This Seiko SARX055 is what used to be called (up till the 1960s) a 'day watch'. A day watch is a watch one would wear during the daytime to work or to other daytime activities. In contradistinction to it is the 'evening watch' or what is today called the 'dress watch'. Evening watches were typically gold, thinner and with a leather strap. Both the 'day watch' and the 'evening watch' are distinguishable from the 'sports watch' which today proliferates as divers, pilots and field watches. These distinctions are very old fashioned. There is much to be said for their revival. Hope this is helpful.
Just bought one. It’s really quite something and I really think it’s as close to Grand Seiko you can get without going Grand Seiko. The finishing is fantastic, the titanium is really beautiful, the dial is just wow. Even the hand set is just angular and simple and sharp. I’m very happy.
Frost dial definitely is the better name for it. I think Seiko is killing it lately, feels like the have turned into overdrive for releasing unendless new models
It’s not a dress watch. Wha? everyone needs a dress watch! Of course you can wear this causally. Beautiful piece. I keep coming back to this video every few months cause. The temptation is real.
Have had mine for almost 2 weeks now. Wearing it right now, too. It's stunning in person. So light. Definitely can wear this both dressy and casual. For those in the US worry about getting taxed on these, I've now ordered two watches from Gnomon Watches on Singapore (authorized dealers of many different brands) and did not get dinged with taxes. Plus free 3-5 day shipping (ordered mine on Thursday night and got it Monday morning). They use DHL. Again, absolutely beautiful watch. Really happy with the purchase. Great video.
Amazing looking watch! Seiko has always been my favorite brand since i can remember myslef. Absolute work horses. My father has a Seiko and a Citizen from when he was my age when he got his first real job, still ticking to this day and still look beautiful. I support the Japanese on this part, They do their best to build you a Damn good product with a reasonable price.
Agree with you Rob. This falls into the 'dressy sport watch' category for me, which I love. Similar to the SARB033/035, Datejust, Seamaster Aqua Terra, etc. Love to see another vid posted, always makes me excited to watch!
It is not just a dress watch. Can easily dress down as well as up. That dial. Seiko definitely has the edge on this and other uniquely well executed dials. It may be interesting how this frost dial may patina over time, if it will.
Just got one from the cheapest Japanese Store, Yamatonadesiko. And, comes with Global warranty, which is important if the watch needs to be regulated, in case of high fluctuation in accuracy, With the warranty, Seiko does it for free. Kazuki, what a wonderful guy. If his price is not the cheapest, which is rare, he will tell me. I just write to him for any watches i am interested in, even antique ones or, nice Credor models, which is difficult to buy outside Japan.
Horology is a hobby. We make it our hobby cos it's fun and it makes us happy. A good hobby is one that we can share with many people, so it should not be expensive, and within the means of the regular people. The objective of horology is making time-pieces that tell a good time minus the marketers so that it's maintained at an affordable hobby for more people. That's what we mean by fun. For me, a good time-piece is one with the simplest mechanism and robust, but, able to tell reasonably good time. You need not service it unless it's broken. It cost almost nothing to regulate it if need be. Enjoy.
Dear Rob, For a thousand dollars watch, I would go for Seiko Baby Marine Master and turn this elegant Dress Watch into a Diving Watch. Remember your famous sentence: (If you are just buying your first and only Seiko dive watch, then the Baby Marine Master is what you are looking for).
All Seikoholics, why pay more when you can pay less? in the beginning, when I had little experience buying from the Japanese online stores, I paid a lot-lot more. a store listed this watch at 159,000 yen, then slash it to 123,000 yen, giving the impression that you are given a big 23% discount. The actual listed price of this watch is only 130,000 yen, and I bought it for 100,000 yen. There are many similar cases like this. If you buy two of these, the savings you get can buy you the newly released Pepsi Sumo, which is what I actually paid for. Let's keep away from the unscrupulous retailers, and help each other find the best bargain. Let's keep the prices competitive so that all of us can have more watches to enjoy. It's an honorable duty for those who have the experience to light the way for the newcomers. Horology is not just for the rich. Seiko makes it possible. Let's keep it that way. Seikoholics unite!
I agree, not snowflake like at all. At least not typical snowflakes. Definitely more silver frost. Another Tube called it washi paper... Which maybe valid, but up close it looks like fiberglass or spears of ice. "D" maybe a revision number. Often used in denoting revision number
Awesome watch. Only thing holding me back buying this is the titanium. I just do not know how the titanium will look after a few years. Can you polish scratches out and will the titanium turn grey over years use.
Titanium is more difficult to polish (than steel) and it can be scratched. But, this watch has a specific protection on the titanium. So, i suppose that if it's brand new and you take care = no scratches. But, if it already has scratches = very hard to fix it....
