"Overlanding" is a popular term these days, with tons of people wanting to take this activity and make it their own. To get into Overlanding is basically just car camping though, and to get into car camping doesn't cost much money (assuming you already have a car). Is this real "overlanding" - eh maybe not technically, according to the true overlanders, but it'll give you a nice intro into that world. In the end, it's all about getting out of the city and into nature, and enjoying the ride. Don't forget to pick up your trash!

I didn't talk about vehicle specific stuff, or recovery gear in this video. But obviously you'll need a vehicle suited to the type of terrain or trails you want to hit. Regardless of if you're camping or not - you'll also want to tools and recovery gear necessary to keep you going on that trail, and to make it back home. I can make a video more on that side of stuff if you'd like later.

Ways to get into camping- go to Walmart, buy a cheap tent, few cooking items you might need to cook over a fire, pack some clothes, food and go. You don't need several thousand dollar tents and the best of equipment for small weekend trips. Get out and enjoy and quit worrying about it. Upgrade as you go

Sitting watching this in South Africa was fun for me. Camping and Overlanding here is quite different here and it was cool to see how so many of the products you bought are very common here as well. It was also great to see your humble setup, I think we often get so convinced that we need all the bells and whistles that we forget the real reason to have the gear, which is to go camping and enjoy nature. Thanks for hopefully inspiring most people to get out there!

I actually totally dig this video dude, just goes to show you it’s really not all about spending $ to flex on instagram. If the purpose truly is getting fresh air and spending quality time you can do so for modest amounts of $

appreciate what you're doing and seeing so many people talk about first time camping and how this is helpful and takes some of the anxiety away. it's so easy to either get caught up in purchasing the "right" and it's also so easy to figure out your own personal needs after spending some time doing it, but the most important thing is getting out there in the first place.

  • @R0mans13

I took the same tent on a 2 day hunting trip. The first night we had 40-50mph gusts and it literally ripped the tent at all the points that were tight lol the second night was better but the tent didn't allow good air flow (Lots of moisture build up). The temps got down to low 20s the second night (Explains the crazy wind from night before) but thankfully we grabbed more blankets before heading out to another spot because the tent did not offer great wind resistance. The tent lives in infamy amongst my cousins and me because we are all 3 over 200lbs and got cuddly due to the temp lol It was a great experience and the tent served its purpose and had we not had crazy weather I'm sure it would still be in use today. Great video, I'll second your words on getting out there and enjoying our beautiful country, for the amount of use most will give this equipment they are worth the purchase. Rock on brother!

Fun story pertaining to the tent: my buddy and I went to red river gorge to do some overlanding/camping for 4 days, and when we got to the primitive sight we realized the polls for the tent were not inside the bag (my brother had forgotten to put them back in and we slipped checking before we left) so we had to drive an hour and buy that exact tent. We set it up in a torrential downpour and once inside, to our amazement, held out all the rain and had no leaks. We were crazy impressed with its ability to repel water for the price.

Great video to show you don’t need all the high dollar gear to get off the grid and have fun. With a homemade sleeping platform in the back of my ‘05 4Runner I just did a 4 day overland trip in the Mark Twain National Forest of Missouri. I didn’t have to pay for camping (dispersed camping along dead end Fire Roads) I didn’t even bring a cooler. Just bottled water for drinking, coffee, cooking and a 5 gallon jug for personal washing and dishes, and some bottles of orange juice. I brought sealed bags of food stuff that only needs boiling water..... instant potatoes, flavored pasta, rice and stuff. Buy some of the flavored Vienna sausages or canned meats to put in it and it is surprisingly good on a camp trip. Much cheaper than dehydrated meals. I never missed high dollar gear and I didn’t have neighbors three nights in the woods.

This is a great video. As someone who started car camping/overlanding on a budget myself, it's nice to show others it can be done. You don't need $50k to enjoy overlanding. It's unfortunate that there are those that think you do, and will judge you for your setup. What they don't understand is we have just as much fun for far less.

Good info for beginners Mike. Pots, pans and flatware from home for sure. I usually take the older stuff from the kitchen.
Unscented baby wipes are really cheap and you get a bunch, like 72 for a couple bucks. Most are not biodegradable but are great for an all over wipe down on a longer trip.

