Nuju was the one Bionicle that sparked my imagination. Every single story that I have conjured up since I was 14 can be traced back to Nuju. The amazing thing was that back then I had zero knowledge of the Bionicle lore and only last year found out about it through this video. When I realized that the one toy that helped inspire countless stories in my mind was part of an amazing story as well I broke down into tears.

Funny thing is that Bionicle was not cancelled due to poor sales. I am doing my masters in Denmark and got to read one document that states that Bionicle's sales were more or less the same for the last three years in a row. They were significantly better than the sales of other themes but Lego wanted to reboot the story again to boost the sales under a new name: Hero Factory. This now makes sense as Faber has said it's all in the same universe. Hero Factory's sales were higher than Bionicle as Lego expected but the reboot took Bionicle fans out of the market and Hero Factory's sales went downhill after the second year. Then Hero Factory was cancelled and the connection between Bionicle and Hero Factory never happened.
Then came the reboot for Bionicle and the goal was to reboot the bionicle story and connect it with Hero Factory but Bionicle fans had either grown by then or lost interest in Bionicle.
The Hero Factory fandom was small, sure the figures sold well on the first two years but there was no strong connection between customers and the lore of Hero Factory.
That's the reason Bionicle G2 failed and then cancelled.
I wonder if Lego still has interest in this franchise as their own IPs are doing great and have more budget for the lore. I think that right now it's the perfect time for Bionicle to return as the lego brand has never been stronger in history. Even misses like Vidiyo didn't hurt the company beyond a scratch that people never speak of.

I just wanted to say that the 2009 bara magna soft reboot, though not at all perfect, was successful in bringing in new young fans. I and a couple of my friends, got into bionicle thanks to the Glatorian year(although my first were the Mistika) and and as a kindergartner at the time, bionicle became a huge part of my childhood. And thanks to TH-cam and that legendary “2008 Bionicle Retrospective” video I came to learn about the story of bionicle and became obsessed. But yeah, I just wanted to stand testament to the fact that the glatorian years was the best move lego could’ve made even though it didn’t pay off.

These two worlds always come to my mind in a pair, nothing matches how I felt entering the ruins in the 2nd mission, and watching those little Bionicle videos setting the scene.
Another one that made me feel similarly was Brute Force for the Xbox (And the original xbox itself!), the environments and designs are absolute classics to me as well. I notice it left such an impression on me to this day, a much more recent game I play to this day, Warframe, frequently gives me strong nostalgia. Stuff like the Banshee Prime trailer just makes me feel like a kid again...
Even just stuff like the mountain from SSX 3 filled me with a kind of wonder, I always loved stuff that felt alien to me. It's raw landscapes mixed with those glowy futuristic rails penetrating the blizzard etc., I can't put it to words. With all that and more, such as Megaman: Battle Network, I'm so lucky to have been a kid during that age. I love how much was left to my imagination a lot of the time

33:40 Just for reference. One of the oldest references of other makuta is from the second movie. When Teridax is trying to lure Vakama into joining him, he says "Join me and my brothers". There's also the Makuta Nui set, which implies that there are other makuta, because a "Nui" is formed from 6 beings of the same species, like the Matoran Nui.

    • @Makutros
      @Makutros 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Makuta Nui is more the antithesis to Mata Nui. Its Teridax's secret beast form and thus does not really allude to there being more Makuta. The quote from the second movie apparently at first was a random creative choice. But it eventually sparked the idea of there being a brotherhood of Makuta.

It hurt that The Lego Movie listed Bionicle as one of the sets "they don't talk about." I loved this series, simply because it was epic and had a nice style.
Edit: I realize they actually said "and a bunch of others we don't need to mention." My point still stands though. The lack of representation beyond that is saddening. I mean, they gave Ninjago and a bunch of licensed properties a spotlight, but not Bionicle? Like, not even just having Tahu or one of the other recognizable Toa a cameo in the Master Builder meeting?

14:22 I just realized something recently, Metru Nui is one giant computer. Ta-Metru is the heat sink and maybe even the RAM, Ko-Metru is the cooling unit and the Knowledge Towers could be something like the data drives and chips, Ga-Metru is either a secondary CPU or the program library, Onu-Metru is the hard drive or mass storage device, Le-Metru is probably either the circuit boards or power unit, (maybe both) and Po-Metru is probably the graphics card or even the microprocessor, possibly even some moving parts like the cooling fans and disk reader. That would probably make the Coliseum the main CPU. The entire city is one big computer that functions as Mata Nui's brain, and if you look at it from a birds-eye view, it even looks like the inside of a computer. That's brilliant.