LOW COST HIGH HOROLOGY. I always buy my watches with these three principles; Precision, Aesthetic, Value for money. Aesthetic - If you put lipstick on a rose, it will look funny. Zen is part of Japanese culture. Zen just simply means nature. So, we see Zen in Seiko. Seiko draws onto nature and people for beauty. We can see that in the Snowfrost and many others. Precision - Zen also means simplicity. All we have to do is just to look at the Japanese chopsticks and the way they eat, and we would understand. Perfection is keeping things simple, modest, enjoyable, and within the means of everyone. It has got nothing to do with status. The magic lever is a simple and efficient mechanism and is used in the whole range of Seiko's mechanical watches from the lowest series to the highest, apart from the GS. Anyway, here is another Unspecified Chronometer. I have mine at plus 2-3 sec/day. I wish all my Specified Swiss chronometers have this accuracy. To elaborate on precision from my overall experiences with Seiko, I reproduce here my comments on Patrick Marlett wonderful review on the beautiful Dragonhead GS SBGR017, which I also so happened owned; I bought the Dragonhead Grand Seiko SBGR017 purely for the looks. I have this ahead even of my ever so gentle Snowflake. There are more beautiful ones which I have seen from afar, though. There is the Blizzard, the Green Peacock, the Night Sky, the Diamond Dust, The Eichi, the Fugaku, etc., which are all not so easily available, and not so affordable, but, still, we can appreciate their beauty. As for the mechanism of the Dragonhead, it has the 9S5x, the least decorated of the 9S series and no more in production. In the watch forum, you can read that this caliber also has the magic lever mechanism, similar to those found in the Rolex and is said to be less stable. This is true of this watch, and true of the few Rolexes that I owned. Seiko got it regulated for free and it's now running at GS time, so it's OK. Seiko has since improved on the Spron, the main and balance hairsprings, and now we have upgraded versions, the 9S6x, and the 9S8x. This is just talking about precision for precision sake. We need not be obsessed with it. If we need our watches to be close to 100% precise, go for the quartz. There's the 9Fxx, 4Jxx, and 8Jxx to meet our needs. I see that there are views that Seiko should use a higher caliber like the 8L35 or something to replace the 6R series. I beg to differ. It will only bring up the price. My 8L35 caliber was off a bit when I bought new, and, again, I had to send it back to Seiko for adjustment, and now it's giving me GS time, so it's OK too. Considering that it cost many times more than the 6R, then it's not so OK. More often than not, the 6R series has chronometer accuracy or thereabouts, usually not more than 10sec a day, especially the 6R21/24/27, which are more stable. 8 out of 10 of the 6R 21/24/27 in my collections has chronometer accuracy right from the box. The few of the 6R15/21/24/27 that are off a bit, I got them regulated easily. Even the 4Rxx can be regulated to chronometer accuracy for just a token if you want to, but, it isn't really necessary. After all these are more of fun watches rather than precision watches. More ever, If we have a number of watches and take turns to wear them every few days to have fun, chronometry is not really a factor. If it's a higher caliber like the 8L35/55, it has to be sent to Seiko. It would require adjustment instead of regulating, and it can cost you an SKX after the warranty period. Value for money - Zen also means Truth, and one who honors this truth is a Samurai lead by a Shogun. The principle meaning of Seiko is also truth. We can see that Seiko is very transparent and modest about their accuracy and generally understate their specifications. Let's keep Seiko as Seiko, and not push Seiko to become Grand Seiko. Let's keep Seiko for the regular guys. Seiko is Tuna, Samurai, Turtle, Cocktail, Sarb, Presage, yet, it can keep GS time. That's fun. Seiko is fun. GS are just show-pieces, but, a very good one though, and value for money too, comparatively. But, there isn't that much fun in a GS. Still, I have quite a number myself, and I am very pleased with them too. The GS are expensive to maintain. Servicing has to be done by master craftsmen in Japan, and it can cost us a Sumo. Even the 7C46 can only be serviced in Japan. I enjoy all these beautiful creations; the Turtle, the Sumo, the Samurai, the Tuna, the Monster, the Shogun, the Transocean ( it has a case that resembles an ocean liner ), and the Kurashikku. Perhaps, soon we will have a new version of the Ashtray. So much fun. Thank you, Seiko. You are already more than a 100 years old. We have so much to learn from you. You have given us so much to enjoy and so much to talk about. I cannot think of another that gives me better values. I dare not ask more of you. Seikoholics, the fact is that my 350 dollars SARB 033 is as accurate as my GS hi-beat straight from the box Yes, it does not have the same prestige as the luxury watches, but then, prestige is subjective. A friend showed me his new 4000 dollars Tag Heuer chronograph. I told him this watch has a Seiko's mechanism which Tag probably bought for a couple of hundred dollars. I do not know what modification they did to the watch, but, the second hand was sure shaking quite badly. The following week he bought a beautiful GS 9F for less than 2K. These are just some examples for examination. From my experiences, all this chronometers branding is just a big hype, like most products in the market. Great watch and great video! That's how a review should be done. Picture and sound are impeccable! What equipment have you used to make this piece Rob?
I have a couple of Seikos with the 6R15 movement, a Cocktail Time and a Presage Sarx33, the latter being pretty close to this Baby Grand Frost. This will make money IMO.Seiko sign the crown give it a few years and pull it but we shall see.Tudor royal 1,7k this is a better watch in my humble opinion.
I see these as sports watches as opposed to dress as they do come with 100m of water resistance and a metal bracelet. I feel they are called "dress" watches because of their lovely dials and handsets however, as far as I know a dress watch can't jump in the pool🤷🏽♂️ Where do you land on this topic?
I don’t think having more water resistance takes it out of the dress watch category. It just means it’s more durable. It doesn’t even have a screw-down crown. The bracelet it comes with (which is amazing) just means you have more options and versatility. I see this watch as more of a sporty dress watch than a dress, sport, or dressy sport watch.
wear the watch you love no matter what the style. nobody is going to point out that your wearing a dress watch but your dressed casual lol. i wear my two tone yellow gold Rolex oyster perpetual date with a matallica shirt and camo shorts and nobody has said a damn thing
This Seiko SARX055 is what used to be called (up till the 1960s) a 'day watch'. A day watch is a watch one would wear during the daytime to work or to other daytime activities. i guess Im pretty randomly asking but does anybody know a good website to watch newly released series online ?
@Marshall Zane I use Flixzone. You can find it by googling :)
@Marshall Zane i use FlixZone. Just search on google for it =)