Recovery gear from harbor freight, camping gear from Walmart with a mix of Amazon stuff really makes my budget weekends fun. I can definitely recommend "Ozark Trail" (Walmart's outdoor private label brand). It may not last forever but I've had a backpack, some chairs and a tent (plus countless other small things) last me atleast 4 years no with no complaints. Hard to justify spending money to upgrade even now. I have their $8 hiking backpack which is more comfortable than a Hurley and a Northface bag I own. I use it as my climbing bag and it's held up to a lot of abuse. I haven't used it but they make full sized internal frame bags as well that I've heard good things about
    Great video by the way!

My buddies and I used to ride bikes with one tent, 3 sleeping bags, some food and lighter and go find a place to camp for night where allowed (usually an old farmer place with pond) when we were teenagers. This reminded me of some good times when I was a kid (albeit a bit rough at times).

My kids use that tent to nap in between sessions at the beach and a Pro tip is buy 10’ x 10’ HD Tarp and you have a ground mat and bullet proof rain fly. Thanks for finally sharing and just getting people to realize we all did not start rolling out with all the gear we have now.

Good to see a video about just getting out. Some people do get too focused on the high dollar gear. You can go camping on a budget. I would recommend stopping by Harbor Freight on your way home from Walmart and pick up a couple of cheap tarps which can be used as a ground cover for your tent. Also, an extra tarp at camp can be handy.

The tent, air mattress and chair are just like the classic festival favourites that people use over here. Glastonbury has at least 200,000 people camping there and at the end there is literally a forest of abandoned tents and chairs just like these.
Happily though, they get recovered, cleaned up and repackaged to be sent out to war torn or impoverished areas. I love those chairs, great for lounging in with a can of beer in the "cup holder" :-)

Really awesome that you also made a list for us to pick and chose for our own personal adventures. I just recently purchased an old 2000 Ford Ranger 3.0 v6 with 144k miles and I plan to take it and my mountain bike out for some day trips to hit some biking trails and I’ve been looking for some affordable cooking sets like you showed to just be able to cook out in nature and have a picnic after my rides! What an amazing video proving you don’t need a lot of money to have a great experience, I really honestly could use this camping gear, I got married a year ago, my wife and I moved to our own apartment and 4 months in she got in a car accident that left her car totaled, she is still out of work and I’ve been struggling to make ends meet month to month, camping and being outdoors is my greatest release as I grew up in Boy Scouts and camping with family; my family goes on a yearly camping trip and it’s coming up soon and it’s looking like my wife and I won’t be able to join. If it’s not too late and you still have the gear I would really appreciate it. At the very least you made my night by giving me some hope that here soon I’ll be able to save some money and get out for at least one weekend before the summer is over. Thank you!

One more item I would have added to your cart: Coghlan's Seam Seal. It looks like Walmart sells it for about $4.50. About 15 years ago I picked up one of those cheapo Walmart tents for a solo wilderness kayak trip and it absolutely DUMPED buckets of rain on my first night. The tent had a rain fly which worked well enough, unfortunately, none of the actual tent seams appeared to be taped, so I just had water leaking in from everywhere - top to bottom - all night long. I suspect I would have been fine if I had thought to check (and then seal) the seams before heading out.

Good video for people wanting to start. People would be amazed at what can be done when not competing with “”the Jones’s “” Far more memorable times taking the family into the wilderness than some one day trip to an amusement park.

Totally agree. Be and my Buddy go overlanding but it is also only on the weekends. We both have trucks and camp out of them. There is always plenty to explore including abandoned mines, trails never used and structures used in the gold rush times here in Northern California.

Very cool video. I'm getting ready to do some light car camping in my 4Runner soon and it's nice to know there are cheap and usable options for gear. Also, great message at the end there. Leave the place cleaner than you found it and don't go off trail. That's how we keep access to all these cool places.

Hi!!! I am a camping and Overlanding enthusiast and based out of India. Nice video, principles of camping remain the same world over. Unfortunately, we don’t get good quality gear in India and the demand for camping is almost negligible. There are a few a few difference in camping in India - happy to discuss or chat on WhatsApp.

Great video and tips. Good to know you care about those that can't afford all the big ticket gear items as well. You can buy a cheap battery op pump for the air bed. That's what I use and it's lasted me many trips. I'm glad you mentioned bagging out your trash. Thank you for the video.

Now walmart has store brand cig plug tire inflators, the "floater" attachment with a few wraps of duct tape fits in the mattress fill plug. And in five minutes its filled. The inflator is dual purpose and its $15 bucks. Which if youre in to this budget type stuff it's good to have the ability to air your flat spare you havnt touched in years. Cuz with my luck the only time id need it is 50 miles from pavement in the mountains.

