However, Margaret decided not to marry Peter. It was never known if she knew about the plan or not.

This is my absolute favourite scene! Vanessa Kirby's face expression when she hears "But..." I think that she was even better than the real Margaret. She is my favourite Crown actress. :-)
I feel deeply sorry for her as well. I think she would've been very happy with Townsend. Having said that, I also think it's important to note the difference in time between the two issues. The situation with Princess Margaret occurred in the 1950s. It was four decades later that the Charles and Diana situation arose. Everything had changed by then.
I really feel like they do this on purpose!! This also happened in the scene where Tommy tells Peter to leave for the air- attaché roll in Belgium, funny that it’s always in the scenes that concern Margaret and Perer’s connection. I feel like it resembles the way that they became affiliated with one another, seemingly without much thought or consideration for the way it would impact their families and already established connections. It seemed to just be a fully head first plunge into a relationship that didn’t get the mature consideration it really deserved. And that they had of course, especially in the case of the scene where Peter is advised to go to Belgium, ran out of time.

I’m sorry but if I was Margaret in this scene, told by my own sister, a person who is my sister before she was ever Queen that I could marry him but never be a part of the family again, I would have gladly walked away. I would have told her exactly this, “I would rather have him than this system we are born, forced into doing every day, pushing away any feeling. You got to have Phillip with no cost to you but he sacrificed everything to be with you. Now I am going to do the same for Peter. I am going to sacrifice everything to be with him. I wish you well in your reign, Queen Elizabeth. Goodbye.” I would have stood up then bowed, leaving without saying another word to her. Peter was Margaret’s true love to the end of her days. Yes, she found Tony and there was some love between them but eventually that love turned into bitterness, rage and sorrow. It never would have turned that way with Peter. Love this scene. She didn't bent the rules to anyone, times changed, and a lot of issues presented in Margaret's intended marriage weren't present later. In 1955, there were threats of Cabinet ministers resigning for disagreeing with purported marriage, in 1992 when 3 royal marriages broke down or in 2005 with the marriage of Their present Majesties no issue like that aroused. People seem to forget that the world has changed beyond recognition since the 1950s. The Royal Family changed itself, too.

I would have just gave up the title and kept the person I loved and wanted to marry..her popularity being associated as a Royal, QE II sister would have made her some income and noterity in America, especially since she was the party, limelight sister.
Well that's easier said than done. First of all, the main problem wasn't keeping the titles. Under the royal marriages act 1772, it was legally impossible for her to marry without the Queen's consent before she turned 25. Any marriage would've been null and void. There were later some discussions about making an exception if Margaret renounced her claim to the throne, but even that would've been complicated since it would've been a change in the line of succession as well as an exception from the law of the land (as the royal marriages act 1772 had no provisions for what would happen if a royal descendant renounced their claim to the throne) and for both the approval of parliament as well as the parliaments of the other dominions and commonwealth realms was necessary. Margaret couldn't have been certain, that they would get that approval, so she might've renounced her claim and still have been unable to marry Peter. It was way easier to just wait two more years when Margaret was 25 and allowed to marry without royal consent and having to renounce her rights.
It’s interesting that Claire Foy played Anne Boleyn in Wolf Hall. Anne had her own sister Mary Boleyn, disowned and exiled because she married for love and did so without royal consent.
Margaret could have married Peter without the Queen’s consent when she turned 25, but she would have to give up her royal title and income, do she decided not to.
Except it isn’t. Simply the way they treated Harry for daring to leave. Even when Edward abdicated King George still gave him an allowance to live on. Despite him not living in England anymore. The royals expected Harry to live off fresh air. People say why should they still pay for Harry as he’s not a working royal but why did they still pay for Edward all of those years ago? Maybe if they had paid Harry he wouldn’t have done all these interviews slagging his family off. They only have themselves to blame for the way Harry has treated them since.
BUT... Yes, there's that ornery word. "As Queen, I have no choice." There are times when I was really disappointed in the Queen, preferring to upset her sister than to put herself in an awkward position.
Margaret was a very spoilt and pampered woman, when it came down to it she didn't want to give up her title, money and all the perks that went with it. If she had truly loved Peter none of this would have mattered. Everyone felt sorry for her, but she had the choice and chose to stay a royal.
Well… Margaret was given the option to marry Peter , the only catch was she would lose her titles and not receive as many privileges that she usually would as a princess and a lower amount of allowance, Margaret was the one that gave it up as she did not want to lose those benefits
May I suggest that you not accept at face value what is presented in The Crown. Yes Elizabeth did fact promise Margaret that she be permitted to marry Townsend. However around the time Margaret turned 25 the PM, the senior Cabinet ministers and most importantly the Archbishop of Canterbury presented the Queen with their legal and religious advice. I understand that Margaret was advised she could marry Peter but she would have to give up her HRH status and the Civil List salary as she would no longer be performing Royal duties. She apparently did receive some inheritance from her father King George VI. I also think her mother was also against the marriage. Would she have been happier with Peter, probably yes, but we will never know.
Yeah but Margaret put her sister in an absolute terrible position. There were MILLIONS of men to choose from but she chose him and she had to know it would cause serious problems. Be careful who you fall in love with people!
I wouldn't say Karma is the right word here. That implies that Elizabeth had refused to consent to the marriage out of malice, when in reality, she had no choice. Elizabeth was in favour of the marriage, but her government and the church were strictly against it, and she couldn't just ignore that as a constitutional monarch and head of the church.

