Hi, thanks for comparison. I tested the PR7 and the Husqvarna 701, I do agree with your conclusions. I got the 701 for better feel in position, and technical terrain ability. The PR7 pegs I felt them too high, as said in your vid. It happened I had to drive the 701 on motorway for 500km, with a rally tower and comfy seat, it was easy riding, only to take care of range between gas stations. The 701 consumed only 4liters/100km at 110km/h, so nearly 300km range on a tank. On technical dirt road it can go up to 6lit/100km, so 200km range, enough in the Alps or Pyrénées. The 690 enduro shares the platform with the 690 SM. Given your impressions, it leads me to conclude believe the setup of the bike is much more important and your PR7 is much less enduro style than the original.
Really interesting take on it. I've never looked at these bikes as road bikes really but I can see your point. I certainly would put the 690 in the same class as my EXC.
@@Braapncamp I also agree with Tusken, having owned a 701 before, the PR7 is a much more capable bike off road, once you've set the suspension sag etc to suit you!!!! The 701/690 feals more clumsy on technical single track. Also the new '21 PR7 with the Athena ECU has such a different power delivery than the older Delphi model, in full power version its a game changer... much more like a heavy enduro bike than a light adventure bike..
@@nickandcaron We have a new dealer over here in Sweden which have had testtride events at many different locations latest week. Wanted to buy a new bike this year after 30y riding my DR750 BIG. The PR7 was top on my list…, partially because I watched your videos 😉. But… never got a chance to do a test ride. In seven months. Anywhere in the country (Switzerland). Don’t want to even know how spare part supply is when they not even get any new ones shipped to their dealers. Which is why I finally decided for a stripped down BMW Scrambler instead. Certainly even less „dirt“ and maybe not even a real „adventure“ bike, but great looking, fantastic engine, great on-Road performance and still okay-ish performance on gravel mountain roads. And mechanics and spare parts pretty much everywhere on the continent easily available.
@@GregVillalobos sad but true. And the small ones are suffering most. Hopefully things get better, soon. If life ever brings you to the Swiss Alps, let me know and we can compare your PR7 with my NineT Scrambler 🤣🤣🤣
Great review Greg. I have a 2020 690, and find it to be the perfect bike for me in Colorado. Some days it's a small, big-bike, others it's a big, small-bike. I go on multi-day ADV rides with my friends on their big bikes, and I ride aggressive trails with mostly the same guys on their 500's.
Tried to buy a PR7 but couldn’t get a delivery date, bought the KTM 690 fitted now with rade garage rally fairing. I think I possibly underestimated how good the KTM actually is, it is a properly quick capable bike.
Main "issue" its that, you need to make alot on mods on the stock 690. Not so on the PR7, and at the end that turns out to be a huge price diference And with all the new European laws, i wanna avoid "extras" :(
Thank you so much for this video. I'm a GSA 2011 owner searching for a second bike for adventuring, living near the Alps i got lots of trails but also always a 80 miles on tarmac before climbing. I tried a caballero 500 (I've seen you video) but definitely small clearance and suspension. 690 seems to me too aggressive and I need a smooth machine. Some friends did some rallies on pr7 and still satisfied. I think I'll go for it. Thank you! ( Husky 450 it's a great bike! sadly no more husaberg in the market)
After years of no off road (old ex enduro rider) I did the Kielder 500 on a rally pro, on road tyres, saw you there, enjoyed myself so much, the thirst is back. This review really helps, I also need to do some searching on the 501, I'd be interested if you guys have a view there too.
The curious thing about my GoPro footage aiming downwards on your PR7 is that's it's the opposite of what I'd expect. I would've expected the more aggressive bikes to have that body position.
Very interesting comparison Greg, and possibly very useful for me. I think the PR7 would suit me better than the others being more road focused and if I read you correctly a bit ‘softer’. At 73 years old I think my days of ‘hard’ riding are behind me……. For interest 3 of my mates are off to Morocco tomorrow-2 x Cagiva Elefants and 1 x 600 Honda. We usually go to the Pyrenees every year to ride the trails in which case there would be 2 x Montessa 4 Ride, a CRF250 Honda, and the last time I went I took a Bultaco 250 Frontera-which played up and broke the clutch cable……. I am currently not riding since I came off my pushbike and broke my hip 4 months ago-not a problem but no motorcycling for me until next year.
