One of the first ‘tricks’ I taught my budgie was to fly to my hand (he was more receptive to that than stepping up in the beginning) and that turned into him always wanting to fly back to me when he’s bored or scared or wants to play 😭 it’s so cute
How did you teach your budgie to fly to your hand?
@@kristen6278 by target training first and then targeting onto my hand :) I also always train him in my bathroom (when it’s a new trick) because it’s smaller and much less distracting for him :)

I always tell people who say "little dogs are aggressive and untrainable" that the reason little dogs act so differently is because people don't treat little dogs like they would big dogs - bullying them and picking on them and doing things the dog has signaled that they're not comfortable with. Little dogs who are given the same respect and consideration as a large dog are just as much a dog as any big dog. I love the "treat it like a tiger" analogy, thank you for sharing that!

Your comment made me laugh! We have a female peach faced lovebird that we originally named Sprite and it’s new name is now Jaws. Lol! These little birds are definitely large and in charge - but I love their feistiness!
I've started working more on rehabilitating birds, since watching birdtricks. Every time someone tells me a bird is tame, I take it with a grain of salt, because a bird that is comfortable with a family for months, is a completely different bird when brought into a different environment.
Far too often, people buy or adopt birds that they hear are tamed, but get frustrated when they get the bird home and its no longer the sweet bird they saw with the previous owner, or in the pet store. Then they put the bird away and never work with them, or get their feelings hurt and then resent the bird, so it's usually rehomed, or neglected.
Right from the start, these birds are set up with high expectations that are rarely met, and it's just a recipe for failure. So I whole heartedly agree with the statement that with small birds, you have to look at them like they're dangerous, because they're used to being bullied and manhandled, as is the case nearly 95% of the time. Don't take personal offense if a bird doesn't fall in love with you, within the first 5 minutes of meeting them.
My lovebirds are both rescues, one from a irresponsible breeder, and one from a home where is matter died and had never been socialized. They are 100 percent better but are still hand shy so I try to respect it. I have had them for many years and they have learned tricks and appear to love me and like hanging out with me but I just respect their great of hand as I am not sure what happened before they got to me.

@@quiltedcollies I'm currently working with a lovebird as well, and if it wasn't for the photo evidence from her previous owner, I would assume probably the same. I'm starting to wonder if it's just a love bird thing, in that they don't adjust very well to new people.
I'm so relieved to hear you say it's best to separate their meals.
The internet is flooded with the advice to always keep the food tray full for our little friends, which seems like an utterly unhealthy thing to do even for us humans.
#5 has never really been a problem for me. My tiel associates his travel crate with going to my grandma's which he knows means he's about to get spoiled lol

My grandma's budgie could bite pretty hard, I respected that bird.
We accidentally taught our conures the word noise, and we use it all the time before we are going to make a loud noise, and they have learned to wait for it and brave themselves, even if it's a completely new noise. As for their transport cage, I regularly take them outside in their cages in the summer, and they go very willingly. They also have night cages as well as huge macaw day cages with small bar spacing, so they have been desensitized for cages. I have 1 sun, 2 green cheeks, one of which was a cage bound biting monster, and 1 pearly, who was handled roughly at a pet store and was biting hands/neck compulsively. Thanks so much for your videos, as you've helped us rehabilitate two biting conures, but it's a very long process.

Crate train your other pets as well! You never know if your pet will need to be confined for an injury/illness, travel. It makes it way less stressful for the animal. My dog actually goes into his crate if he’s feeling unwell, it’s his safe place.

I had a budgie when I was a kid and I remember him biting me and it hurt like hell, lol. Strong tiny birds. In his defence I was probably doing something to stress him out as I am learning from you now. So informative. If I ever have another budgie I will definitely be looking to you for guidance
I love the red hair, I think even a lighter red would be really pretty, it's actually why I clicked on the video, although I am a subscriber and do watch you often. You are really good at what you do and I think so many birds and bird owners are better off because of it.
I agree the red hair is beautiful and striking but must confess I like the blond better. Tho you would be stunning in any color I am sure.

Today early in the morning my two budgies flew away . But they were not fully trained. And I don't thing they will come back. For others I have an advice for owners first train them and then set them on a free flight. I am a13 yo boy from India. Thank you for your training video mam. I hope we will buy a New parrot. Thank you for educating us. I just got 2 parakeets about 2 months ago and named them pear and blueberry (nicknamed pear bear & blue bear). They poop sooooooo much! I dont remember my other parakeets being this bad. It makes me want to watch & listen to them more than play with them. We had a traumatic experience already where I left them out of their cage and forgot while company was over. They escaped through a crack under my door and the roommate's 3 large dogs found them before we did. Thankfully they survived but one was bleeding slightly from their beak and the other one was found in the mouth of a dog. Ugh, I got really mad at myself over that and started placing a blanket at the door when I have them out so it wont happen again. We play a game with rolled up paper balls called "uh oh spaghettios." Pear bear drops the balls off the cage and I say it. Last wk, I was holding pear bear, tripped over a vacuum, and almost fell as I was walking to the cage. To my surprise, blue bear said "uh oh" super loud for the first time! Its 4am while I'm watching this & they started chirping with your music at the end of the vid. Gonna put my headphones on so I dont disturb them. I love hearing them sing tho. I've been finding different songs and vids with whistling to play for them. It's been fun listening to see if they copy anything else. Looking forward to many more years with them.👍👍