That is a total stunner. Imagining it sitting next to my Alpinist is just too much ..
Frost dial definitely is the better name for it. I think Seiko is killing it lately, feels like the have turned into overdrive for releasing unendless new models

I just purchased this watch! I am in shock how gorgeous that dial is
Stunning dial, another home run for Seiko! Seiko Frosty!lol
i have never been so much in love with a watch. Unbeliavable.

Frost dial is the correct nickname for this beauty. Oh, nice video!
for me, is a daily watch, and because of you I am about to receive mine ;) thanks, and congrats for your amazing channel
Amazing looking watch!

So beautiful... the Seiko Frost.
This watch is just stunning with a capital S. Looks soooo gooood.
"D" movement has a revised balance assembly, because there were frequent problems with "C" ones
Gorgeous. Saw it on Bruce's video too. Glad you also did one. A tad big for me, but 40mm does do a good job of showing off that texture.
Great vid! Great frosty watch!
this is gorgeous. absolutely gorgeous. better/more interesting finish than some of GS' offerings.
Agree with you Rob. This falls into the 'dressy sport watch' category for me, which I love. Similar to the SARB033/035, Datejust, Seamaster Aqua Terra, etc. Love to see another vid posted, always makes me excited to watch!
Man! I absolutely love this. If I don’t get the new baby turtle this one is on my radar! Let’s call it Frosty!
It is not just a dress watch. Can easily dress down as well as up. That dial. Seiko definitely has the edge on this and other uniquely well executed dials.
It may be interesting how this frost dial may patina over time, if it will.
Its really a Baby Grand Frost ! :) nice silver white dial
I definitely wear my 057 casually. It’s a watch you can dress up for or not imo
It just looks good regardless

Went with the 057. The ink black dial is special. I’d have to see this version in person to make up my mind if I like it or not
Gorgeous Watch
As always Rob, splendid review mate...!
Really?! Nobody notice the gap between the dial and the date window frame? 5:25
Damn, that is gorgeous. I want.
I'm a stay at home dad to four year-old twins... The watch just reminds me of the movie Frozen. Not a bad thing.
Mark Silgalis The 'Seiko Olaf' :p

Best aesthetic fit and finish for 1k
wow what a beauty!
There is a similar looking watch in steel with and upgraded movement. The SJE073J1 has the 6L35 movement. I believe the price is about $2000.
I agree, not snowflake like at all. At least not typical snowflakes. Definitely more silver frost. Another Tube called it washi paper... Which maybe valid, but up close it looks like fiberglass or spears of ice.