I would take any of these bikes and be happy -we are truly lucky to have such choices (assuming supply lines right themselves). Given my size (short legs, long torso) and skill level (sub-optimal), I'd prefer the PR7, then the Husky 450 (or newer FE 501s) and then the powerful 690 (whiskey throttle would end me). I appreciate the money savings on having the PR7 come well equipped from the factory - a rally tower, real hand guards and skid plate. With the savings I would add heated grips and a rear rack and still have a lot of money for luggage. The 690 is a great bike, but the new FE 501S is quiet and only 240 lbs., and a proper trail bike. I feel I could work on the simpler PR7, which is something I enjoy as a limited mechanic , whereas I'm intimidated by the more advance features and electronics of the KTM products. And the PR7 is pretty, while the KTM design language makes no sense to me. My road bike is a 1976 BMW R900 with the toaster tank, black with white pin-striping. It's gorgeous, even with its scratches and patina.
Rupert recommended I give this a watch as I might be looking at the 690 now. I’m off to thank him now 😃 Really high quality content so thanks for that. It was a pleasure to watch. 👏
Hi Greg, Have often enjoyed your TRF articles. This is the first video I’ve seen that you’ve produced, thoroughly enjoyed watching you, you have a really natural demeanour and that made the video really refreshing. Great to find a straight talking host sharing honest thoughts about the illusive unicorn bike too. David (AKA new subscriber)
Tested the 701, I had to rev it to much, missed the low grunt. It was also very nervous in the front end. Considering the AJP but it now costs 15.000 euro compared to the 701 that costs 13.000 euro here in Sweden. I think thats pricey compared to what you pay for a T7 for example.
For me looks is very important, sounds trivial, but I wanna love the look of it, sometimes more important than performance - I wanna throw my leg over it, I also wanna bling it up and make it my bike. The jury is still out for me on the PR7, I've got a bit of an issue with parts, I can go to my local MX shop and get a clutch lever there and then for my CRF450L, not so easy with the AJP. Have you ridden the 450L with the power mods done Greg? Got the vortex ECU on mine and it's a massive difference from stock, well more like 50bhp over the standard 25bhp, very different to Dave's bike when you tested it against your EXC. I do think the road miles argument is a little daft, didn't Dave ride his CRF450L to Morocco, obviously caught the ferry to Bilbao, but he did it. And most bikes you can get a better after market seat, so you can be comfortable, mini fairing or towers help with the wind, so just about any bike can do long miles. Anyway, thanks for another great vid, inspirational as ever !
You def have to work harder to get parts for the PR7, but the community is pretty helpful. I've not had a proper go on a power up CRF450L. You just need to ask yourself what you need the bike for I think. :-)
Maybe I missed it but price and cost of ownership are serious factors for many potential buyers. I imagine a bike costing considerably more is probably going to at least be better suspended, and that makes a huge difference. It's all very well saying one bike is better than the other but it's hardly a surprise if there's a 20% or more price difference. So, for my money, bike comparisons aimed at the consumer should include the economics.
Your choice of bike all depends on your choice of riding ( simple ) I’m currently looking at a T7 as I want to ride distance to get to off road plus I like to camp 🏕️ so T7 for me 👍 Coming down from a Multistrada.
Quick question here, around the 19:30 mark, you said you'd choose your PR7 over a Tenere 700 for 'road work'? Could you elaborate a little what you mean by that, or was it just mispronunciation? The T7 has the same twin (admittedly tuned differently I'm sure) as their MT07 road bike. Which tells you something. Its heavier which is almost always a good thing on tarmac, more stability and less wind wobble. Has smoother grunt from twice the cylinders. Everything about it screams 'better on the road'. If you'd have said you'd choose it over a T7 for off road, I wouldn't be surprised, but 'on road' caught me off guard, what did you mean by that? Great video by the way, loved every minute of it. Cheers
I think you also need to mention it depends what you want to use it for. If you are adventuring in Morocco or Mongolia, you will want a different bike than riding single track in the UK, regardless of your riding styles and preferences.
Good point. I guess we are all only talking from our own experiences. One day I will ride in Mongolia and then be able to understand what works there and not just in the UK. 🙂
Great video Greg. I saw no mention of the slipper clutch and blibber on the 690 vs the PR7? There was also no mention of whether it came with a cush-drive which is important for logevity.
You are correct. It's one thing I didn't talk about. I did notice the slipper clutch when riding on the road. Not so much on the trails. I need to do more research about the cush drive on both the PR7 and the 690.
Hi Grag, met you at the Kilder 500, great to chat with you even if I loaded your book wrong!! Mine jammed 3 times. Anyway really enjoy your vids and your way of shooting! Some great black and white shots. Keep up the work. Ta Ed. Ps would love a shoot a ride sticker.