I agree, considering that Margaret was given everything she needed in life (she never had to worry for food, shelter, or even clothes), it's hard to feel sorry for her just because she couldn't marry who she wanted. So while it is sad, I don't feel sorry for her either.
I wish she would've chose him. Clearly others in the family have left for love and are still together. I think she would've been much better off with whatever funds she had. She was also adored by the public. She could've gone on to do great things instead of the tragic life she lived.
Granted her was probably over money but I know people who left the love of their life because they had to choose between being with him or seeing their family because their family would never except him. Though this person was not getting fame or money out of it.
Excellent scene and a shame Margaret was denied her true love. This denial was one of the biggest mistakes of Queen Elizabeth's reign. It set in motion a series of bad marriage decisions that affect the royal family to this day. After this, the queen never denied marriage, even when she should have. As for Margaret, it would have been a good match. Peter's experience and by all accounts calm demeanor would have tempered Margaret's excitable nature. BUT it was more than just about the line of succession. Margaret would have had to give up her HRH and as a nonworking member of the royal family get cut off from the money. Why do you think Harry did that documentary and book? The security costs alone are ruinous. Margaret tried to find love again, and maybe she did, but neither her marriage or other romances could be sustained. One has to ask oneself, was giving up happiness in love worth the palace lifestyle? I think not.

I think both were a bit jealous of eachother. Margaret was more spunky and lively and promiscuous because she could, it's not fit for a Queen to act that way so Elisabeth smothered that side of her, if she ever had it. Maybe Elisabeth wanted a bit of Margaret's freedom and effortless charm, but for sure Margaret wanted to be Queen and thought of herself as better suited (she wasn't). Like, seriously, can you imagine her as Queen of England? The Institution means something, Monarchy must symbolise tradition, dignity, duty and conformity, and must uphold and protect the values and tenets of Christianity, including those that don't recognise divorce, and the laws (Royal Marriages Act 1772 ). And Peter Townsend was a divorcee. And at that time divorce wasn't as common or acceptable as today to warrant a change of law. BUUUT Margaret inherited money from her dead father (the King) plus "The Civil List Act 1952 provided that she should receive, on her marriage, a further sum of £9,000 a year in addition to the £6,000 a year which she has already. It also makes clear that it had been decided that the wedding would take place in a register office in London" She could also keep the HRH. All that with Peter Townsend. £15 000/year (about $191,960 today) was more than enough for a princess used to luxury. But, surprise, surprise, Margaret wanted a slightly more lavish lifestyle with servants and royal engagements and access to the most beautiful jewels so she let Peter go. How in love could she have been??????? The Crown is making it to be the tragic love story that never was.

I made my comment based on how things seemed historically, and of course we may not have known all the things that went on. Historically, it appeared that he supported Elizabeth and didn't make trouble for her and he liked her as much as she liked him.