When I was a kid and Bionicle first came out, my brother and I got Onua. Our best friend had Pohatu and a few little McDonald's Tohunga figures (which I didn't care for at all), and I remember thinking how impossibly awesome it would be to own all 6 Toa. As I grew up, I went through the customary decade or so not caring much at all about Lego. Then when nostalgia came knocking in my mid-twenties, I bought all 6 Toa - it was an itch I needed to scratch. About a decade later, now in my mid-thirties, I randomly felt the need to collect all 6 McDonald's Tohunga, as well as the 6 Turaga. Neither of these were things I thought I'd ever care about. It's weird how nostalgia works, coming in waves, and how our memories changes the way we value things. I'm an incurable collector, especially of things that remind me of the innocent desires of my childhood self.

Bionicle, the LEGO theme has has had the most impact on my life. While I was alive for most of Bionicle's original run, I was only old enough to buy and understand the story of the last two years. However, as a kid, many of the toys I got were bought from garage sales and other used toy places, so I also owned a large amount of the 2001-2005 sets. I didn't know their stories, but I owned many of the posters and they would inspire so much curiosity about their world. All I knew storywise besides 2009 and 10 was the original three movies, so I would make up the backstories of many of the sets. The bohrok were always my favorite. Two of my friends and I would come over nearly every day of the summer and we would build our own self mocs. I don't know why, but we would always call them our "dudes". Like," Let's build a bad guy for our dudes to fight," or "I'm going to give my dude a new weapon". We would always buy Hero Factory sets and upgrade them with our Bionicle parts and just call them Bionicle characters. We eventually drifted apart. I actually saw one of the friends after G2 had ended, and he asked me if I knew that Bionicle had came back for a while and we talked for a while about some of our Bionicle memories. Fast forward to the present, and I have gotten back into Bionicle and have read the entire series. It was amazing to see the actual stories of the sets, and I was suprised at all things that I had guessed right. I am now buying a lot of the sets that I had always wanted as a kid, and I am glad to say that Bionicle will be an amazing memory from my childhood that I will never forget.

-Reidak could plot and outwit his enemies, he just doesn't want to since he can adapt to any method used to defeat him anyway.
-Avak can materialise the perfect prison to contain any enemy just by thinking about it, also a gunsmith capable of building weapons of ridiculous firepower.
-Hakann can shrug off extreme heat and can attack enemies with mental blasts, most notably Zaktan who realised the pain could get no worse and drew strength from that thought.
-Thok can bring almost anything to life (like the Piraka Stronghold) and is just there for laughs and the mask of life, forming secret alliances with other Piraka so he can betray everyone with ease.
-Vezok prior to his division into Vezok/Vezon was the most cunning of the group, a master ambusher, who could've taken the mask for himself if Vezon hadn’t happened.
-Vezon himself could not die under any circumstances while cursed, and later he became entangled in a lovecraftian Suicide Squad.
It’s like every bad anime villain powerlevel cranked into overdrive. No surprise that they had to be written so they couldn’t stand even sharing air with each other, if they had even a sliver of collaborative skills, they’d have curbstomped everyone.

I was introduced to bionicles when the piraka were villains, and I fell in love with the universe. Specifically the uniqueness in each character, and how their design heavily leaned into their respective element. And that individualism has helped form my entire thought process throughout my life. Nowadays I love the idea of a team filled with unique people, each doing their separate unique part.

It really shows that even to this day, _Bionicle_ can still ignite inspiration for other people.

You made a good point about the sound design. I never realized it before, but the sounds in Bionicle ads (and, by extension, some of the music for those ads, too) shaped a lot of my perception of the toys, and in some cases are the most memorable part of the whole experience. There's a little 30 second animation that plays when you put in one of the mini CDs that came with Bohrok-Kal and Rahkshi sets, and the electronic music for those 30 seconds is the heart of my nostalgia for Bionicle in general. Playing that 30 seconds of audio is enough to get me thinking about Bionicle for the rest of the day.

Hearing the flowing water and ambient creature noises you hear when you start in Ga-Koro still makes me feel like I’m there, all these years later.