Hi! Can i buy 2824/2892 and change the movement for this watch?
All around watch!!!
To me.... this piece can be worn as an everyday watch. I just ordered one a few minutes ago. It goes with a t shirt and jeans or with a suit and tie.
Awesome watch. Only thing holding me back buying this is the titanium. I just do not know how the titanium will look after a few years. Can you polish scratches out and will the titanium turn grey over years use.

This watch compared to the Grand Seiko SBGA387?
That is just pornography

gmshadowtraders I thought it was named after the founder
Yes, Patrick, it's named after the founder. It also has this meaning.
Amazing watch I wonder what a Swiss company would charge for something like this?
P
Great watch and great video!
That's how a review should be done.
Picture and sound are impeccable!
What equipment have you used to make this piece Rob?
I have a couple of Seikos with the 6R15 movement, a Cocktail Time and a Presage Sarx33, the latter being pretty close to this Baby Grand Frost. The accuracy of the Cocktail is about +15, with the Presage amazing at about +2. I find the rotor on both noisy, but especially on the Sarx33. Very rattly. Do any other owners of the same movement have a similar experience?
Jesus, that looks great
I use titanium for my glasses frames, strong and light. I also have a Citizen super titanium, but strangely enough, I prefer the weight of a steel watch.
I’m wearing mine now, prefer it over my omega collection. Let that sink in!
Niko Covich that must be one crappy omega collection you have there
The Frost, I wouldn't call it a dress watch personally. A watch for any occasion, yeah probably.
I have a small wrist about 6.3 inches wrist, and I am considering buy this watch, is this too big for me?
Like it much, but I love the cocktail version more
This is out of this world, and it needs a blue strap.
I am actually selling it with a blue suede strap. I never wore this watch. am trying to sell it on eBay dbsandman305
I'd call it the Seiko Liberace
Beautiful watch..how much?
Is the chapter ring machined or plastic?
Seiko frost!
the most stable version of this movement is the 6R15D and 24j rather than the c 23j
Nice dial but I prefer the dial on the new Fuyugeshiki series of Presage. It looks more natural ....
If no Presage text in dial will be nice
Just realized Rob doesn't know what "polarizing" means...lol
This will make money IMO.Seiko sign the crown give it a few years and pull it but we shall see.Tudor royal 1,7k this is a better watch in my humble opinion.

I don’t think having more water resistance takes it out of the dress watch category. It just means it’s more durable. It doesn’t even have a screw-down crown. The bracelet it comes with (which is amazing) just means you have more options and versatility. I see this watch as more of a sporty dress watch than a dress, sport, or dressy sport watch.
too big for dress watch, but nice looking.
Perhaps Seiko finds that most people buy multiple casual watches, but fewer dress watches?
The edbassmaster would tell as u tell: Just Look At It!!😨
Haha, true. Just look at it.
Have you even mentioned the fact that this watch is made in titanium? I would say that's pretty important :(
Yes he did. Go to the 2 minutes mark.
Hoho, I didn't even hear it for some reason. Thanks.
Hmmmm looks better than aqua terra. OP 39 or this one
OP39
Is the dial white or grey?
When you have a dial like that, 40mm is OK.
wear the watch you love no matter what the style. nobody is going to point out that your wearing a dress watch but your dressed casual lol. i wear my two tone yellow gold Rolex oyster perpetual date with a matallica shirt and camo shorts and nobody has said a damn thing
Trevor Hutcheson nothing could be cooler than a Metallica shirt and a two-tone Rolex
Jingle fest bracelet, uuugh seiko at it with the damn bracelet all the time
Maybe the crown and stem of the sarx is superior to the Alpinist's? There shouldn't be any difference in the movement persay.
I thought they call it paper dial?!
Em nó quá đẹp.
a 40.5mm watch can't be a dress watch if you are not a big foot. :)
It's not a dress watch, more like smart casual.
The Presage branding on the dial is incredibly irritating.