Margaret could have married Peter. The real price she had to pay was her place in line to the throne. She was already only third in line and destined to slip back further while Elizabeth was still fertile so the choice was really on her. She said in an interview that she didn't feel committed enough. But in the 50s, the church and society's values dictated that the nuclear family was the only option. Plus, this was still within the lifetime of the abdication. Any more upsets could jeopordise their position. Aand also, with only two very young heirs in front of her, the legitimacy of her consort or her children could not be up for debate. Charles married decades later, when values and even the church has changed, after having to spend ten years in an arranged marriage to a woman completely unsuited to him, and who wasn't exactly faithful either, having been denied the marriage he wanted. He was also technically a widow. There are also loads of legitimate adult and child heirs and Camilla and Charles aren't going to have kids while on the throne.
Honestly, had Margaret given up her royal privileges and walked away from the family to marry Peter, it would have made the Queen and the entire monarchy system look terrible in the public eye. Margaret would have won the favor of the public, and I would expect the Queen would have then found a way to make an exception for her, so as not to appear so cruel.
Margaret and Peter should've just stayed together without getting married. I'm sure after a few years of shacking up with babies out of wedlock would've had Elizabeth, the church, and parliament all but dragging them down the aisle while allowing Margaret to maintain her money/privileges. I would've done that just to spite everybody.
What if Charles forced his mother's hand? Remember, Prince Andrew is in a lot of trouble but he was being protected by his mother being the Queen. And King C never married in the Church of England the second time which is a requirement as king. Parliament has no backbone. They should demand DNA tests for H & M's kids. If they do not share both parents DNA then strip the Harkled all 4 if the kids exist, of their titles.
The restrictions upon them are a reason for their survival. They cannot threaten the state due to such restrictions, but their behavior still cannot help but threaten world opinion regarding the integrity of British institutions. I feel deeply sorry for her as well. I think she would've been very happy with Townsend. Having said that, I also think it's important to note the difference in time between the two issues. The situation with Princess Margaret occurred in the 1950s. It was four decades later that the Charles and Diana situation arose. Everything had changed by then.

I really feel like they do this on purpose!! This also happened in the scene where Tommy tells Peter to leave for the air- attaché roll in Belgium, funny that it’s always in the scenes that concern Margaret and Perer’s connection. I feel like it resembles the way that they became affiliated with one another, seemingly without much thought or consideration for the way it would impact their families and already established connections. It seemed to just be a fully head first plunge into a relationship that didn’t get the mature consideration it really deserved. And that they had of course, especially in the case of the scene where Peter is advised to go to Belgium, ran out of time.
Years later, her son, the adulterer becomes King and head of the church she tried so hard to protect.

I’m sorry but if I was Margaret in this scene, told by my own sister, a person who is my sister before she was ever Queen that I could marry him but never be a part of the family again, I would have gladly walked away. I would have told her exactly this, “I would rather have him than this system we are born, forced into doing every day, pushing away any feeling. You got to have Phillip with no cost to you but he sacrificed everything to be with you. Now I am going to do the same for Peter. I am going to sacrifice everything to be with him. I wish you well in your reign, Queen Elizabeth. Goodbye.” I would have stood up then bowed, leaving without saying another word to her. Peter was Margaret’s true love to the end of her days. Yes, she found Tony and there was some love between them but eventually that love turned into bitterness, rage and sorrow. It never would have turned that way with Peter. Love this scene. She didn't bent the rules to anyone, times changed, and a lot of issues presented in Margaret's intended marriage weren't present later. In 1955, there were threats of Cabinet ministers resigning for disagreeing with purported marriage, in 1992 when 3 royal marriages broke down or in 2005 with the marriage of Their present Majesties no issue like that aroused. People seem to forget that the world has changed beyond recognition since the 1950s. The Royal Family changed itself, too.