I have been binge watching your videos for a little while now. I have almost always had some form of animal in the house, including canary and budgies when I was younger. With our birds back then, we didn't have the knowledge we do now about training and allowing the bird to be more than just a pretty item in a cage. THANK YOU from the bottom of my heart and my family for showing us how to care for our recent rescued bird and helping us add joy to her life and ours.

@@Hero101010 she's fantastic! Mischievous for sure. We went and got her a whole bunch of toys and yet she still prefers to chew on cardboard boxes and this old picture frame that we haven't used yet. It annoys my gal's mom, but I think it's cute. She's starting to kinda talk now.

Jamie, I took your advice about building foraging toys and but the simplest but coolest toy for our B&G, Cresper. First I found some nontoxic wood glue and got some wood. I used balsa wood to start so he could get his confidence up then got some 1 inch plank and built a few little boxes with a Walnut and some dried papaya inside and glued it up. It takes him at least 2 days to open these but the contain his favorite jackpot so he is happy to do it. Thank you for all the advice.

I do appreciate small birds videos, but I feel we have seen alot of blue (budgie). I would like to see you interact with a cockatiel. I searched alot of your old videos but couldn't find any cockatiel training, even from customer. I know you don't like cockatoos but a cockatiel is really different from their bigger cousins

When Blueberry is on your hand, do you hold her toes like you do the bigger birds? I feel like I haven't seen it as much. Curious if I should be working on this with my own budgie. I'm sure they are more fragile.
I hold Matcha's "parakeet" Toes when I hold her because she has a problem with rushing up to peoples shoulders. But if she freaks out let go immediately and respect her, and switch hands to try again so she gets used to it, I don't want to traumatize her with my technique . I hold her toes very gently and that usually gives her the cue.
This stuff helps me so much.

First, I love your hair. Second, THANK YOU. I just adopted two budgie boys, while already having a B&G macaw and a SC cockatoo and cockatiel. This is SO helpful, because I've been a bit lost on how to train the littles! They came to me not hand trained, so it's been a bit of a challenge because I'm too used to training the big girls. Your series on the littles has truly been incredible, and my boys are now hand-trained, and we're working on the next steps!

It’s taken sometime for them to adapt to each other, but now after about a couple weeks, they’re all hanging out, & having fun 😊

This is amazin advice! I sadly learned it a little later on, but nonetheless this is advice that can be used further into a small bird's life.
My first finch (Mouschi) came to me with severe behavioural issues and self-mutilation issues due to neglect, loneliness, bad handling etc. Hes 6 years old now, and happily comes to my shoulder and is about as trainable as a young bird could be despite his previous trauma.
Small birds deserve their boundaries to be respected as much as those who can take your finger off.

I got two budgies, and they seem to have a real bond. However, I’m afraid that I may never be able to develop a pet-to-owner bond because of that. What should I do?

It's a great thing for them to have each other. I would say train them individually. Maybe in a different room. But I love the fact that they have a buddy :) Everything will work out!
Thats the problem that I had but for me what I would do is I would place some seeds in my hands when it was time for them to eat. There is always one budgie that is braver so they will eat from your hand. Eventually they will both be eating from your hand. Then you can teach them to perch and pet them😊
Bonded birds can still be tamed, it will just take time because you won’t be able to fall back on the crutch of the bird seeing you as a mate. But a bird should never see you as it’s mate anyway. Just work towards getting them to eat from your hand, then target training and trick and step up training. If possible then train them individually. Just whatever you do, don’t give up on your birds.

This is a great video! I have recently purchased a parrotlet, though she was a baby when I got her it has been difficult to train her to return to her cage after she's been out for sometime. I have had to grab her with a cloth because she bites around trying to stay outside .. I will attempt training to improve her going into her cage easily. Thanks!

I'd suggest making sure her cage is a super fun place to be - full of toys and foraging enrichment. Reserve a favorite treat that she only gets when she returns to her cage, so she'll associate going back inside with positive experiences.

I get two differing instant inner responses watching you tubers or reading articles about birds. I get the , "Ah, crap, I did that wrong" and the inner jiggly, "Oh yeah!, I do that and I did that right, whoop whoop" internal party. No in-between. My soul bird is the cockatiel. I just 'get them so much easier than bigger birds. Maybe its the body language or because they are a little more patient with us, I don't really know but I get a lot of info from them just looking at them that I don't get from bigger birds or even people to be honest.

How can I work through my bird reacting to random things, this can range from a sound she's never heard all the way to a dog running around outside the window. I feel like she just has a total fear of the unknown