Something that you may need to mention is there is a store “play it again sports” that buy and sell stuff like camping equipment. So you can buy a nice slightly used tent or chairs or grill or trade up your stuff.

Only thing I would add is to have an air mattress cover of some kind so you will stay warmer. Have slept on air mattresses and if it's cold the air in the mattress is cold and YOU are cold

  • @applegateoutdoorsadventures

Definitely didnt like the 50 degree sleeping bag and it was even summer when I tried it . The ozark trails tent is pretty good for the money. I got about ten years out of the last one I bought until I eventually broke one of the poles. Those chairs never last me more than one season but I am probably too heavy for it. Now I use one of the coleman foldable director type chairs with the side table. I really like that and it holds my 250 lbs much better. I like the air mattress because it is more comfortable than my bed at home but never last very long before they develop a rip on the seam. I enjoyed the video. Thanks for sharing.

Those plastic utensils you picked up melt very easily. Ask me how I know. Walmart has a folding "hobo" knife for around $5. Made of metal, has a fork, spoon and knife and possibly other tools. Mine has a bottle/can opener and cork screw. Some of them split so you can use the fork and knife/ spoon separately.

Just found one of those single burner butane Coleman stoves you chose in your video yesterday at our local Goodwill for $7.99. Looks like it was only used once at most, and still had the butane can with fuel in it. Left it there for the next guy to score, as I've already yarded out a half dozen other Coleman stoves, both LP and white gas from there and certainly don't need another stove in my garage.

Just saying, the mess kit isn’t designed for cooking. It’s plated aluminum from what i gathered. That’s how it was when I bought it a few years back. Honestly you should’ve hit a surplus store too, i’d like to see you just pick camping gear from there (not necessarily on a budget, just more of a how to pick your stuff)

Those storage containers look so tactical and durable. Where did you purchase those from? Every once a year on Easter I take my family camping. The first time was a learning experience. I thought I had everything necessary, but we spent the worst time of our lives freezing ourselves at night. I upgraded so many things, and it’s a big difference. Great video, I enjoy learning from you.

Oh, and DEFINITELY more weekenderlander videos! Those are some amazing videos! If you could do a weekenderlander video every weekend that would be awesome! I know that’s hard but I’m craving more! A dimmer red light is actually better than one with more lumens. Even if it is red, it can hinder your night vision if too bright. In this case, the cheap lantern is probably a better option....if you are concerned about night vision retention, that is.

    • @LastLineOfDefense
      @LastLineOfDefense  5 ปีที่แล้ว

Yeah, I get that - but this was dim to the point of not really being usable as a 'lantern' it could illuminate things only a few inches away. Still yeah a good option if you're looking for maximum night vision retention. I think red lights work better in general when they are brighter, and headlamps - that way they are just projecting the light at what you are looking at, rather than into your eyes.

First, if you don't drink coffee do you have other interests for caffeine intake or is it not something you're into?
I'd love to see a budget gear vs quality gear comparison; this is why this is better, this is why that is worse, etc. To set goals for something to start out on and progress towards as far as gear goes

This is the perfect newbie information. I will be hitting mostly the road and will be boon docking to the southwest in winter in my 18 year old Trailblazer I've owned all those years. I started watching your channel that are more hardcore to get better advice. I plan to add a teardrop trailer to my outfit once I've put put away enough. Right now Ive purchased a one time used Cabella SUV Tent for a third the cost. I like this option, it will allow me to keep the tent up, and close my hatch to sleep in my vehicle in case there's any threat ouside or if conditions are not favorable. I keep watching all the recommendations and writing them down. I plan to add a cargo holder with bike carrier. Can you or anyone recommend any 5 gal water containers that could take being stored on the hitch cargo carrier. Thanks

Something a lot of people don't understand is the difference between the purpose of quality items and affordable items. We woild all loke to biy something that lasts forever but that stuff can be very expensive... especially if you need to buy it all at once. If you have to biy a bunch of things all at once you can get discouraged by all the people saying "buy once, cry once" or you can buy all the items you need at affordable prices and then replace them with quality items as they inevitably wear out over time. It's not like everything you buy in the beginning is going to fail on your first trip. Maybe we should be saying "buy twice, cry never"
