  • How to Breed a Pet Parakeet. Part of the series: Pet Birds. Breeding pet parakeets only requires putting two parakeets in the same cage, providing a nest box and letting them do the work, but keeping the birds in great health and hand-rearing the young are important factors in bird breeding. Take the time to raise the baby parakeets when breeding birds with information from a pet hobbyist in this free video on pet care. Read more: www.ehow.com/video_4951845_bre...

    You should NEVER EVER use those types of nests for parakeets! The mother will be very uncomfortable while laying and brooding with such little space, not to mention the babies will grow up with crooked tails or abnormal limbs due to the circular and confined space. Budgie babies should have room to walk in the nest box and the gen should be in the same space as the babies, NOT hanging over them. Please never use those nests for your budgies. If you dont believe me, and/or disagree, you have not done enough research to raise baby birds! Sorry for the negative input!! The video was great other than that. My sources are other youtube videos, websites, and plenty of budgie/breeding experience.

      I agree completely, however unfortunate that may be. What concerns me is that people who want to breed birds and take advantage of the internet as an important research are receiving this bad information and most likely embracing it due to the lack of guidance when it comes to such a low-popularity topic. Glad people are upping this to spread the word!!!

    DO NOT USE SUCH NESTS FOR PARAKEETS!!! Those are nests for finches or canaries, for example. Furthermore, let the mom and dad feed their babies, don't hand feed them unless absolutely necessary (visibly weak baby or babies, or the parents not feeding them enough). Taming them comes at a later stage, when they start to leave the nest.
    And a parakeet lays one egg per day, not two every two days. And they hatch the same way, one every day, at around day 21. Most clutches hold 3-4 eggs, but there are exceptions of course.

      Hi! Can you please tell me how to make my parakeets have babies?

  • @patty4425
    @patty4425 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    I’m a breeder. Do NOT listen to this guy’s advice! You need a nest box, with the lid on the top so you can check in on the babies, and remove any dead ones. You need nesting material , preferably shavings to line the bottom of the nest box. About an inch and a half. This is to protect the babies legs from becoming splayed. You need a night light near the cage, in case the babies cry at night. That way, the hen will feed them. You need Petamine Breeder food to put in a separate food dish so the hen will eat, and share with the babies. You need to keep mineral block, and cuttlebone in the cage. This will help the hen form the egg. They lay one egg every 48 hours. Chart it, and give it 18-24 days to hatch.

  • @tooncoppens5969
    @tooncoppens5969 6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    They don't lay eggs in clutches of 2, they lay one every other day. Most of my nests have 6 eggs each.

    Just because you work at a pet store doesn't mean you know what the heck your talking about. Your information is very lacking and miss leading! People if you are wanting to breed your birds, please don't listen to what this guy says or shows you, he clearly doesn't know what he is talking about.

    • @guydreamr
      @guydreamr 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Specifics? Why doesn't he know what he's talking about?

    • @Whatthefudgecookie
      @Whatthefudgecookie ปีที่แล้ว

      @@guydreamr Several reasons, actually.
      1. He showed a finch's nesting box. That is an inadequate box for adult parakeets, let alone chicks. The mother would not have enough space to care for 6 chicks.
      2. Never separate chicks from their mother, for most beginners, this is sentencing the chicks to a very early death as nobody has the time to feed chicks every 5 minutes unless it is literally your job.
      3. He did not mention any dietary specifications for the mother, which can lead to deficiencies and health issues. The mother may be malnourished and the eggs may be unhealthy.
      4. He failed to mention nesting materials. Never use cotton or string, always use wood shavings, unscented pine is the preferred wood. Cedar, walnut, and corncob beddings can irritate or straight-up kill your parakeet. Cedar has a very strong smell that irritates parakeets and they may just throw it out of the nest just to get rid of it. It should also go without saying, but some people are this stupid... Don't use cat litter for birds. The chemicals used in cat litter are toxic to parakeets even in small amounts.
      Most everything he spewed was blatant stupidity guaranteed to get chicks killed or horridly deformed. I know he said nothing about cat litter, I was just adding that on in case someone was like "I wonder if I could do this instead?"
      Hope this helps

    This video is full of bullshit. Please, no one listen to him. He clearly doesn't know anything about breeding parakeets. It's absolutely fine for the babies to be raised by they're parents! They can become tamed very easily if handle from a young age! Also you should NEVER let budgies breed in that nest! Only nestboxes, that nest is suitable for finches and canaries! Research and don't rely on videos!

    “ dont let the parents raise them...” wtf are you crazy. that’s is just upsetting. The parents do a much better job than humans at raising them and your budgies will be a lot healthier if the parents raise them.
    All of my budgies are parent raised and live in an aviary but they are super tame and give me kisses and sit on my finger and shoulder happily. If you take the time taming them are the parents have done there job you’ll have a lot more of success rate!!

    I use to breed parakeets years ago and i don't agree with what he saying. I used a breeding box that was much larger. I created the box myself. Also I feed my birds toast with scalded milk each morning and the parents fed it to the birds. I never fed the babies. Also you need 3 birds in order to breed. The birds need to hear other birds to breed. All my babies were healthy and extremely friendly.

      Just FYI - I have successfully raised parakeets with just the mom and dad, no 3rd keet needed - and if there was a third keet in the same cage the hen would kill it
