The word SATAY is 2 Chinese hokkien dialect words SA ( three) + TAY ( pieces) of meat. The Malay satay sellers did not have a name for the sticks of 3-piece meat until a malaccan baba ( son of an inter-marriage between a Chinese and a Malay couple) named the stick of 3-piece meat, SATAY. ( 2 pieces of meat plus 1 piece of fat).