@@OFFroadOFFcourse I love your channel, but the meh just sticks... Would you prefer the PR7 over the modified 690 you've tested? And just looking at comfort on the road, what do you think? I am leaning towards the 690 and upgrading with a rally tower...
@@nickcsuki8123 hey Nick! I'd go for the 690. The PR7 is a bit easier to ride i think, but the quality/support is not the same. I dont think AJP is really ready to serve a global market (i've learned that after i published my video). Besides, the KTM will keep its market value, the AJP probably not :o
I have pr7 also and i like it more than 701/690 for ergos. suits me alot better anyway. easier to handle, power delivery on point, more stable bike overall also imho
I would like to know more about the road capabilities. Say 130kph for hours. I mean, unless you are transporting your bike with a car you will need to get from A to B on it and motorways are unavoidable. If you want to spend as much time as possible in the fun stuff transport comfort is essential in my opinion.
My PR7 will comfortably do 80mph with it's stock gearing. Push to 90mph for overtaking. Prob not more than that though. The seat and ergonomics are comfy for me, I've happily ridden all day on the motorway. But, it's still a single cylinder so it's never going to be as smooth as say a T700.
Hi Greg and folks, thanks for informative video - which bike has the best ergonomics for tall guy (190cm/6'3'')? I wonder what are experiences of taller riders with PR7 / Husky 701(KTM 690, GASGAS EC700).
Another interesting video Greg, think I’m a similar height to you about 5’8”, how did you find the seat height on the 690, could you reach the ground with both feet. Was thinking of a 690 as my next bike. Cheers.
100% could not get both feet flat on the 690. Tippy toes. But then I can't really do it on the PR7 either. I think you just get used to hanging one leg off as a short rider. My first dirt bike was a 450EXC which are not exactly short!
I think you summon it up quite nice there Greg... what are you gonna use it for, but the problem is, we all want to use the bike for more or different stuff than we actually use the bike for 🤣 I see so many people on extreme setup with rally towers, and navigation system that could take you to the moon and back. But how hard is it to navigate trough your own local area. Always enjoy your videos, and yes... I sit here with a notepad and take notes 🙈🎥 Cheers
Nice one Tomas. It easy to get carried away with tricked out bikes, but then again that's what keeps the industry moving. A lot is aspiration rather than reality. Now if only I could find a cheap retro bike with modern performance and reliability... ;-)
Great video, really well shot and raised alot of really good points. Curious what you thought of the differences between your older modified KTM 450 and the newer Husqvarna 450? Looking at a 450 Vs 500 and as you say it is pro's and con's of each and what type of riding you are doing and what you plan to do going forward.
Riding Rupert's FE 450 made me realise that my 450 EXC is ageing a little. Overall his felt a lot smoother. But the geometry etc is still very similar.
Hi Greg. Excellent comparison -v informative especially the PR7 which i knew nothing about. I'm a short (5'7) GS 1250 rider and looking to do a few more TET trails that the GS struggles with(i struggle with..) Can you recommend a couple o bikes woth looking at for the vertically challenged, as a 2nd bike?
Hello Greg good job with the videos by the way! I was wondering if you have ridden other AJP models such as the 300/500? I am thinking about the 300 for single-track enduro competition over 50 Class C. Dealers for these bikes are few and far between here in the States unfortunately.
Two bikes I've considered to replace my CB500X Rally Raid and although I ended up not buying either, I'm pretty sure I'll own both somewhere in the future. Amazing video, like always! /Rui
Interesting Greg and a brave video to make went from my 500 exc to the 690 they do feel very similar 6000 miles in only problem I've had lost the digital speedo turned out to be a faulty abs switch. Just came back from riding the TET in northwest Spain would of been happy to ride either of the three bikes I just happen to have the 690. @@gnarlybadger690 No cush drive (although the newer 450 and 500/501 models have a cush in the clutch). There is a bit of dampening in the bars (PHDS), but it only really softens the high frequency vibrations.

