonanza when I was a kid, after Walt Disney was over, we kids were shood off to bed. We tried peeking thru the bedroom shade over the bedroom door but got caught
I always liked this episode since the first time it aired when I was a child. John Larkin delivered such a nuanced, superb performance as Frank Medford. This episode is well-scripted, acted and directed. We learn a little bit more about Ben's past and his many friends and acquaintances. All in all, another fine episode. Many thanks!
The cartwrights were a FINE family!! Upstanding and loving to each other. It was so believable because of the fine acting, writing and directing. As a young kid I loved the beautiful way a program in color looked! At the time "Bonanza" was one of the few that were in color. The Old Wild West wouldn't have been that exciting and glamorous if it weren't for the likes of Bonanza, Louis Lamour, Clint Eastwood,John Wayne etc etc. I salute them all. yeeehaaa !
Had the colonel been honest from the outset, he still would have married the redhead, AND he would have had a much better reputation with which to kick-start his new life in Virginia City. Goes to show you the real value of honesty.
"Oh what a web we weave...." but confession of the truth always saves, and of course, Ben is there, as always, to give courage to his old friend. Well done!
What I like about “ Bonanza” is that every episode is different and one learns a lot of life lessons in these episodes ! It’s sad to thank all these actors are long dead now !
Nice episode. Colonel Frank is just a fabulous man. And his love Emily is just a beautiful and wonderful lady. A slight misunderstanding became the obstacle between them, but Ben Cartwright solved the problem wisely and they got each other and got married in the climax. Wonderful episode.Western Classic. One of my favorite.❤❤❤❤❤🌹🌹🌹😍😍

Dear @@LindaMerchant-bq2hp Years ago I learnt that Scotland has the most red haired women! I always thought that it is Ireland. Best regards, luck and health in particular.
Have you noticed all the stories and adventures that Ben have been on and explored. How did he make his wealth and built the Ponderosa? It almost seems like it was so impossible to accomplish.🥰👍
Maybe they got so wealthy like most of the people back then, re-invest and live off the land. Some of the richest man post Civil War bought a bit of land or stock and reinvested every cent into new land or stock while living off the cheap land. The only luxury back then was equipment, food, wood etc. was plenty, especially when it was your land.
People moved very frequently if they failed at something men like Rollo 800s-900s by most accounts started with very little if not nothing as he was not a son of gentry but he founded Normandy & sired William the Conqueror who would conquer England & the sons of Tancred (Normans but not Rollo's descendants) took Italy in the East. That is his legacy, but he didn't settle in Normandy until his 50s.
I have only heard it said that love and happiness could transform a plain woman into a beauty and I saw it happen today. (of course make up doesn't hurt either :) Such a very fine episode. A winner.
It wasn't pre civil war it was at least during the civil war as a couple episodes ago the plot was centered on the civil war and Joe's bride who came from a southern family and the anger this caused with Adam and the fighting in the family.
There were times in my life where I was as broke as the Colonel. And like him, I found myself talking my way out of some very embarrasing sitations--not always with elan....I have been to some places where I had to chew the coffee.

The colonel is a good looking man but has definitely dental issue to solve! What I noticed through all episodes many actors seem to suffer from the same problem; I wonder why : is the dental fees were so expensive at that time??
They didn't bother much about teeth back then. While I was a kid growing up, well after Bonanza finished airing, so many of my mates had vampire teeth and never bothered about it.

always confused why they set it in the 1860s pre the Civil War when the weaponry and feel is much more 1870s Golden Age of the West

Pretty much. unless trappers or disillusioned west coast gold hunters, things like that.
I heard the South mentioned being the American civil war was on
During the civil war north south and in the territorial states it was east west
Everybody came from the east. The only people who didn't were the Chinese.