So, hear me out, several ideas for a reboot of Bionicle:
The entire original storyline, but completely in system. All the important characters, locations, and events remade into affordable sets, like the Toa Hagah, Bohrok nest, and Matoro's sacrifice.
Each year would consist of two or more waves representing two or more years of the original run; i.e. [2021 - 2001,2002&2003], [2022 - 2004&2005], etc.
The minifigures would have a custom head piece with a connection port for kanohi, sorta like bike helmets and visors.
The line would conclude with two massive sets of Mata Nui's and Teridax's robot bodies fighting, with their respective soldiers and warriors included at their feet.
But the most ambitious part of the whole reboot would be an animated retelling of the whole story, with semi-regular episodes instead of yearly movies.
This idea might be way too big and crazy to ever be approved, but I think it would be a balance between the slimmed-down 2015-2016 story and the gradual reveal of the original plot, but to an audience who've never seen it before.

Like, keeping the general design and silhouette of the characters, but updating them with modern touch ups like better knees and elbows, slightly more detailed armour and masks, maybe even actual hands to hold their weapons rather than just having them stuck in, stuff like that.
Hell, they could even come with a golden version of their mask, and maybe even some silver armour and their Nuva masks and tools that you can swap around, effectively making the Toa Mata and Toa Nuva into one.

Regarding the Mata Nui Online Game: I only discovered Bionicle properly in 2008, and learned the previous years' lore through BionicleStory. In *2011*, I finally found MNOG - and was absolutely blown away. The incredible atmosphere, the gorgeous music, the point and click style perfectly complimenting the sense of mystery... Coming up to two decades later, it still stands out as a fantastic way to induce intrigue and present lore. Not only that, but it gave us a reason to care about the stakes too. We get to see the everyday life of the villagers under the protection of the heroes, to walk many miles in their metallic boots. That backdrop really put the importance of the main quest into perspective.
Your remarks about the mystery of those original years is totally spot on - but perhaps inadvertently, MNOG provided a delightful contrast between the unknown and the familiar, especially after year one. You could be hunkering down against a bohrok invasion in Po-Koro, or playing with flowers on the shores of naho bay, and these places would feel like little islands of familiarity in a sea of mystery. That contrast made either side even more special, somehow.
Thank you, for doing this. All of this. It's been a fantastic experience ✌

Bionicle was a HUGE part of my childhood, Legos were my favorite toys, and then Bionicle came out and combined action figures and lore, with my favorite toy. So, Bionicle was my favorite line of all time. The sets looked amazing, fun to play with, the comics and lore were incredible, like a movie, and the story seemed like something beyond a kids toy, it seemed adult, which as a kid made it even cooler! So creative, so cool, and fun. Bionicle shaped me.

Bionicle has always been a major inspiration to me as a writer. when I was young I remember seeing the previews for the mask of light frequently and saw the movie once but I don't remember it much. and the mysterious quality of it is still inspiring to me today. just the mysterious quality of the world is very captivating. Thank you for doing the series of lego rewind I really enjoyed it.

The one thing I really remember about the movies was Teridax’s voice. That was hands down the best casting choice they could have made. Lee Tockar was incredible as Makuta. He gave him such a chilling and creepy voice. I remember it creeped a lot of fans out. I still find Tockar’s performance chilling even now.

"I'd like to imagine him channeling one through each hand", that is EXACTLY how it worked with Takanuva's half-shadow form. It was literally him controlling Light with his left hand and Shadow with his right. The corruption also caused him to feel darker urges which grew increasingly harder to resist. His corruption didn't stop halfway, it merely slowed down. Mata Nui was dying, but Takanuva was slowly turning evil.
I always envisioned the G2 story as one of the many "alternate dimensions" that would be accessible through the Kanohi Olmak (Brutaka's mask). Imagine Vezon showing up in the background for a section, crushing one of those living bear-traps and leaving again.

I grew up with bionicle as a kid. I was introduced to bionicle when a set from Knights Kingdom i wanted wasn't in stock, my mum bought me Kongu from the Ignika line. I was hooked from that day, everyday i used my pc time as a kid researching the lore and older figures. I still have the original bionicle game for pc and remember when I was in Sweden (I'm Norwegian), my dad bought me and my brother "Bionicle Heroes" for the pc. I was so excited to get home and play it and i have over 500 hours atleast on it. I recently bought myself a house and still use my bionicles as decor for the house. I was 12 when the sets stopped comming out. I was devestated and honestly wish i was older when it came out so i had money to buy the sets

It's what got me into lego, what got me into building and creating a story like your version. Lego is like gundam. You can build and customize. But sadly Lego didn't execute it as well as gundam.