Hey Greg, have you ever ridden the SWM Superdual by any chance? I feel like that is another interesting bike and would sit in between the PR7 and the Ténéré 700. It's also quite a bit cheaper than both of those (around €4000 I believe) which would go a long way towards a decent set of tires and fuel for trips! I currently own a 690 with rally fairing and it's great, but to be honest it is a bit aggressive for trail riding and I even prefer it in rain mode for more control. Reliability is so-so at best as well..
I liked your video , but I don't think a 690 would make any sort of enduro mount i have never seen any other A Grade rider in Australia use one as and enduro mount, its more trail / adventure bike. Ajp is a very cool bike thou.

Fast forward a year...Gas Gas 700, £8000 will get you a new pre-Reg one('22 plate), bargain compared to the others! Currently looking at a SM one as I have spare WP forks with a radial caliper mount, quick change over to a trail bike!
The PR7 is a lovely bike for small, patient people. Just realised we neglected to chat about electronics: the quick shift, ABS, and MTC give the KTM another road boost. I'd still prefer to ride a 690 to Spain than a PR7.
3 washers on the rear abs sensor disables all the electronics on the 690 (can still use mode 1 or 2).. I have the dongle fitted that keeps a very small amount of the rider aids functioning, if required. 👍
Honestly, the PR7 comes pretty well kitted out. I would happily not have the tablet and save a few £ to spend on the nav I do want. The OEM exhaust is prob a little heavy and could be replaced with something lighter. Other than that I really don't know where you could obviously save weight on this bike without sourcing a lighter engine.
@@GregVillalobos we are getting an exhaust made up which might be a little lighter which will also give some different end can options, next time your in have a chat with Martin, might be an opportunity to be a test mule 🤣 we also have some new SPR ranges in next time you are passing, kettles always on ✌️

He also visited our event SKOG with his PR7 (there were guests with them as well). Definately looks like a game changer in popularity over here, advriding friends are ordering them now 👍.
@@Braapncamp Thats great to hear...just shows this bike is all things to all people, to Greg its a light ADV bike, to me its a Heavy enduro bike, to others it will be a dam good Rally bike also.......AJP have done a fantastic job with this bike!!!!!!
Excellent (as always)! Happy that I made the right/best choice 5&1/2 years and 24,000 miles ago, buying my 701 (The Bismarck)! Has never let me down. Has taken me to the Italian Alps and back. Loves the abuse I give it, as an oversized Trials Bike! 😂😂😂👍
Alps trips sound great 👌
Wanted to buy a new bike this year after 30y riding my DR750 BIG. The PR7 was top on my list…, partially because I watched your videos 😉.
But…
never got a chance to do a test ride.
I know that many factories have had a tough time of it this year. Lots of supply chains have broken down due to Covid.
@@GregVillalobos sad but true. And the small ones are suffering most. Hopefully things get better, soon. If life ever brings you to the Swiss Alps, let me know and we can compare your PR7 with my NineT Scrambler 🤣🤣🤣
Great video comparison and commentary, thanks for sharing!
Thanks!
The AJP looks like a good design, but the high price puts in directly in competition with more established and better known bikes.
Riding in CO looks great 👌
That's it, I am going with the 690, this is how I feel about it and what I want from my next bike! Thanks!
Great video, interesting analysis and thoughts. Also pretty honest.
Nice, and well done.
Congrats
Glad you liked it!
Tried to buy a PR7 but couldn’t get a delivery date, bought the KTM 690 fitted now with rade garage rally fairing. I think I possibly underestimated how good the KTM actually is, it is a properly quick capable bike.
The 690 is a grin machine for sure. I was banging through the quick shifter on the road and it felt great.
Main "issue" its that, you need to make alot on mods on the stock 690.
Not so on the PR7, and at the end that turns out to be a huge price diference
And with all the new European laws, i wanna avoid "extras" :(
@@x_Paulo_Nogueira_x I agree the PR7 is the finished product out of the box, the rally tower on my 690 was expensive

