I figured that Zippo was made in the USA. I think a soldier on a Navy ship may have lost it and it ended up on the shores of Japan or somewhere in Asia. Some Zippos are worth a lot of money depending on what they are made from when I was a kid some were made of 18K gold or solid silver. That tells you how old I am. I feel ancient but seeing him restore this Ziplo makes me happy. The younger generations throw away too many good things nowadays because they don't know how to restore things. Many don't have fathers to teach them skills and hobbies. So proud of your work.

It was such a pretty brass color. I wonder why they painted over it with a simple white. Though I do think you should have put something over the metal, like a clear coat or something. Good restore!
They probably chose white powder coating to make it easier to find if you dropped it. Or maybe it was the fashionable color at the time. But a lot of metal made things had powder coating like that with some color to it from what I have seen of old everyday utility items like this. I think it was to protect the metal. But I know almost nothing about this topic so I might be wrong.
I know that the mechanism was damaged beyond repair but that's why I was so excited to see how you'd restore it. Was kinda disappointed when the brand new one came out of the pack.

Miles Compton you saying that, reminded me of when I was in an amusement arcade in Central London, back when I was about 16 many yrs ago and I was playing those silly games where you won tickets and could exchange them for any item from the prize counter, providing you have enough tickets. Well long story short, I’d recently started smoking and I liked zipper lighters, I thought they was so cool and they had some in the arcade, so I bought 1 with my winning tickets and I was so happy 😂. It was black with either a skull 💀 or the grim reaper and I remember always flicking it open and lighting it on my jeans. I thought I was so cool. Anyways, I broke it on my jeans and I was so fucking gutted. I’m laughing now, 20 years later but back then I really was gutted. Like the feeling you’d get if a tornado 🌪 ripped ya house from the ground while at work.

It's not exactly an old zippo. It's only five years old, and the inserts are interchangeable anyway.
The Zippo factory is in my native state of Pennsylvania. Neat to see how things get around the world.
