Beautiful piece. I’m no expert, but I’d guess it was a paratrooper bayonet judging by the fuller length, cut down even further to right in front of the fuller and the bayonet ring removed. Probably used to belong to a veteran, who cut it down to be more practical for day-to-day civilian use.

It’s only from the 1960s onward with the introduction of the AR-15 do we see hollowed out handle bayonets. The M1 Garand and the majority of the WWII bayonets (this one being inspired by German interwar bayonet model), were under barrel bayonets.
As impressive as this process is. The truth is that the obvious main part of the knife, the blade, was destroyed in the process. It may be sharp, but it's simply not supposed to look like that at all.

@@malcolmmather4353 no in fact most bayonets were multi use that's why they had a sharpened edge ,it was different in ww1 with mostly trench warfare where a long fixed bayonet mostly a pointy iron spear was practical for when you jumped into the enemy trench and dispatch the guy waiting for you, but in ww2 things were different there were many stealth operations where they would use their knives to dispatch centries by cutting their throats etc, you obviously can't do that type of thing with a knife with no edge,a good example although not a bayonet was the British commando knife which was specifically designed to kill the enemy in silence they even went one step further and gave the the blade two sharp edges so no mistake could be made, it was called the fairbain Sykes fighting knife, and it was deadly, the truth be told how they dispatched the enemy was gruesome to say the least they did not slice the throat as is often portrayed in movies ,the would stab the guy in the neck in front of the spine and push out cutting everything in front of the knife as it existed the throat, like I said gruesome,

Wonderful to see your leatherwork skills, I do a bit of that myself, is that an original pattern Japanese frog or did you come up with the design yourself? Finally, I had to laugh at the end, the blade is about half the original size! Nice and sharp though :) Excellent work! :)

この銃剣は正式名称30年式銃剣といい、戦後平和利用と物資不足のため刀身と鞘、鍔を短く切断して鉈へ改造された物になります。実際の全長は1.5倍以上ありました。刀身付け根の刻印から、名古屋陸軍造兵廠の下請会社豊田自動織機製と分かります。

これ 2式銃剣ではなく 30年式銃剣を切り詰め 銃口に嵌める鍔の部分を切り 法に抵触しない様にした物ですね。
米兵が 戦地で鹵獲して 普段使いのナイフに加工したり 国内でも戦後 作業用に加工した物の修復ですね。

銃剣ってあんなに沢山のパーツで出来ていると知らなかったので驚きました。また設計図もある訳でないのに、構造を考えて直せる事にも驚きましたが、後半の銃剣吊りの製作では、元がないのに！と本当に驚きました。仕上げも手抜き無し！で実に美しいです。革製品の製作とかも面白いかもですね。また楽しみにしています。
今まで木製の部品を作り替えるだけでもすごいと思ってたのに、金属の部品をヤスリで削り出して作って、変態だと思いました（褒め言葉）。

The leather bit is called a frog. They were pretty common way of hanging a bayonet on your belt until about WWII.