That PR7 is a SWEET machine!
New 690's are pretty smooth these days
After years of no off road (old ex enduro rider) I did the Kielder 500 on a rally pro, on road tyres, saw you there, enjoyed myself so much, the thirst is back. This review really helps, I also need to do some searching on the 501, I'd be interested if you guys have a view there too.
I've not really got any experience on the 501 I'm afraid
The curious thing about my GoPro footage aiming downwards on your PR7 is that's it's the opposite of what I'd expect. I would've expected the more aggressive bikes to have that body position.
Foot pegs sit higher up on the PR7, so perhaps you do end up bending your back more.
@@jotemenkir Good point. I did mention at the time that I’d have to lower the pegs if I owned one.
Get well soon. Morocco sounds great.
Thanks!
Hi Greg,
Have often enjoyed your TRF articles. This is the first video I’ve seen that you’ve produced, thoroughly enjoyed watching you, you have a really natural demeanour and that made the video really refreshing. Great to find a straight talking host sharing honest thoughts about the illusive unicorn bike too. David (AKA new subscriber)
Thanks David! :-)
Amazing the way you explain it, thanks a lot!
Thanks!
Tested the 701, I had to rev it to much, missed the low grunt. It was also very nervous in the front end. Considering the AJP but it now costs 15.000 euro compared to the 701 that costs 13.000 euro here in Sweden. I think thats pricey compared to what you pay for a T7 for example.
good video.as owner of pr7 2020..love this bike..run good..light bike..it is a fun bike.
It's a great bike!
Constructive criticism: Sometimes it's hard to follow which bike is being talked about.
OK thanks for feedback
Maybe I missed it but price and cost of ownership are serious factors for many potential buyers. I imagine a bike costing considerably more is probably going to at least be better suspended, and that makes a huge difference. It's all very well saying one bike is better than the other but it's hardly a surprise if there's a 20% or more price difference. So, for my money, bike comparisons aimed at the consumer should include the economics.
Fair point, we didn't get round to talking about money.
Your choice of bike all depends on your choice of riding ( simple ) I’m currently looking at a T7 as I want to ride distance to get to off road plus I like to camp 🏕️ so T7 for me 👍
Coming down from a Multistrada.
Cheers
This is purely down to my personal preferences. I find the PR7 provides more smiles for miles on the road than the T7. You may disagree. :-)
Great video👍 I'm looking at selling my sherco 450 sef-r & getting a PR7 & doing adventure riding. Thanks for the video mate. 👌👍

They are all great bikes really aren't they. First world problems :-)
Great video and well balanced reviews Greg. Is that FE450 a 4 stroke?
Yup it's a 4 stroke
AJP for the win!
Bloody brilliant, thanks
Thanks!
Really good assessment. Thanks!
Thank you

Hello Greg good job with the videos by the way! I was wondering if you have ridden other AJP models such as the 300/500? I am thinking about the 300 for single-track enduro competition over 50 Class C. Dealers for these bikes are few and far between here in the States unfortunately.

Stevie - I can't possibly tell you what bike to get, sorry! My PR7 was from AJP but the nearest dealer is MHB Motorcycles in Kirkby Stephen
I've not ridden the SWM, but I've seen it. Whilst they share the same engine my understanding is that they are quite different bikes.

Maybe thats exactly the reason for many to choose the AJP….to get rid of all the extras that can spoil a trip if failing ?
@@scannorse that's why the 3 washer trick on the 690 is great, and just about free

What could you live without on the bike in the effort to save some weight?
What would you like to have been fitted as standard?
Honestly, the PR7 comes pretty well kitted out. I would happily not have the tablet and save a few £ to spend on the nav I do want. The OEM exhaust is prob a little heavy and could be replaced with something lighter. Other than that I really don't know where you could obviously save weight on this bike without sourcing a lighter engine.
