@deludeddesktopalien You are correct. For all we know, One of the creators of a great Cartoon Network show might die in a car crash in December this year. The key word being MIGHT. You never know who's gonna go at any time.
What I love the best about Richard Williams animation is the consistency of the characters' movement. Whether realistic or cartoonish, they move in a smooth, distinctly "Williams" manner.
@@realar CGI is not at all cheap. Especially for one-time-off commercials, where the 3D models will never be used again. In these use cases, 3D animation is ususally just as expensive as 2D
In the wake of Richard's death, I've been watching some of these old TV commercials, and can't help but marvel at the wide variety of styles he was able to master. Some of these designs were absolutely not meant to be animated. The Tic-Tacs commercial, for example, has things like visible folds in the clothing of its characters: details that are far too complicated to be drawn over and over again. But Richard Williams was a man who could convincingly put animated characters next to actual humans. No task was too great for him, and the world already feels a little less interesting for his loss.
His beautiful half-hour version of "A Christmas Carol" totally blew my mind as a 14 year old in 1972. And it is still just as amazing~~ faces, shadows, clouds and fog, architecture, ~~I had no idea animation could do that. And it starred the voice of Alistair Sim! Everyone who loves animation should see it.
A great bit of animation, we just don't see this kind of advertising anymore and I had no idea Disney and Fanta had a partnership but those where simpler days, when all Disney cared about was dancing ducks and talking mice.
Richard Williams, what you've contributed to animation is as magnificent as your art! You will be loved and remembered for your brilliant mind and animation!
What I loved about Williams and his crew was that no matter the project, whether it be a lifelong dream magnum opus or a simple commercial, he put his all into it and made it as artistic and beautiful as he could.
Agreed. Some of those old ad writers used to have a delightfully wry sense of humor. They knew that the best way to get people to remember you was to make them smile. I also like the aftershave one ("Remember, never for evil!") because the premise is just so bizarre. Also, the lighting and angles look really nice! That must have been so hard to animate, though, and those ad agencies expect you to work quick.
It sucks that commercials like these are rare nowadays. The last recent commercials I can remember that captured the same feel as the ads in this video were the Oregon tourism ads. If you haven't seen those ads, they're on youtube and they are definitely worth the watch.
I really like some of the animations where the animation literally morphs into live action seamlessly and naturally. It really shows how talented the man was.
A little late to the party, but Richard Williams will always have my respect as an incredible artist, I discovered my love of animation thanks in good part to him and his awesome "Animator's survival kit" and I will always be thankful for that. RIP a true god of animation.
I remember some of these, especially the one for roger rabbit ;3 so many memories of my younger self getting inspired by the works of Richard Williams.
Great animations, he was a Master. Beautifully smooth and excellently done. The Jovan Sex Appeal ad was an odd one, the pairing of the two items a Barbarian Warrior and Aftershave. It's certainly memorable.
@@InvisibleHotdog Not literally Hitler, no. Hitler was a competent and charismatic orator, whereas Trump can barely string a coherent sentence together. He's more like Reagan with more advanced dementia.
The only time I ever saw the Jovan barbarian commercial on television was during Saturday Night Live, back when it was worth watching. I wasn't sure if it was a real ad, or one of their over-the-top parodies... Had the same reaction when I saw the first ad for *Sudden Impact* (Dirty Harry movie) on SNL later... But then its ads showed-up elsewhere.
That art style with the nine lives should've been used for a modern day reimagining of Tex Avery shorts. Has that type of animation been used in other productions?
Lao-G ROTTEN it sucked and worse his daughter was the one who sold the rights to allow them to make a cartoon in the Tex Avery style but couldn’t legally use any of the legacy characters so they just tried to use original OCs do not steal
The ad from 1:06 to 1:30 was amazingly good and here’s why. In the advertisement about Sex Appeal, they say “Use it never for evil. Only for good.” To me, that’s an incredibly progressive statement to make even back then. On another level, it’s anti-rape. Bravo.
Older ads used to 1. catch attention 2. great music/narration 3. memorable 4. creative 5. conveyed the product being advertised. Now all ads are aimed at: 1. something stupid or outlandish to try to catch attention 2. forget to convey what is even being advertised
Yep. Games like super Mario 64 took this sample used & pitched it up to make the iconic noise that bowser makes. A few games later like super Mario sunshine did this as well, but at some point a different sample was used
Goddamn, this man was brilliant. Maybe the best artist to ever live. When tou make an exaggerated cartoon for Mens Sex appeal, you know he puts effort into everything.
Does anyone know where there is a video of just the tree animation? I remember seeing in the documentary on "The Thief and the Cobbler" that this was a rush piece. Something so especially majestic about that particular commercial.
I don't know if another great artist come up to be as good as he is, the society would care about that, because I've seen when someone dies only then people start to notice how great the person was.
The cat from that beer commercial looks like that cat from those Honey Smacks commercials. In fact: when I looked at the thumbnail for this video, I thought Richard Williams worked on a Honey Smacks commercial at first.
This guy could literally animate anything he wanted wtf
He learned from Chuck Jones and Milt Kahl, had a great team, and created his own formula by combining techniques
Imagine what he could achieve today!
Man I just wanna see all of this animation with hd transfers
@@GewelReal Well today wouldn't have been too long ago, he was still making projects at age 80 and released a short film in 2015.

I find kinda odd that this Richard Williams animated cigarettes ads and ALSO commercials about the hazards of smoking....
1. he's getting paid for making the commercial
2. times change
***** I know right?
Everyone was making ads for cigarettes back in those days... I'm just appreciating the animation
this days, now to earn money some artist have to make porn or cigarettes and alcohol games (social games)
None of those are his goals actually.
weird how high animation budgets were for commercials back then
Now they don't care, just put everything in CG.