Well that's easier said than done. First of all, the main problem wasn't keeping the titles. Under the royal marriages act 1772, it was legally impossible for her to marry without the Queen's consent before she turned 25. Any marriage would've been null and void.
There were later some discussions about making an exception if Margaret renounced her claim to the throne, but even that would've been complicated since it would've been a change in the line of succession as well as an exception from the law of the land (as the royal marriages act 1772 had no provisions for what would happen if a royal descendant renounced their claim to the throne) and for both the approval of parliament as well as the parliaments of the other dominions and commonwealth realms was necessary. Margaret couldn't have been certain, that they would get that approval, so she might've renounced her claim and still have been unable to marry Peter. It was way easier to just wait two more years when Margaret was 25 and allowed to marry without royal consent and having to renounce her rights.

It’s interesting that Claire Foy played Anne Boleyn in Wolf Hall. Anne had her own sister Mary Boleyn, disowned and exiled because she married for love and did so without royal consent.

The royals expected Harry to live off fresh air. People say why should they still pay for Harry as he’s not a working royal but why did they still pay for Edward all of those years ago? There are times when I was really disappointed in the Queen, preferring to upset her sister than to put herself in an awkward position.
Margaret was a very spoilt and pampered woman, when it came down to it she didn't want to give up her title, money and all the perks that went with it. If she had truly loved Peter none of this would have mattered. Everyone felt sorry for her, but she had the choice and chose to stay a royal.

May I suggest that you not accept at face value what is presented in The Crown. Yes Elizabeth did fact promise Margaret that she be permitted to marry Townsend. However around the time Margaret turned 25 the PM, the senior Cabinet ministers and most importantly the Archbishop of Canterbury presented the Queen with their legal and religious advice. I understand that Margaret was advised she could marry Peter but she would have to give up her HRH status and the Civil List salary as she would no longer be performing Royal duties. She apparently did receive some inheritance from her father King George VI. I also think her mother was also against the marriage. Would she have been happier with Peter, probably yes, but we will never know.
Yeah but Margaret put her sister in an absolute terrible position. There were MILLIONS of men to choose from but she chose him and she had to know it would cause serious problems. Be careful who you fall in love with people!

I agree, considering that Margaret was given everything she needed in life (she never had to worry for food, shelter, or even clothes), it's hard to feel sorry for her just because she couldn't marry who she wanted. So while it is sad, I don't feel sorry for her either.

I wish she would've chose him. Clearly others in the family have left for love and are still together. I think she would've been much better off with whatever funds she had. She was also adored by the public. She could've gone on to do great things instead of the tragic life she lived.

Excellent scene and a shame Margaret was denied her true love. This denial was one of the biggest mistakes of Queen Elizabeth's reign. It set in motion a series of bad marriage decisions that affect the royal family to this day. After this, the queen never denied marriage, even when she should have. As for Margaret, it would have been a good match. Peter's experience and by all accounts calm demeanor would have tempered Margaret's excitable nature. BUT it was more than just about the line of succession. Margaret would have had to give up her HRH and as a nonworking member of the royal family get cut off from the money. Why do you think Harry did that documentary and book? The security costs alone are ruinous. Margaret tried to find love again, and maybe she did, but neither her marriage or other romances could be sustained. One has to ask oneself, was giving up happiness in love worth the palace lifestyle? I think not.

I made my comment based on how things seemed historically, and of course we may not have known all the things that went on. Historically, it appeared that he supported Elizabeth and didn't make trouble for her and he liked her as much as she liked him.

Margaret could have married Peter. The real price she had to pay was her place in line to the throne. She was already only third in line and destined to slip back further while Elizabeth was still fertile so the choice was really on her. She said in an interview that she didn't feel committed enough. But in the 50s, the church and society's values dictated that the nuclear family was the only option. Plus, this was still within the lifetime of the abdication. Any more upsets could jeopordise their position. Aand also, with only two very young heirs in front of her, the legitimacy of her consort or her children could not be up for debate.
Charles married decades later, when values and even the church has changed, after having to spend ten years in an arranged marriage to a woman completely unsuited to him, and who wasn't exactly faithful either, having been denied the marriage he wanted. He was also technically a widow. There are also loads of legitimate adult and child heirs and Camilla and Charles aren't going to have kids while on the throne.

Honestly, had Margaret given up her royal privileges and walked away from the family to marry Peter, it would have made the Queen and the entire monarchy system look terrible in the public eye. Margaret would have won the favor of the public, and I would expect the Queen would have then found a way to make an exception for her, so as not to appear so cruel.
